Jackets Sign Vinny Prospal to Contract Extension

COLUMBUS, OH - DECEMBER 15: Vinny Prospal #22 of the Columbus Blue Jackets celebrates a second period goal during the game against the Los Angeles Kings at Nationwide Arena on December 15, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by John Grieshop/Getty Images)

Color me surprised when I received an email from Blue Jackets PR this morning, with the words "Columbus Blue Jackets Sign Left Win..." visible on my Blackberry. My first thought was that maybe we signed a prospect to his entry level deal. I opened up the email, and there was the rest of the headline- "...ger Vinny Prospal to One-Year Contract Extension".

I think this is one of those transactions that has various layers. The first of which is of course his on-ice performance. Though Prospal is in a bit of a slump at the moment, he was at or near the top of the Jackets' scoring charts all season. The second, and most important, is his contributions off the ice. Vinny is a veteran player who will take his teammates to task if they aren't carrying their weight. He's got playoff experience, and he's a player who absolutely loves the game. You see this every time he scores a goal.

A third layer, reported by Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch, is that there is a "gentleman's agreement" between Prospal and the organization that will see Vinny take a job within the organization when his playing days are over. At a time when the public image of the Jackets was at an all-time low, this signing gives a boost to how the team looks to those outside of the city and organization. Vinny is willing to commit to living in the city long-term, as have many other former Jackets who return to Columbus after their playing days are over. Andrew Cassels and Freddy Modin come to mind.

The contract itself is valued at $2.5 million. This is excellent value for a 40-50 point player who's main objective is to mentor the young forwards and be a positive voice in the room.

This deal will be criticized by those who are committed to the "nuclear" option of blowing the team up at the trade deadline, as Prospal was arguably the team's most tradeable asset. Before this signing, he was a UFA-to-be, coming off a decent year offensively on a poor team. It was obviously determined that his value to the team both on and off the ice was far higher than whatever they were able to receive back in a potential trade. I'm sure that GM Scott Howson put the feelers out among his GM brethren to gauge what kind of return he could expect for Vinny, and was likely not impressed by what he was hearing.

Regardless of what happens to the other players on the roster before the deadline, Prospal is a part of the core in the short term, and will be a great addition to the organization from a management/coaching/scouting perspective.

If nothing else, there's no player in the NHL who I love to see score a goal more than Vinny.

I love this news!

I love it on every level. Glad VP is sticking around—now as a player and later in the organization. The CBJ need players (and behind the scenes people) like Prospal. Nicely done!

I touched on this on Twitter earlier...

…but bringing Vinny in adds to the "experience" that many have found lacking in this organization. Granted, it’s not an immediate boost, but to have a guy like Prospal working in your organization long-term… it’s a win no matter how you slice it. Whether it’s in player development, behind the bench, or just being a voice in the FO, Prospal is a guy who doesn’t mince words and who knows what it takes to work your way to the top of the NHL. That’s going to count for something, be it in developing young guys, working with the NHL team in practice, or even just helping out in the dressing room when things get tough.

It’s an incredible value for $2.5 million, and it also flies in the face of the whole "NO ONE WANTS TO COME HERE!!" meme bandied about on the Interwebs of late (-cough-Arace-cough-).

My initial reaction to this re-signing was very negative. Prospal is only going to be older next year and he’s unlikely to have a renaissance scoring performance. I felt that in this miserable season, it would be wise to move a UFA contract to a playoff contender in order to gather more parts for improvement next year or perhaps in a package to gain a goaltender/defenseman.

Upon further consideration, while I’m cautious about the actual signing, I feel that this indicates the front office and the player having a trust in the team they’ve assembled in some aspect. While having Prospal in the organization long-term is nice, I don’t imagine he would want to re-sign if he was under the impression that the team was going to suck again next year.

As at least a few people have been suggesting – the offense is there, despite what this performance would have us believe. There is no way so many forwards will have these kind of career lows again. By fixing up the goaltending and defense, the Jackets should be competitive next year. And as long as a coach doesn’t completely misuse players, the problems may not be much deeper than the players in the defensive zone.

I am happy that this seems to push aside the “Nuclear Option” (even if only slightly). If Prospal is willing to come back here and is convinced that he’s not going to spend his next year (and possible final season?) in a completely dysfunctional environment, then I hold out some faith that the Jackets will keep their core together next year.

