2016 NHL Draft Prospect Profile: Luke Kunin

Luke Kunin

Position: Center

Current team: Wisconsin Badgers

Date of birth: December 4, 1997

Place of birth: Chesterfield, MO, USA

Height: 6’0″

Weight: 196 lbs

Shoots: Right

Luke Kunin, who just completed his freshman season with the Wisconsin Badgers, is known for being a very intelligent player with a very accurate shot. Kunin is praised by his coach, Mike Eaves, as being patient, taking responsibility, and having toughness. Criticisms of Kunin include his lack of strength on his shot as well as staying with a play. He does seem determined to get better and improve his game, particularly in the defensive zone, and has a willingness to work to improve to become a 200 foot player.

HOW DOES HE FIT IN COLUMBUS?

Well, considering the lack of centers in Columbus and in the pipeline, I would not complain about adding Kunin at all. Given that it would be several seasons before he would be ready for regular NHL duty however, I would not (obviously) take him third overall. If he is there in the second round when Columbus picks (34th overall), I would certainly not object to taking a flyer on him. Columbus is thin down the middle (and may get thinner depending on how expansion protection works out and if the team loses Wennberg), so stocking up on centers would be nice to see.
