As of 3-16-13, the Blue Jackets are sitting two points outside the 8th spot of the West. This is a very different view compared to dead last in the NHL team we saw in early February.
The trade deadline is 17 days away. If the team continues its winning ways over the next two weeks, what moves are made? Will Columbus be approaching the deadline as a buyer? I say yes. Here are some stats to keep in mind.
8th seed last year 1.15 pts./game
1.15*48= 55.6 pts.
The Jackets will need about 56 pts to have a shot at the 8th seed. They must avg. 1.45 pts/gm for the rest of the season to match the pace of the King's 8th seed from last year.
8 of the Jackets 12 losses in regulation are by 1 goal. (Including empty netters)
19 Games left. 7 Home 12 Road
Avg. record of away opponent: 30.25 pts. at 27.16 games played
The Jackets avg. away opponent is the 8th seed in the conference.
The Jackets avg. home opponent is the 7th seed in the conference.
Goals For Avg. (GFA) 2.01, 15th in Conf.
Goals Against Avg. (GAA) 2.45 6th in Conf.
The 2011-2012 Kings:
GFA 2.25 14th in Conf.
GAA 2.01 1st in Conf.
I think the Jackets should be buying at the deadline. If (and this is a big IF) Bob can keep that GAA down and someone is brought in to get the goal scoring up, these boards will be talking playoffs and not draft position in May.
What do you think?
