Game Thread 60: San Jose Sharks at Columbus Blue Jackets
San Jose Sharks at Columbus Blue Jackets, Feb 21, 2012 7:00 PM EST
The Jackets get another piece back, as Nikita Nikitin is off the IR list and should be in tonight's game. It looks like they'll still be without James Wisniewski, and Curtis Sanford and Jared Boll are on IR at the moment. But still... another solid piece to the blue line is coming back.
The Sharks are scuffling a bit, losers of four of five on this nine-game road trip (1-3-1); tonight is game #6 for them. They have a smoking hot Phoenix club nipping at their heels, so expect them to come out revved up tonight looking for a slump-buster, which, sadly, the Jackets kinda are.
If the Jackets can channel more of Sunday night's--and last week's--magic, as opposed to Saturday's anti-magic, they've got a puncher's chance. If they play like they did the last time these clubs met--a 6-0 spanking coming out of the All-Star Break--well, then I'd say it's early to bed for us in Blue Jackets Nation.
Enjoy the game!

With the trade today, Tampa essentially gets a first rounder for Downie. What’s this make Pahlsson worth? Prices are high

Good. Pahlsson is perfect trade bait.

It makes me so happy to see Brassard playing well. I was very excited for him after his rookie year, and I always felt like he still had it in him, but since then he had been disappointing. Hopefully he can keep up his good play.

I think Carter is less likely to be traded than Nash, regardless of what the media might say. He’s on a better contract, and he hasn’t performed well this season. This would be a bad sell low move on the part of the jackets. If they think this season was largely a health issue or just a down year, instead of some kind of attitude issue, there isn’t a good reason to trade him. You won’t get fair value for him, and his contract is extremely team friendly.

I don’t know about that. I know a lot of people in the local media think Carter is as good as gone, but I haven’t heard anything close to that from Howson.

I hope the rest of the NHL is paying attention to that. That’s what they’re trading for. That’s why they have to overpay. Rick Effing Nash, damnit.

..is it just me, or does he always look like hes high? I mean I love the kid, but geez his eyes always seem to be in the back of his head haha
He’s a teenage rookie. Unless he was the 2nd coming of Gretzky or Lemieux, he should look a bit lost out there.

Holy hell, when was the last time we chased a goalie in the first period? I keep telling my co-worker I think this team as-is is one top tier d-man and a #1 goalie away from being a playoff team next year. Assuming we can stay healthy.
I actually agree with that. Our forwards are good. Imagine if we had these lines:
Yakupov-Brass-Nash
Prospal-Carter-Umberger
Dorsett-Vermette-Letestu
Gillies-MacKenzie-whatever
Add Atkinson and Kubalik into this mix. That’s a very good top six and a lot of possible combinations for the bottom six.

That all depends on what you’d pay to get those very expensive pieces and general chemistry of the team… but I agree with you. This year was way worse than it should have been. Almost all of these players were proven performers in the past and fell totally flat.

I know there are going to be big moves and some guys are going to be gone but I would love to see what Richards could do with this group given a full year. Oh and with Howson gone.
I think Howson has done most things right, outside of picking a head coach.

His odd faith in Mason and inability to deal with cap space/contracts are not so good. I’m more negative about him than positive.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
I don’t know how much it is faith in Mason so much as being too timid to go hard at other options when he had the chance. Still a negative, but not as bad.
The cap space/contract issue is what happens when you take a gamble and fail. He gambled that Brassard and Mason (among others) would continue to play well. By locking them up early, he locked them into what would have been favorable contracts. If he had waited to see how they turned out, he risked them becoming much more expensive. As a strategy, I’m ok with it, it’s a sound plan. Like any plan though, it looks bad when things don’t go as you expect.

I just haven’t been a fan of Howson from the get go. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
Also
You completely left Johansen off of your list of lines. Ahem. :-)

It Only Took 60 Games?
This appears to be the team I expected to see at the beginning of the season. Goals by Umberger, Nash, and Carter (2). Amazing that we might be seeing the last game of two, or even, three of those guys. But this has been such a disaster of a season that the one thing Howson can’t do is nothing.
At least it was an interesting first period, for a change. Now don’t flash back to the Preds game.
I normally don’t buy into this crap and I think it’s mostly meaningless, but… Do you think Umby is pissed that he lost his “A” to Dorse/Prospal?
And/or does anybody actually keep track of who wears the “A” regularly, because while I assume Umby has been wearing one all year, I don’t actually know that for sure.

According to Jeff Little
"120 "A"s handed out by #CBJ (incl. tonite) — Umberger 52, Vermette 29, Carter 11, Wisniewski 11, Prospal 9, Dorsett 8"

I think Pahlsson should most definitely be traded. Not that I don’t like him, but his value is about as good as it’s going to get.

I’m trying not to let this performance color-blind me to the issues facing this team. But, it does make one wonder: if the club had been healthy all year (including, and especially, Dekanich), what would we have seen?
On one hand, these guys look completely different over the past seven or eight games, minus the Blackhawks game. That said, is it all a mirage? I mean, their PP has been converting at a 33.3% clip over the last nine games. You can’t count on that kind of production for a whole season.
I’ve come down on it all this way, watching tonight’s game: IF you can, trade Carter and whatever else you need to make the deal work to the Kings for Bernier and Johnson, and then unload the UFAs for picks. DO NOT trade Nash.

I like the idea of keeping Nash too but I think he’s disheartened that they even asked him to waive his no movement clause.
Somebody brought this up with Dark Blue Jacket over twitter – if Howson is fired, does that signal to Nash that the guy who wanted to move him was wrong and that the franchise still needs/wants him? And if that’s right, would it also apply with Carter?
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
Also, how do you know that it isn’t Patrick pushing for Nash and Carter to be moved? It sounds to me like the new philosophy of character, speed and skill has his stamp all over it. I think he also likes the idea of loading up on assets and young talent just like he did with the Pens. I know that Howson is still the GM but I think they are more of a team now – Howson/Patrick. So if Howson is fired it may not change the direction the team is taking, plus firing Howson a week before the trade deadline just won’t happen.
Rick Nash is a glorious player for giving that open goal to Carter, too. Seriously, that was all his but he fed it over to Carts for the trick.

Three things stick out in my mind.
1. Mason looked sharp the majority of the time. Deflected shots from the point he can only do so much about. By and large, he was what we needed. Just keep us in the game. He earned a franchise record because he did just that.
2. Our transition out of the D-zone was silky smooth a good chunk of the time. Yes, we got Nikitin back, and I’m sure that helped. Let’s not forget though, that transition was excellent despite not having Wiz in there. That’s a good sign.
3. Perhaps most surprising, those boys were just oozing chemistry. Everyone seemed to be on the same page. Honestly, I can’t think of another game from this season or the latter half of the last one where the Jackets looked like such a cohesive unit. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come. Just don’t get too hot … I still want Nail.
I’m also starting to think much of this has Richards’ fingerprints all over it. Not saying he’s earned the head spot permanently, but he certainly deserves consideration.
