2015 NHL Trade Deadline: Wisniewski Traded to Ducks for Bourque, Karlsson, & 2nd Rounder

When the 3:00pm deadline passed, a lot of people thought the Jackets might have kept James Wisniewski on their blue line, but it seems they did have a deal in place that was waiting to be registered by the NHL.

Columbus has dealt Wisniewski and their third round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for Rene Bourque, William Karlsson, and a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft.

The move feels like a bit of a let down after seeing some of the deals flying around – if nothing else, I’d have liked to see a first round pick in that deal, but the front office apparently felt this needed to happen.

Bourque has been a decent NHL player at times, particularly with the Flames, where he had three 40+ point seasons from 2009-2011, but he struggled after being traded to Montreal in the 2011-2012 season, and failed to make any impact at all in Anaheim, scoring just 2 goals and six assists in 30 games this year.

Karlsson may be the saving grace here – a 2nd round pick of the Ducks in 2011, he put up some pretty solid numbers in the SEL before making his debut in the AHL this season, where he has 21 points in 34 games, and 2 goals and an assist in 18 games with the big club. He’s regarded as a “speedy” playmaker by Elite Prospects – perhaps the organization sees him shoring up their center depth.

We’ll see if there are any further deals waiting to be processed – if that is it for today, it’s sad to see a fan favorite go, particularly one with Wiz’s enthusiasm for the city and the team.
