2010 Prospect Development Camp Final Roster

Previously on the 11th of June we posted a preliminary roster for the Prospect Development Camp that starts on Wednesday. The final roster and schedule was released today, here is the final roster:

Here are my comments on the invites that were originally reported:

RW Nick Sucharski: Former CBJ draft pick Sucharski completed his fifth year at Michigan State this past spring. I have to be honest, I don’t know the details behind an NCAA player spending five years at school. I was under the impression that a prospect’s rights were owned by the team that drafted him until the end of his fourth year at school, unless he’s signed first. Perhaps it’s four years after the player has been drafted, which is the situation with Sucharski. At any rate he is a fringe player looking for a shot in the pros. He has never scored more than nine goals with the Spartans, and will be a long shot to earn a contract with Columbus.

D Kyle Page: An undrafted free agent who also recently completed his college career. Page suited up for Bowling Green and had a tryout with the Toledo Walleye at the end of last season. He’s an undersized guy (5-10, 185) who has offensive talent. Given the depth earmarked for the Springfield blueline, Page is in-tough to earn a contract. At the end of the day though, these guys could surprise- that’s why they are invited to these camps in the first place.

G Chris Rawlings: Rawlings is an interesting story. He just completed his freshman year at Northeastern, after making the jump from Junior A. He had a rough start to his career but finished the season on a strong note. He’s a monster as well- checking in at 6-5, 210. There is raw talent there, and with some coaching he could be a solid positional goalie in the pros. He’s 22, so he’s likely ready for a move to the pros.

In addition to those players, there are a few others that have since been offered an invite, here’s a bit of info on them:

F Scott Fleming: Fleming just completed his third year at Dartmouth, here’s a blurb from the Dartmouth Athletics site:

“Assistant captain for the season … Finished the year as the team’s leading scorer with a career-high 39 points … Named honorable mention All-Ivy … Given the team’s leading scorer award as well as the MVP award … Finished 10th in the Ivy League in overall scoring and was ninth in goal scoring … In ECAC Hockey games he finished 13th in overall scoring and fourth in goal scoring … Led the team in with 10 power play goals”

F Chris Francis: The Jackets must have loved scouting the Portland Winterhawks, after drafting Ryan Johansen with the 4th overall pick this past weekend they invite the leading scorer of the ‘Hawks Chris Francis. His junior career came to a close at the end of the season and he has signed a pro contract with Springfield. He’s an undersized guy at 5-9, 189 but he has obvious offensive ability. Most overagers (as Francis was last season) tend to have inflated numbers but he could be the next Geoff Platt. Check out this article from Oregon Live, it gives a glimpse into Francis the person.

LW Oliver Gabriel: Another Winterhawk getting an invite, Gabriel had a shortened season due to a torn spleen. He seems like a grinding type strictly going by stats alone, otherwise I don’t know much about this kid. While scouting Johansen the brass must have seen something they like in Gabriel, I’m eager to see how he does at prospect camp.

RW Michael Kantor: Kantor is an interesting story. He is generally an enforcer type, a physical player who does more withi his fists than his stick. Here is some background on him, from mlive.com.

RW Tyler Murovich: Murovich is already signed by the Springfield Falcons to an AHL-only contract. If he can impress here and earn a spot in main camp, he may upgrade to an NHL/AHL deal. He’s an offensive forward who spent last season with Saginaw of the OHL, and was signed to a PTO by the Syracuse Crunch. Another article from mlive.com gives some insight into this player.

All of the 2010 draft picks with the exception of Austin Madaisky are taking part in the camp. The defense is full of firepower, it will be a great opportunity to see them all together.

The forwards were a weak group before the addition of Johansen. He and last year’s first rounder John Moore are the stars of this camp. Here is the schedule:
