Game 53 Game Thread: Minnesota Wild at Columbus Blue Jackets
Think there's any chance that Colton Gillies and/or even Todd Richards himself put a little Money On The Board for tonight's game? While a game in February for a team so far out of even 14th place may not mean much overall, for these two it will hold some extra meaning for sure. Richards was, of course, fired by the Wild as head coach last summer, and Gillies was put on waivers by Minnesota earlier in January.
Both were mum, per The Dispatch's reporting, but you have to assume they're both going to be a little extra juiced for tonight's game.
As for the nuts and bolts, it will be Curtis Sanford vs. Niklas Backstrom in net, and Mikko Koivu is again sitting out for the Wild (his eighth straight game missed). On paper, this should be a low-scoring affair, with the 28th (Columbus) and 29th (Minnesota) ranked offenses in hockey taking the ice. If only games were ever played on paper...
Richards and Sanford both spoke today about playing hard and giving the fans their money's worth. Talk of playing for the #1 pick was squashed. What if, however, the fans would still like you to sew up that #1 pick?
At any rate, the Jackets should be able to compete tonight. They just have to back up all the talk of not mailing the rest of the season in and actually show it on the ice.

Hey Jackets fans!
Best of luck to your squad tonight.
We have a question over at HW from a reader, wanting to know how attendance is in Columbus. I didn’t know, figured I would ask over here. Thanks!

Hey thanks for stopping by! Hopefully the game is entertaining for everybody watching.
Attendance is reasonable at the games – ESPN’s attendance tool says the home Jackets games have been filled to 80.8% capacity for the year. That’s up from 75.3% last year. It depends on the game and day of the week, but the turnout isn’t bad for a club in the middle of a lost season.

Nice. Thanks. Did not know about that ESPN thing. Thanks for that, too.

No problem. I personally find it interesting that Columbus is so high up in road % attendance. I guess everybody else wants to see a win?

No Offense
But its likely cheaper tickets on the secondary Market…
On second thought
That is likely paid attendence, which would mean my first comment is false as the secondary Market tickets are already bought.
Could very well be. Though, if Wild fans expect that, they are likely not paying attention. Jackets own the Wild

I was at the game as well, definately more than that. The 11,200 released actually sounds about right.
At any rate, definately more than 6-8k. And there was OSU basketball, so not horrible
nationwide holds what like 20-21k people?
i dont think it even was halfway full, my row had 2 people in it, and i saw some sections with no more than 30 people
Capacity is just over 18K

So that first powerplay looked really good for a while there. Legitimately dangerous. And then the shift after the powerplay, Brass looked like a man possessed entering the zone. I like it so far.

Carter looks very engaged, Nash and Brass are both flying out there, and the 3rd/4th line guys look tolerable tonight. This is a nice change of pace.

Umby looks half-good tonight. He’s moving well (for once) but is still making weird passes and doesn’t seem to be on the same page as everybody else.

I have always felt that Umby plays the game by himself, kind of like Nash but without the skill. I wonder how much Umby has been hampered by injures this year though. He doesn’t look quite right this year. Even though he was never a good passer or skater, you could always count on him to score goals and to battle. This year, not so much.
That goal for Prosser (ties up the game) was his first NHL goal. That means we’ve got two of those at Nationwide tonight (Savard’s was a first as well).

Indeed
Prosser just inked a 2 year, one way deal yesterday. Said his next step was to score his first goal. Guess he did that.
Also, fun fact. He looks just like Stiffler.

That’s really cool and good on him for making it happen! And your fun fact seems 100% accurate.

These player interviews (and coach interviews for that matter) with Natalie Taylor are crazy awkward for everybody involved.

But against the Jackets, the powerplay is always good. Easily stoppable force meets simply moved object?

Am I crazy, or does Brass look like the best Jacket out there so far? He’s skating well, he looks reasonably physical, he’s winning puck battles. I continue to be amazed that Arniel wouldn’t play him.

