Tage Thompson is the son of former Los Angeles Kings player Brent Thompson, who now coaches in the AHL at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Suffice to say, Thompson has been around hockey all of his life. Long and lanky, Thompson started on the fourth line at UConn, but was quickly movied to the first. He finished with 14-18-32 for the Huskies, including leading the NCAA with 13 power play tallies. Despite having a great shot, he has yet to translate that to even strength, where a criticism is that he takes too much time on the puck.
HOW DOES HE FIT IN COLUMBUS?
Well, any power play help would be wonderful, consider how woeful Columbus’ has been for pretty much always. Thompson would likely need a few years to develop physically as well as develop his gameplay in Cleveland. He could very well earn a late season call up, but he would not be starting on an NHL roster anytime soon. At a wiry 185 pounds, he has room to grow into his 6’5" frame. He could project as a 20 goal contributor in a few years, as Columbus may be starting to contend for conference semifinalist positions.
