2015 NHL Draft Prospect #55 – Nicolas Roy

Nicolas Roy

Position: C
Current Team: Chicoutimi Sagueneens, QMJHL
Date of Birth: February 5, 1997
Place of Birth: Amos, Quebec
Height: 6’4″”
Weight: 198 lbs
Catches: Right

He was the first overall pick in the 2013 QMJHL Draft, drafted by Cape Breton, where he refused to report and was subsequently traded to Chicoutimi. With the Sags, he’s put up some good, but not great offensive numbers but has developed into a dependable two-way forward, reminding me a lot of Artem Anisimov.

He seems like he’s destined for the second round of the draft, and as a pro he’ll likely end up a plus 3C, moonlighting on a scoring line when necessary. I believe there is still more to come from him, however, and if he can continue to refine his game he may turn into more of a power 2C.

He’s one of the more intriguing prospects available this year.

Scouting Reports

An aggressive power center who has the ability to dominate on the forecheck. The first thing you will notice about Nicolas Roy is that he is a full-framed figure who powers through his strides and finishes his checks. Subsequently, you will notice his nose for the net; he cannot be knocked off stride easily and has a good set of hands around the net. All-in-all, a big-bodied, imposing presence on the ice who threatens the opposition with his deadly medley of size and skill. – Elite Prospects

There is no doubt in our mind that his biggest quality is his anticipation and his vision. He’s always in the right place and he does many things that only well-rounded forwards can do. He blocks shots on a regular basis and he supports his defensemen well down in his zone. Most of the time, he will be the one able to get the puck out of his zone on his line. One of the things we likes about Roy is that he shows excellent offensive instincts and is adept at picking off passes through the neutral zone creating quick counter attacks and odd-man rushes. – Hockeyprospect.com

A Good Fit in Columbus?

If the Jackets maintain multiple picks in the second round, I’d be excited if they used on on Roy. He’s got size, skill, defensive awareness- he just needs seasoning. He would add even more depth up the middle within the organization.
