Falcons take concussions seriously

I've wanted to make a post this season about the dramatic increase in the number of concussions and resulting suspensions. This is such a complex topic, that I simply don't have the time to research it in a way that would do it justice. Today, the Falcons beat reporter, Garry Brown, published a story that looks not just at the impact of concussions, but more specifically the effect that it's had on the Falcons.

Hey there, Columbus. Your friendly neighborhood Wild writer here, stopping by with some news you might be interested in. I know you got some big news today already, so I'll keep this short.

In addition to trying to find a positive vibe while covering the Wild, I work for an organization called Defending the Blue Line. We help make sure military kids can play hockey no matter the situation their family is in. We do this by issuing equipment, grants for association fees, or even sending the families to NHL games across the league.

Why does this mater to you? As you can see from the picture above, the Ohio State Buckeyes are going to host a military appreciation event on January 21st, in which they wear some camo sweaters, and then raffle them off. Should be a pretty cool event.

Not sure how many Buckeyes hockey fans there are around here, but thought I would let you know about the event. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. If you have any questions about the event or DTBL, please feel free to ask in the comments, or through Hockey Wilderness.

Hockey Analytics 2011 NHL Review

Hockey Analytics 2011 NHL Review

One of my favorite hockey analysis websites is back with their 2011 NHL Review - a massive 90 page document that details the performance of teams and players during the 2010-2011 NHL season. The writing is clear and thorough, and the author (Alan Ryder) provides a great introduction to his Player Contribution (PC) tool. The spreadsheet with PC data is also included for reference and reader exploration.

It's a very educational and eye-opening look at the relative value of individual players. The 90-page length makes this a slightly daunting, but very rewarding way for stat-geeks like me to spend some time reading about performance in the NHL.

Boone Jenner was named to Team Canada for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship. He'll likely play a defensive role for Canada, and will be one of the more physical players in the tournament.

Kristian Huselius Moved Off Of IR

GM Scott Howson announced that winger Kristian Huselius is being taken off of IR, and it appears he will play tonight in Edmonton. This is an interesting development for a club currently nightly scratching a forward with top-six potential/credentials, and also that has been struggling to score with consistency.