To me I think it showed we arent going to go with the “nuclear option”. I dont think we would have been able to convince Vinny to stay, even with the after playing career job option.
Good sign to me, as long as the changes that are made are the right ones. I actually have some confidence from what Howson has said that makes me think we will be better by next year. I think he knows a good goalie and defense are necessary, but its up to him to get it done

I thought exactly the same things as you guys. Although my first reaction was one of surprise and slight disappointment, I think it may turn out to be a smart move as long as he stays healthy. As a top nine guy, with good leadership qualities, he is probably well worth the money. Like I said, he’s basically Umberger for half the price, and if this indicates Howson isn’t going nuclear then it’s even better.

Definitely happy with this news. I thought for sure the few positive pieces we had in place this season would be let go for the “nuclear option”, but glad to see this wasn’t entirely the case. Vinny is a great leader, and has been one of the few bright spots on the team this season; a player who gives it his all, even when things aren’t going so well.

Glad to see he’s going to be offered a job here after his playing days, too. I think a few of these players, those that stay upbeat even in the face of a terrible season, can go a long way in the dressing room, so it’s nice to see we at least have one.

My question: I wonder whose idea this was. Howson? Or Patrick? Either way, I must say it’s a good one.

I’m a huge Vinny P fan but I’m not sure how I feel about this. I love what Prospal brings to the locker room in terms of leadership, work ethic, and especially accountability. keeping him in the organization once he’s done playing is fantastic. My apprehension comes from my fear that this extension signals nothing will end up changing in Columbus. We’ll swap 3rd/4th line players and some AHL role players/prospects with another team and be stuck in an eerily similar situation that we’ve been in for the last 5 years.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this offense is much better than what we’ve seen this season and I expect it to be this bad in the future. However, this offense’s potential is still capped at average IMO.

Perhaps this means Howson isn’t allowed to make any significant changes this year because he’s getting canned as soon as the season is over. We can hope right?

Surprising

…I wouldn’t say that this completely rules out the “nuclear” option, although it may not be the complete overhaul that many of us anticipated. However, a “restructuring” of the team may still be on the way.

This signing ensures a veteran voice and leadership in the locker room next year, and may prelude the departure of other veteran players, for example, Umberger and/or Vermette.

I see Vermette as on his way out. Caps could be contenders for him. They need centers. But I think one of Vermette or Umby is definately not going to be here next year. Most likely Vermette as umby really likes it here

I actually think that Prospal is very much the same type of player as Umberger, older yes, but also a bit more skilled. If anything this indicates that Howson might deal Umby, which to me makes a lot of sense. Umberger is way overpaid and to shed his salary could help to bring in some real skill on the blueline. I agree that Vermette is very likely to be traded, and that his versatility will be highly sought after. However, I think that Vermette being traded depends more on what Howson will do with Carter. If he trades Carter, deals Pahlsson (that’s a given), and moves Vermette, we would start to look thin again at center ice. If Carter stays, Vermette will probably end up leaving, that’s my guess. Prospal being resigned is not as important of a factor in regards to Vermette, since he is a winger.

If we can get an Umberger for half price (Prospal), even just for one year, I think it’s worth it. At least until the younger guys get to the next level, which will hopefully not be too far from now.

i like this because its a sign that they arnt gonna blow it all up

other wise they would get the 2nd or 3rd they could get for prospal now

Rangers fan here again

I am very upset that you guys re-signed Vinny. He is a gamer. Always goes hard, and is a skilled player. You want 3 of those guys on your team for wach of your top 3 lines.

This, of course, means that he won’t be going to the Rangers, which is surprising… unless of course he get’s traded to the Rangers, then traded back for next season (?)… That’s wishful thinking on my part. But for you guys, it seems like the team won’t be blown up for next year.

As it goes, the reason that Columbus started off so poorly was because of Wisniewski’s suspension and Carter’s injury. It seems like management wants to see how the team plays the remainder of the year, and what will happen if everyone starts off together during the next season.

Plus you guys will get Yakupov, so your top-6 should be pretty set next season.

Excellent...

I was hoping they’d do this. He’s like Michael Peca, but still scoring. This is awesome news! On a different note: Is anyone going to the CBJ Tweetup thing on Sunday? I’ve got a lady friend coming in from Australia, and we’re going to rock it out.

I approve

I’m all for keeping veterans that can still get it done
