Umberger Talks Third Jersey - Kinda

A hat tip for The Dark Blue Jacket, who caught R.J. Umberger's appearance on Puck Daddy Radio, and a brief discussion of the oh-so-secretive third jersey. Not much in the way of details, but he confirmed it has an "old school" look to it. Take a look and see what you think of DBJ's conclusions!

Avs, Monsters announce extension

No exact term but it's a "Multi-year" deal. Well, so much for that idea.

Standing In The Breach

I was going to write a Veteran's Day post, but a Preds blog, The View From 111, did a better post than I could hope to craft. Instead, I will simply ask you to read it, and offer my sincere thanks to all veterans who have served their country.

Talking 3rd Jerseys

Puck Daddy's take on the unveiling of our new jersey: "The Jackets are inviting fans to the Mall at Tuttle Crossing in Columbus on Wed., Nov. 24 to witness the new jersey's debut ... as the Blue Jackets are playing the New York Islanders on Nassau Coliseum ice that night."

Garon Named 2nd Star Of The Week

Thanks to his back to back shutouts, Mathieu Garon has been named the NHL's second star of the week for 11/5-11/12! In six appearances with the Blue Jackets this season, Garon has posted a 4-1-0 record with a 1.28 goals-against average, .951 save percentage and two shutouts. Congrats to Garon on his well deserved recognition. Former Jacket Raffi Torres was also named the #1 star of the week for his play with the Vancouver Canucks, and the #3 star of the week is St. Louis' Jaroslav Halak.

Third Jersey To Be Unveiled 11/24

With all the speculation over the new third jersey, it's not surprising that the team has chosen to make an event out of it. The Blue Jackets will hold a live unveiling of the jersey during the first intermission of the game against the New York Islanders from the Mall at Tuttle Crossing, including setting up a "viewing party" in the mall's center court area. The unveiling will also be simulcast on Fox Sports Ohio for those unable to make it to the unveiling, and the Blue Line store at the mall will be open until 11pm that night for anyone wishing to buy a jersey. (Or, I assume, to pick up advanced orders.) The team will also be holding contests to give away the third jersey to lucky fans on the website, along with other prizes. You can see more details at the linked press release.

Jackets To Honor Local Vet

Next Wednesday, as part of Military Appreciate Night, the Blue Jackets will award the 2010 Patriot Award to Lima Company Corporal Greg Hughes, USMC. Corporal Hughes was wounded in Iraq by an IED attack in 2005. The team will also honor serving and former members of the armed forces attending the game, and will be holding fund raisers for Operation Buckeye to send care packages to troops abroad from around the state.

Editorial note: I got home from last night's game ready to write a recap, but when I came in the door one of my cats had fallen and badly hurt herself. After taking her to the vet, it was determined that the humane choice was to put her down at 8am this morning. I'll be back to talk hockey tomorrow, but I really don't have it in me to say much else right now.

The Jackets Are Better Than We Think

Remember how we talked about getting a look at our team through the eyes of an outsider? How about through the eyes of cold, hard math? Gabe over at Behind The Net took a look at Columbus over the last three years, and the results actually back up one of the old jokes: If the Jackets weren't in the Central division, they'd actually be good. FASCINATING reading. Go check this out!

"Our owner doesn't like hockey."

According to an interview in French with Montreal radio station CKAC (a translation has been provided in the link), Derick Brassard mentioned that among the teams struggles, it feels like new team owner John P. McConnell doesn't appear to like hockey - including mentioning that JPMac decided not to appear in the team photos this year, something that his father never did. When it's a foreign language interview, you're always worried about things being blown up a bit for the "home crowd", much like the issues with Nikita FIlatov and Russian reporters, or the problems the Leafs had with interviews in Czech papers with the family of Tomas Kaberle. That said? This is not the first time people have questioned how committed John P. McConnell is to the Blue Jackets, though it's the first time I've even possibly heard of it being said by a player. Perhaps the best answer would be for JPM himself to sit down with the Dispatch, local radio, or even local TV news to talk about the team. JPM appears to prefer to take a "hands off" approach day to day and let Scott Howson and Mike Priest handle things, but it would be a good vote of confidence if he were to show his face around the office now and then.
