It’s a rare kind of goaltender that merits first round attention, and Boston University’s Jake Oettinger appears to fit the bill. Standing at an imposing 6’4”, he came in as a freshman and earned the starting position at one of the top college hockey programs. In 35 starts this past season, Oettinger compiled a 2.11 GAA and a .927 save percentage.
Would he be a fit for Columbus? Absolutely. There’s no need for immediate goalie help so the Jackets can afford to let a goalie prospect develop in the college ranks. They’re already doing that with last year’s sixth round pick, Peter Thome. A skater at #24 could contribute more immediately, but a pick like Oettinger could pay off more in the long term if he continues to play well.

Oettinger’s numbers show a goaltender who has been effective among his peers as per Elite Prospects. In 2014-15 with the USNTDP, he posted a 91.6% overall save percentage in 27 games. In 2015-16, he wasn’t as effective with a 90.8% overall save percentage but he did play more games, 37 games. Internationally in those two seasons, he was very good in the short tournaments, posting a 93.7% save percentage in both. In his freshman year at Boston University, he was one of the best goalies in college. In 35 appearances, Oettinger posted a 92.7% overall save percentage - the ninth highest save percentage in the nation according to USCHO and the third highest save percentage in his conference, Hockey East, also according to USCHO. Such a performance led to Oettinger to being named to the All-Rookie team and the second All-Star team by Hockey East at the end of this past season. Oettinger’s performances also helped Boston University to the second best record in Hockey East, reach the semifinals of their conference’s tournament, and take BU to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Frozen Four. All together, Oettinger had a very good 2016-17 campaign. - All About the Jersey
“His technique is already pretty good and he's just so big and athletic and quick, and he's got good instincts for the position,” says Kirk Luedeke, a scout with Red Line Report. “I think he's the total package, I think he's a first round pick—I don't think he gets out of the first round, I'm not sure where he goes, probably later on, but any team that's looking for a goaltender is probably going to take that plunge, especially late in the first where you can afford to take that chance because I think he's going to be a nice payoff for whoever drafts him.” - Sports Illustrated
