Aaron Portzline reports Steve Mason has confirmed he's been traded.
Mason, a former 3rd round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, came fast onto the scene in his rookie year. He won the Calder Trophy as the best rookie in the league and was a leading force behind the Blue Jackets first and only playoff run.
Since then, the bottom fell out of the Blue Jackets. Last year, the team was 30th in the league and Mason has just not been able to reclaim his rookie form.
Even as the team has improved this year, and with Sergei Bobrovsky having a Vezina-worthy season, Mason just couldn't find the same success when in goal. Even in wins, he's let in soft goals and never looked 100% confident.
He could be a player that truly benefits from a change of scenery. In Columbus, the first goal allowed was often followed by, "Here we go again..." He'll at least get a few games in Philly before they start jumping down his throat.
Update: The official trade is Steve Mason to the Flyers for goalie Michael Leighton and a 3rd round pick.
