Boone Jenner had a down year offensively. He stumbled mightily out of the gate, registering just one point in the month of October (an assist in a win against the Dallas Stars), Jenner struggled to find his game the rest of the way, never registering more than 7 points in any month of the season. For a former 30 goal scorer, last season was an offensive failure.
Tortorella moved Jenner all around the lineup, even playing him at center late in the season, in an attempt to get his offensive game going, but it never materialized. Jenner had just one multi-goal game all year, a March victory over the New Jersey Devils. He averaged 1:12 seconds of power play time per contest this season, registering just one lonely point.
One contributing factor to his struggles may have been his career low shooting percentage this season. Jenner, a career 12.23% shooter entering last season, shot a paltry 8.5% last season. That decline definitely affected Jenner’s offensive production. A return to form shooting the puck should help Jenner regain his mojo on that side of the ice.
To make up for his offensive deficiencies, Jenner worked on developing the other part of his game: he played solid defensive hockey for 82 games.
Jenner registered 216 hits this year, the most he has ever thrown in his four year career. He blocked 80 shots this season, the most he has ever blocked. Jenner registered 42 takeaways this season, the most he has ever registered. Simply put, Jenner was a pest to play against this season.
Boone Jenner had a tough season last year, most will agree on that. But he worked hard to contribute in other ways, through defensive prowess and leadership on and off of the ice. Jenner is still a young player just beginning to enter the prime of his career. He may never put up points like Cam Atkinson, but he can still make plays at both ends of the ice.
Highlights
In fairness to Boone, he may not have scored many goals, but he certainly may have scored the single best goal any Blue Jacket scored all season. Just marvel at this for a minute.
