Curtis McElhinney turned in a 31 save performance on Sunday afternoon in Springfield as the Falcons blanked the Adirondack Phantoms 4-0. The game also featured the first AHL goal by Ryan Johansen as the Birds picked right up where they left off on Saturday night.

Ryan Johansen notched what would be the game winner nearly 16 minutes into the first period, converting after some sweet stickhandling through the slot and cleanly beating Cal Heeter for the 1-0 lead. Picking up RyJo were JAM and Cam.

The Falcons are now 2 for 2 on first minute of the second period goals. Today, Dalton Prout captured his first of the season when he lobbed one toward the cage. Through a maze of bodies, a redirect and it was in, giving the Birds a 2-0 advantage. Assists went to Ryan Craig and Cody Bass at the 30 second mark.

Five minutes later it was time to spread some JAM on the Phantoms when Jonathan Audy-Marchessault picked up his first regular season marker for the Falcons. JAM had five goals in Springfield's last two preseason contests, and he now has three points in the first two games of the regular season. The goal was a beauty one timer from the top of the left face off circle that Heeter had no chance on. It came on the power play and was set up by Cam Atkinson and David Savard.

Captain Ryan Craig closed out the scoring with his second goal in two games at 7:17 of the second period. Craig buried a Cody Bass feed into the wide open net to extend the Falcons lead to 4-0.

C-Mac was unbeatable in goal throughout, but especially so in the third period, when the Phantoms outshot Springfield 12-6. For the game, Adirondack outshot Springfield 31-20.

Today's Three Stars:
1. Curtis McElhinney
2. Ryan Craig
3. JAM

All were well deserved, and similar to Saturday night, the attack was well balanced with everybody working at both ends of the ice. You'll hear "north-south" and "compete" a lot from these guys, but for the first two games of the season, Brad Larsen has them doing just that - working at both ends of the rink and not taking a step back to anybody.

There were two fights today, first one involved Cody Bass (who demolished Marc-Andre Bourdon) and in a bit of a surprise, Michael Chaput dropped the mitts with Adirondack captain, Ben Holmstrom. The play was chippy at times, but the Falcons played smart, physical hockey (for the most part).

The Falcons return to The Nest next Friday night when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins come to town for a 7PM tilt.
