2014 NHL Draft Prospect Profile #34 - Robby Fabbri

Bruce Bennett

Next up is Kerby Rychel's Guelph teammate Robby Fabbri.

Robby Fabbri

Position: C
Current Team: Guelph Storm (OHL)
Date of Birth: January 22, 1996
Place of Birth: Mississauga, Ontario
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 165 lbs
Shoots: Left

Robby Fabbri is a guy we in Columbus now know a little more about given that he saw Kerby Rychel join his team this year en route to an OHL Championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. An undersized player, Fabbri makes up for that with speed, agility, effort, and solid offensive skills. Fabbri finished the year as the 21st-ranked North American skater in NHL Central Scouting's final rankings.

Undersized players have to work all that much harder in many respects, and in that regard Fabbri fits the bill. He can skate, has good hands, works his tail off, and isn't afraid to get physical. He knows how to find space for himself on the ice, and his "hockey brain" is very good.

Fabbri is a below average sized buzz saw who works hard and has some of the best feet in the entire draft. He uses his speed and mobility to be shifty and elusive but is also willing to play physical. His hands are skilled, he shows some creativity on the ice and has a quick shot release. - Elite Prospects

Although his smallish frame might steer away some teams, Guelph Storm forward Robby Fabbri is a player who has shown extremely well. He’s got an innate ability to sneak into scoring areas uncontested and strike quickly. Fabbri displays great hands and hockey sense so productive numbers naturally follow him. His skating is top-end featuring quick first steps and elusive edgework, both elements that contribute to his success as an undersized player. Fabbri thinks the game at an advanced level, possesses a competitive attitude and if size wasn’t a consideration, he’d be considered a top 10 pick. Don’t be surprised to see him as a top player years from now as his potential is very high. - Brendan Ross - Dobber Prospects

A Good Fit in Columbus?

I think he could be, though the Jackets are already flush with undersized guys. He has many things the club wants: speed, both on his skates and in his brain, a good compete level, hockey sense, and an ability to do good things with the puck on his stick. If he were but a few inches taller and a bit stronger, he would almost make perfect sense for the Jackets.
