Dauphin is a fantastic skater, and uses that trait to get himself into scoring areas. His talent with the puck leads to offense once he arrives in said areas, but until he bulks up he remains a slight player with a ton of potential.

I first took notice of him at the Top Prospects Game. He was a last-minute addition when Hunter Shinkaruk had to back out due to the flu. In an earlier profile on Ryan Hartman, I mentioned the huge hit that Hartman layed on Dauphin 20 seconds into the game. What I didn’t mention was that after getting trucked, Dauphin went on to have a fantastic game, finishing with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory for Team Orr over Team Cherry. He was named player of the game for Team Orr.

Fucale is a cool and calm, poised goalie that is incredibly athletic. He shows high-end reflexes and is never out in a play. He has elite level mobility and incredible quickness within the crease. He shows very impressive footwork and can get to almost any puck. He possesses an impressive glove hand that is flashy and able to rob some of the QMJHL’s heaviest shooters. He also possesses a good blocker hand and strong control with its rebounds. He plays with great positioning and is always square to shooters. He’s aggressive and enjoys challenging shooters. Fucale is competitive and focused goalie that has an incredible compete level and shows great determination. – See more at: http://futureconsiderations.ca/playerprofiler/Zachary-Fucale/#sthash.QPKIN7da.dpuf

Scouting Reports:

Dauphin had a good rookie season for Chicoutimi, displaying a high amount of upside. He is a skilled player with the puck, with the kind of soft touch and control that a top forward prospect needs. He has shiftiness in his game, as he is able to make quick movements with his feet and hands. He couples strong acceleration with a good top gear. He is quality passer who makes nice saucer distributions, and he can make plays with limited time and space. Dauphin’s main area of improvement will have to come from his strength level. He can easily be pushed off of picks, and he has an undeveloped frame. Despite that, he has a good on-ice work ethic, and he battles and backchecks well. His physicality should progress with time.
Hockey Prospectus

Dauphin is a smart player who combines heady play with a decent skill set. He generates good speed in his skating and is shifty off the rush. He handles the puck well and displays tricky-quick hands. He’s creative both in his stickhandling and distribution and is alert in all three zones. – See more at: http://futureconsiderations.ca/playerprofiler/Laurent-Dauphin/#sthash.UmltmRv1.dpuf

Future Considerations

Why he’d be a good fit in Columbus:

In simple terms, the Jackets need offense, and he provides it. Dauphin is a teammate of Columbus prospect Lukas Sedlak, who has already signed his pro deal with the Jackets. When checking in on Sedlak, the Columbus brass would have had opportunities to see Dauphin up close. If they came away impressed, don’t be surprised to see his name called when it’s Columbus’ pick.