The Dispatch recently said that the team had asked Brass to gain muscle weight over the summer which he did. However, he got much slower and it’s taken him this long to loose the “extra” weight. I don’t think that is the entire explanation, obviously Arniel didn’t like him for some reason, but he appears faster now than he did early in the season. Interestingly, the same thing happened with Voracek and Commodore over the summer a couple seasons ago. Maybe their training programs have to be better adapted for the player’s individual skill set rather than fitting the coach’s style of play. Just a thought. And yes, I agree Brass has been good lately. Nash hasn’t showed us a whole lot this year. I am sure hoping that he hasn’t peaked already, and that he will show us some of his “old stuff” soon.
I think it’s misleading to watch Nash. He has been playing with ineffective players much of this year (which doesn’t help him do anything), all while still drawing top defensive players from other teams. I mean, you’d hope he would overcome this somehow, but players shouldn’t have to work completely alone.

This whole stat about having 29 different players score a goal isn’t necessarily a positive (despite what the Jackets and Fox Sports seem to think). I’d much rather have a winning record with a consistent, healthy lineup.

It isn’t just you. And that’s unfortunate because I figured Prospal would be a reasonable guy to trade at the deadline. I mean, he still should be, but he doesn’t seem quite as valuable anymore.

Brass-Carter and Dorse/Prospal on that powerplay? I actually liked how it looked on ice. Maybe Brass and Carter should play together more often?

During the line change, quite nearly a beauty Carter-Nash-Prospal setup that just falls through at the last moment.

I wonder if Carter is trying to send a bit of a message with all the rumors about him flying around. I have a feeling that some people who have been shouting “TRADE HIM” may change their minds if he keeps playing like this. We really need his scoring.
I don’t want the Jackets to move Carter, Nash or Brass. I think it would be idiotic to ship any of them out without a massive return. And considering the backlash to Carter’s attitude and his 10 year contract, he might not bring back all that much for the Jackets.

Have people been shouting “trade him”? I havent noticed many fans wanting to trade him, just that it might happen. I may be wrong.
I do not want to see Carter go as long as he is willing to play and try here. When he is flying like he was in the first period and most of the game, he is unbelievable. His shot is epic and hes great on the PP drifting around the slot.
I would only trade Carter if we get a great return (Solid, for sure number one goalie) or if he absolutely wont play here. Even if he would be willing to try til the end of the season and change his attitude, his value would be much higher at the draft .
Typical of this year, Vermette totally misplays a feed from Nash off a 2-on-1 chance. I wish Nash would’ve just shot it himself. A powerplay is coming anyway, so I guess that’s okay.

Wow great save by Sanford to bail out the CBJ defense at the end of the powerplay. The damn trapezoid didn’t help things either.

I am seeing less “dump and change” in the third period lately when we have the lead, wich is a good thing. Arniel was big on keeping the shifts short, but I felt this never worked because we never had enough time to actually possess the puck.
Same thing here – they’re actually trying to sustain a bit of pressure and go with it rather than sitting back and watching the lead evaporate/never get a chance to catch up.

Clitsome looks terrible on the point during the powerplay and he’s doing a great job turning the puck over too. I like the guy (Clarkson player, after all) but he’s not very good tonight.

Yes, it’s nice to see a good game every once in a while, but I’d be more upset if the team managed to really waste the year by not getting a top-two draft pick.

Good night for Sanford, Carter and Savard. I also like that Moore is looking so solid. He has actually surprised me this year. I hope that we will see Johansen soon again and that he will have a great ending to the year. I’m not sure why he’s not playing to be honest.
Moore has probably been the biggest bright spot this season for me. Nikitin is up there too. I was honestly really worried about his development after his horrific season in the AHL last year and he looked rather weak when called up. This year, he can win battles, his positioning has improved in the defensive zone, and he looks much more comfortable and poised carrying the puck. Lets hope he can continue his development into a strong skating defensemen. If he, Savard, and Niktin take another step by next year, our defense looks that much better. Still need to add another top D man or two, but this sure would help.
It frustrates me when Johansen doesnt play. I understand sitting him out the occasional game to get a different view of the game and learn consistency and all that, but I dont get three games in a row. The kid makes mistakes. Of course he does. But if he doesnt play, how is he supposed to learn from those mistakes? Sitting him out three games in a row is bad for his development. What new in CBJ land…
