The 2011-2012 Columbus Blue Jackets were supposed to be good. With Jeff Carter, Wiz, Nash, ect, fans of the franchise anticipated another playoff run. Boy were we all wrong. The Jackets finished with the worst record in the NHL, and now Carter is gone. Nash also may be gone as well very soon. Do not fear though, my friends, as I see hope on the horizon. While the Jeff Carter trade ended really bad, the Jackets managed to squeeze Jack Johnson out of it. Johnson is a huge pick up, and has already made an impact with Jame Wisniewski. If you add in Vinny Prospal, R.J. Umberger, and Cam Atkinson (if his "Camsanity" continues), you have a strong core of goal scorers. They will still need help, which is where my second point comes in: the draft. While the CBJ was shafted out of the number 1 pick, I actually think that it may work out better for them in the end. Edmonton will HAVE to draft Nail, because if they dont, the hockey world will see them as crazy. Since Edmonton needs defense, they will likely trade away the pick. And so we find ourselves in a win- win situation; if the Jackets get the number 1 pick from Edmonton, they get Yakupov, if they go number 2, they get Fillip Forsberg, who I personally think is a better fit for them anyways. The third and final piece of the puzzle is SOLID GOALTENDING. Steve Mason was cool when he was good, but I think we all agree he needs to go. With Roberto Luongo possibly out as the Canucks' goalie, I coult totally see a Nash-Luongo trade. If that doesnt happen, Nash could be bartered for another goalie elsewhere, such as in Saint Louis, where there are two very talented goalies. My final point here is that the Jackets are the biggest underdogs in the NHL right now. This reminds me of the 2011 Bengals, who were projected to finish dead last in the NFL without Carson Palmer. With nobody (other than us loyal fans) believing in them, they could defy the odds and actually make the playoffs. A longshot? Yes. Feasible if these things occur? Totally. So lets all rally behind our team and carry the flag!
