Boris Katchouk was a bright spot on an otherwise pretty average Soo Greyhounds this year, and exploded in the postseason, leading them through two rounds before being shut down by Erie. Scoring at almost a point per game pace in his first full season in Major Junior, he’s drawn a great deal of praise for his “simple and steady” game, but many scouts are afraid that he doesn’t quite have what it would take to mature into a strong NHL player.

What he has shown against his OHL opposition is a strong two way game that earned him the nickname “Boriscuda” from fans in the Soo, and has praise for his physical play and good skating. Still, his offense has appeared to come in streaks and spurts, and it remains to be seen if he could provide the kind of complete package that NHL teams will be looking for in a late first / early second round draft pick.

Still, he’s got good defensive instincts, and he’s aware of his size and isn’t afraid to use it, which will likely grab the attention of many teams looking for someone who can make an impact with his body as well as his shot.

A Good Fit In Columbus?

Honestly, I don’t think so.

I like what I saw of Boris’ offensive abilities when watching his highlight reels, but the concerns about consistent offensive talent and the fear of a relatively low ceiling make me think he’s not what the Jackets are looking for. I’m sure that Jarmo, JD, and Torts would like to add some good size to the forward prospects, but this team has plenty of grinders in the lineup and prospect pipeline. Something more dynamic is needed from this year’s draft class.

Love the nickname, though. Gotta admit that would look fun on a shirt from the Blue Line.
