Game Thread 54: Dallas Stars at Columbus Blue Jackets

Dallas Stars at Columbus Blue Jackets, Feb 9, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Blue Jackets vs. Stars

The season series is set to wrap between these two clubs, and the Jackets have a chance to knot it at two wins apiece with a win tonight. It would also mark three straight wins, which I don't have to tell you would be pretty unprecedented 'round these parts. If you read the preview, you may remember that it's been basically a year. A. Year.

At any rate, no changes in the lineup tonight for Columbus, as they're trotting out the same squad that won the first two games in this streak. The Stars are struggling a bit, with just three wins in their last 10 and a ho-hum 16-20-2 record over their last 38 games.

Brenden Morrow is out for Dallas tonight, but otherwise they come in a healthy bunch. For Columbus, Ryan Johansen is again in the press box for the fourth straight game. I am vexed.

At any rate, a third win in a row is right there in front of them. Can they take it?

nothing good

We’re in last place, let the kid play!!

Even if we were in contention, he’s one of our better forwards. There has got to be some off-ice issue or something. There’s just no reason to play Gillies in the top 6 over him.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Sure makes you wonder what the issue is between coaches and kids...

Arniel wouldn’t play Brassard and now Richards won’t play Johansen. Bizarre.

Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."

by YankeeCarp on Feb 9, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

I really, really don’t think there is anything going on off the ice. Johansen doesn’t seem like that kinda guy. I think this is more Richards thinking short term rather than long term because he probably thinks he won’t be behind the bench next year.

by cbjfan14 on Feb 9, 2012 8:51 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

…even short term, Johan gives you a better chance to win than a lot of guys on the ice. He’s one of the few guys with a + rating, one of our top scorers…I don’t get why you go with Gillies next to Carter when you have Johanson in the press box.

He certainly deserves a start over Russell and Boll.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

It simply doesn’t make sense. I wonder what Howson thinks about this, becuase it’s not just a coaching decision, but a developmental issue. He should be talking to Richards about Johansen’s status, I would think.

Well....

Looks like it’s going to be a long night. Time to start drinking

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 7:18 PM EST reply actions

….word is Methot will not return after taking that puck off the face.

Just what we need, MORE injuries

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:01 PM EST reply actions

It’s been that kind of season. Just brutal!

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah…and if there’s anyplace an injury hurts worse right now, its the blueline.

Who do we ice Sat night if Methot can’t go? Tyutin, Johnson, Moore, Clitsome, and ???? Everyone else is hurt.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, we don’t even have Lebda anymore. I have to say though, that he didn’t play as bad as advertised.

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

…he was serviceable. Certainly, and given our injury situation, was a necessary addition.

I was even hopeful that with his decent play, we may have been able to unload him for a few peanuts at the deadline. I’d settle for a 7th round pick and a popcorn machine. So much for that.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

What a beautiful passing play on the PP. Was that really the Jackets? 3-2, we now have a chance again.

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 8:21 PM EST reply actions

NASH ON THE POWERPLAY

…still fight in the boys in blue. 3-2 hockey game now, they’re right back in it.

Two pretty powerplay goals….Brass across the point to Tyutin who rifles it to Vinny on the redirect.

Then Brass setting up Nasher was just beautiful

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:22 PM EST reply actions

2 great passing plays by Tyutin and Brass. It’s so much easier to score into an open net, isn’t it. I hope that they can build on these kinds of plays. Wonderful to see!

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Brassard is definitely growing into the playmaker we hoped he had the potential to be when he was drafted…and just showcased it.

He also seems to have nice chemistry with Nash.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, good things comes from pairing a scorer with a passer, and Brass has definitely looked like our best forward in the past ten games or so. Very good to see. I am also glad Nash finally scored. He has been fighting the puck lately, and we need our best player to play well.

Blargh evening exams. What a miserable reason to miss the first 2 periods. At least they’re trying a comeback rather than just falling apart completely.

Stars are content to just dump and change. Did they hire Arniel?

…come on, we should capitalize on this. Keep the pressure up and good things will happen.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:06 PM EST reply actions

The Jackets seem a bit out of sync right now. They may have to get the cycle going to get some offensive zone time because their transitioning passing is just not working.

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. They’re having a hard time getting through the neutral zone.

If you have to, just get through and get a shot on net. Even low percentage…I’ll take an offensive zone faceoff. We’ve got a couple guys who can win the draws in 50, 26, and 7

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry if I’ve asked before, but are any of you Cannon-dwellers going to the CBJ Tweetup thing on Sunday? I was wondering what kind of turnout might be there.

Holy crap you guys – Scott Gomez just scored. It’s pretty obvious The End is near.

AHHHHHHHH

Carter hits the crossbar and then takes a tripping call.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Carter off the crossbar – what a shot he has. But then he took a penalty, which is less good.

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 9:15 PM EST reply actions

Couple nice saves from the Sandman to keep the Jackets in the game.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:17 PM EST reply actions

3-3 tonight. Although the one Dallas goal was on the pseudo-powerplay, Savard was out of the box but not back in the play yet.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

2:00 to go, down by one, and you send out the Pahlsson line? ….don’t like that call.

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:23 PM EST reply actions

Pretty good pressure there. One more push!

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 9:25 PM EST reply actions

WOW

…great pressure with the extra skater.

Props to Brassard for winning that draw,

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:25 PM EST reply actions

Good to see Brass getting those draws, and winning them, at the end of the game.

by Ville A on Feb 9, 2012 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

I know.

I was about to say, from my armchair coaching position, to juggle the line at the end, swap out Umberger with Vermette. Have 50 take the draw. But kudos to Brassard for winning that one clean.

…I think they had 5 forwards on at the end, I liked that setup. Nash-Carter as shooters, Brassard-Prospal at the half boards looking to be the playmaker, Umberger camped in front, and Tyutin at the point.

It was dangerous

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well shit.

Good game anyways

by Josh Owen on Feb 9, 2012 9:25 PM EST reply actions

After all that final push, the Stars get the ENG. Can’t say they didn’t give a massive try at the end.
