Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Shrapnel - 2/7/12

Game day! Nice to have hockey back in town for a bit - five of the next six games, in fact, are at home...

At The Score, they've decided to recast Stand By Me with a Blue Jackets twist...what you feel about it will be highly dependent on your level of 80s nostalgia.

Meanwhile, Carry The Flag has their weekly prospect report and it appears the Jackets should be getting a few guys back in the next week.

Over at Backhand Shelf, they've got an in-depth look at college hockey players in the NHL and a history lesson.

Icethetics has their first 2012 Jersey Watch, and DBJ takes a hard look at Todd Richards as part of his new Glass Bangers.

At Puck Daddy, Lambert thinks the NHL could learn from the super bowl (and he has some fair points, but I also think the reverse is true), the former owner of the Hartford Whalers isn't impressed with the health of other NHL markets, Ray Emery getting a shot in Chicago, Brian Boyle talking a post-superbowl walk of shame, Jordan Leopold in a nasty collision with Lindy Ruff, and wondering if Ryan Nugent-Hopkins may no longer be a sure thing for the Calder Trophy (especially since he was hurt in last night's game vs. Toronto).

At the Dispatch, Todd Richards is still calling for the team to focus on pride, and Ryan Russell is making himself a home through hard work.

Finally, it's not hockey related, but there is a cat on the pitch. This is not innuendo. It is not some strange code phrase. There is a cat on the pitch at Anfield. A cat. On the pitch.

Just to let everyone know, over at the “GOON” Facebook page, Jody Shelley is the enforcer of the week and they have posted a couple videos of some of his fights from his time here in Columbus. Makes me miss #45! Go Jackets! http://www.facebook.com/GoonFilm

STILL BELIEVE COLUMBUS

Pretty certain that Lambert piece was satirical. For the first few paragraphs it isn’t really clear, but once he gets near the end he writes:

“Another reason hockey’s championship isn’t a bigger deal is that the League presents the trophy to the winning team so archaically. Fans don’t want to see players who were just blocking 100-mile-an-hour slap shots and getting run at 30 miles an hour into Plexiglas walls by 200-pound men in suits of armor raising a trophy above their head in victory after several months of hard-won battles. They don’t deserve it.

No, they want to see it done by the doughy old billionaires in those really cool blue dress shirts with white collars who bravely fronted the money for the team’s paychecks (unless they were cut in Week 3 and never got another cent no matter what their contract said).

You know, the real heroes."

I highly doubt he’s serious. Plus, its Lambert.

Of interest to the “Fail For Nail” campaign, the folks over at Puck Worlds have a very illuminating commentary on Yakupov’s choice to not participate in the CHL Top Prospects game and his subsequent suspension. It’s a great writeup and makes me feel better about how the player handled his injury.

It sounds like the CHL commissioner wasn’t exactly working on a rational level for player safety – and it wasn’t something restricted to Yakupov either. Noted prospect 1B Mikhail Grigorenko appeared to go through a similar injury analysis by the CHL. Yakupov’s situation was made more dramatic by the young player actually having a doctor advise against playing after sitting out the final 2 periods of the prior game.

CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

As stupid as the suspension was, it may turn out to be good for Nail to rest another two games to properly heal his injury. And that could end up being a good thing for the Jackets too if they are lucky enough to get him. From what I have heard and seen, there is nothing indicating that this guy isn’t top notch, physically and mentally, and he seems to be a nice guy as well. If we get Yakupov in the draft, I would be thrilled! I think we could definitely use his speed and playmaking to complement guys like Nash, Johansen and Carter (if he is still around).
