2011 Draft Prospect Profile #4: Dougie Hamilton

Position: Defense
Age: 18
Date of Birth: June 17, 1993
Place of Birth: Toronto, ON
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 193
Shoots: Right

It’s all in the genes. Hamilton’s parents are both Canadian Olympic athletes. Dad, Doug was a bronze medalist on the 1984 rowing team. Mom, Lynn was on the 1984 basketball team. Brother Freddie, was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of last year’s Entry Draft (129th overall). Not bad lineage for soon to be 18 year old Dougie. Dougie recently led his Niagara IceDogs into the third round of the OHL playoffs, where they fell to Mississauga four games to one. Dougie led his club in playoff scoring, registering 4 goals and 12 assists for 16 points in 14 games. He finished the postseason at a robust +7. Dougie and teammate Ryan Strome have been invited to the NHL Scouting Combine, to be held in Toronto from May 30th through June 4th.

Scouting Report (NHL.com):

“He moves the puck well and makes good outlet passes, he does make good decisions with the puck, moves it very well out of his zone. He’s a big guy, he’ll take the body. … He uses his size well. He can muscle people off the puck.”

Why he’d be a good fit in Columbus:

Projected to be drafted somewhere between 4th and 8th, Hamilton may not be destined to be a Blue Jacket. However, given his current size, his willingness to take the body as well as show superior offense, this would be a genuine blue chipper in the making if he were to be available for the Jackets’ first round selection. Visualize the tall, confident Hamilton behind his net, looking up ice for RyJo and sending him in on yet another scoring rush!
