Goalies are so hard to project to the NHL level, especially in this year’s draft class with no clear-cut talent at the top of the boards. One prospect who has the physical traits and has caught the eyes of some scouts is Samuel Montembeault out of the QMJHL. He is now 6’3” in height and utilizes a butterfly style in net. Montembeault stays calm under duress, thought his save percentage was not outstanding the last couple years in junior. Like nearly all goaltenders, he will definitely be a multi-year project before he is ready to jump to the NHL.

Scouting Reports

Buddlng goalie prospect with good athleticism, and flexibility. Shows good unflappable style when the crease area is full of traffic. Gets good push going side to side, and set ups up well for the second and third shots. – Bill Placzek, Draftsite.com

Montembeault has the height (6’3″) that many NHL teams now value in a goaltender, and he makes good use of his butterfly style of goaltending in being able to cover both the lower portion of the net while also having the vertical size to cover a good portion of the upper half of the net. – Hockey’s Future

A Good Fit in Columbus?

Goalie isn’t a position of need for the Blue Jackets. Even with questions about Oscar Dansk’s future, the Jackets have selected several goalies in recent drafts, so they have plenty of young prospects in the pipeline. If you look at mock drafts there is no consensus on Montembeault – some have him jumping up late in the 2nd round or early in the 3rd, while others predict him going into the 5th round. It just makes more sense for the Blue Jackets to add blue line and forward prospects in those first few rounds.
