2011 NHL Draft Prospect Profile #33: Nicklas Jensen

Place of Birth: Herning, Denmark

Puempel is a winger for the OHL’s Oshawa Generals, and is considered by many to be one of the best prospects to ever come out of Denmark. He’s an offensive winger who can play either side, his best asset being his wrister. He is a likely late first-rounder or early second-rounder. He doesn’t respond well to contact, but if he gains the willingness to fight more for loose pucks he will turn out to be a dependable second-line winger. He reminds me a bit of Tampa’s Sean Bergenheim. Bergenheim took a few seasons to assert himself, and I can see Jensen taking a similar path.

Scouting Report (NHL):

“Nicklas has adjusted very well to the OHL. His puck-handling and play-making ability are excellent. He has an excellent wrist shot that he gets off quickly.”

Why he’d be a good fit in Columbus:

Jensen is a prime candidate to be available when the Jackets pick early in the second round. He would join Tomas Kubalik, Maksim Mayorov and Petr Straka as potential future second-line wingers in the organization. He isn’t focused enough defensively to be used other than on a scoring line, but doesn’t posses the talent to be a first-liner. From a Columbus perspective he would add depth to the system, but I could see the Jackets focusing on a blueliner or center with their second pick.
