2015 NHL Draft Prospect Profile #12 – Timo Meier

Timo Meier

Position: Right Wing
Current Team: Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL
Date of Birth: January 2, 1997
Place of Birth: St. Gallen, Switzerland
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 209 lbs
Shoots: Left

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Meier first-hand the past two seasons, and though his rookie year in the “Q” was less than impressive, this season he’s been very good. Meier plays a rugged style, never afraid to muck it up. He wins board battles more often than not, and has an NHL-caliber shot. He’s not a great skater, so he relies on physicality and positioning to earn scoring chances. Near the net he’s lethal thanks to his shot, but is also a terrific passer. He’s the kind of player that can play anywhere in the lineup.

Scouting Reports

A physically dominant winger with the ability to play in a skill or character role. In the offensive end, Meier is very aware and gets himself into spaces where he can easily make seeing eye passes or snap hard, accurate shots. Can impact the game in a number of different ways, and is very consistent in his efforts. All-in-all, the kind of versatile player that you can put on a skill line, and trust to create dangerous chances, or on a shutdown line, and trust to help stop pucks from going into your net. – Elite Prospects

Meier had a pretty slow start to his North American career last season with the Halifax Mooseheads and didn’t make a huge impact. He has been revelation this season and has shot up the draft rankings while piling up the points. He had strong showings at both the World Juniors and Top Prospects Game which has furthered his cause. The fact that he plays almost every shift with a high level of intensity and aggressiveness is a huge bonus. There is some question as to whether his point totals this season are strictly because of playing with Ehlers, but he’s had some big names without his line mate throughout the season.Tier II – His play this season has made him a sure-fire first round pick and he has every opportunity to go between the 10th and 20th selection. He’s a safe pick in terms of having a lot of pro qualities that make him an almost certain NHL player. – Hockey Prospectus

A Good Fit in Columbus?

I’m on the record saying the Jackets should go with defense in the first round, but if they desire a forward I can’t think of one more suited to the Jackets’ style of play than Meier. He does whatever it takes to help his team win, whether it’s scoring a big goal or playing a checking style. In the NHL I can see him play a middle-six role with powerplay time. If he can work on his skating he can potentially hang on a top line.
