Game 56 Game Thread: Anaheim Ducks at Columbus Blue Jackets
Anaheim Ducks at Columbus Blue Jackets, Feb 12, 2012 6:00 PM EST
The Blue Jackets and Ducks finish off their four game season series at Nationwide tonight, and the Jackets are pushing for a rarity: a season series win (there are actually a few teams against whom the Jackets could pull off this accomplishment, though the Ducks are the first). As bad as everything has been all season, the fact that they could actually take three of four from another team in their conference is kind of mind-boggling.
The Ducks, however, are still pushing to be in playoff contention as the trading deadline nears, so they will have some extra juice for this game. The Ducks are also the more rested club, having last played on Friday in Detroit and therefore having been in Columbus last night resting while the Jackets were up in Minnesota beating the Wild 3-1.
Columbus got James Wisniewski back last night, and also got a stellar performance (remember those?) from Steve Mason. Given the short turn-around and the injury to Curtis Sanford, the goaltending situation is one to watch tonight. The last time Mason saw the Ducks, they pummeled him and ultimately pushed Scott Arniel out the door as head coach.
Columbus won without their best effort last night, thanks in large part to Mason's play. They also, however, scored a Power Play goal for the fourth straight game, dating back to their last matchup with Anaheim. It would be nice to see the improved play of the PP unit continue.
At any rate, strap yourselves in and let's see if the Jackets can notch a positive benchmark amidst a season of negatives!

That didn't take long
Everyone on the ice lost track of the puck. …except Corey Perry. Ducks goal. Here’s to hoping that Mason can keep his confidence, or this is going to be over quick.
I don’t really fault Mase too much for that one. Very good shot. I wish the Jackets could come out a little better though.
Not his fault…everyone lost track of the puck. Tyutin was standing there looking around, he blocked the initial shot and lost the puck. Perry found it first, and well, Perry is Perry. From the TV angle it looked like Mason was kind of screened by Tyutin, and Perry found that little sliver of daylight in the top right corner. If that’s on anyone, it’s on Toots
WOW
How did they not get that puck past Hiller? Carter’s shot was wicked…then I thought for sure Johan had that rebound. Gotta roof it over the pad
Carter has been very good since he came back from injury. I would think that it may make Howson’s decision to trade him a bit more difficult.
At this point, nothing would surprise me. Honestly I’ve completely lost faith in Howson. “Handpicking” Arniel as the coach, and then blatantly ignoring the coaching problem. All the hockey minds he ran out of Columbus, and poor contracts and signings. If he trades Carter, I highly doubt we will get in return what we payed. That could potentially be one of the most damaging things he could do to the organization.
Hey everyone, just out of curiosity, did Prout get sent to Springfield?.

Yes, this looks like your typical Mason game where things are just out of sync. Some of it is Mason and some of it is the play in front of him. Either way it doesn’t work. And why is Brass the one to fight? This is indeed getting out of hand.
He’s a hothead. I respect the compete in him, and this time he held is own. Granted, Visnovsky isn’t a fighter either…and the whole team was scrumming. Those two were seperate from the pack, and it just boiled over.
The whole game is ugly, every line, Mason, the defense, everything. Even some of our chances are bittersweet, becuase we can’t seem to finish.
Bad puck movement also on the PP. It just goes to show you that when Brass has the puck the PP is much better. We simply don’t have enough playmakers like that.
That too many men on the ice looked stupid. Just confusion all around… I hope we can get coach Q or someone else to come in and clean up this mess.
…speaking of ugly, oh hey, Corey Perry picks up the hat trick.
Maybe we’ll see poor Allen York get his development completely screwed up and get thrown to the wolves again. Coach Q would be perfect for the Jackets roster, playing to their strengths instead of trying to mask their defensive weaknesses.
As far as Howson is concerned, I think that most of his trades have been pretty solid, but he hasn’t been able to create any chemistry. And there is another goal – Mase is back!
Trading wise he has been decent, although as far as contracts, he’s been awful. That, and going three years without using a mid or late round draft pick to acquire organizational depth at goaltender is just dumb.
Yes, Howson has made many mistakes, although I think this year he is only partially to blame for. I am hoping that “his plan” going forward has a lot of oversight from Patrick and that he gives him sound advice. I think the next few weeks will be very telling.
I’m really anxious to see what this team will look like when all is said and done.
The Prospal signing was a big surprise to me, and I have to admit I like the move. A lot of other people around the NHL seem to mock it though. I can’t say I blame them, a team starts off a rebuild by signing a 37 year old player.
I just want a little respect. That’s all.
The Prospal signing surprised me too, and I am still trying to figure it out fully. However, I think it’s mostly a personality thing. Howson really likes Prospal and is trying to get players and people into the organization with his attitude and work ethic. I actually think that Patrick may have had something to do with this. In interviews he always talks about character and how important that is to scouting, so it makes sense. Also, it will make it easier to trade players like Umberger and Nash while transitioning into the “new team”. Not saying they will be traded, but if Howson does trade a guy like Umby he will still have a positive veteran voice in the room.
That was my thought as well. I don’t think the team will trade Nash, just because he is the face of the franchise. That’s just my prediction, Priest meddles in hockey decisions a little, and from a business perspective, you don’t trade the guy whose face is all over all your advertising.
The Prospal signing opens the door for an Umberger-Vermette departure though.
Hahaha, although I am a little peeved to see Johanson back on the fourth line. At least for that shift anyways. For his developement, he needs to be playing 1st or 2nd line minutes. You learn from experience, this season is lost, get the kid some seasoning.
I have no idea why Johansen isn’t playing in the top six, but at least he is on the ice tonight. I think he needs a coach that will tell him to use his skill instead of always talking about his shortcomings. Just my attempt at playing coach, but it seems obvious that you let a talented player like that actually make plays instead of dumping the puck all the time.
Yeah, he’s got to get a little confidence built up. Game experience. He’s got the skills, he’s just only 19. The kid just needs a little coaching and guidance.
19 is very young, and these days kids are expecting much more feedback than in the old days when you just did as you were told. But it sounds like he is not getting any mentoring or help which is odd. Plus he needs much more ice time – what is there to loose at this point?
hey
idk but i would take Malcolm Subban in the draft if i was cbj get a late first rd pick with trading mason… he look like he could really become a nhl goalie quick
A few good looks…and Mason seems to have calmed down. Either that, or he just doesn’t give a shit anymore and he’s just out the playing hockey and his mental issues are gone.
If carter buried that shot we would be right back in it
Good thing I’m not manning the goal horn, I saw that wide open net, the number 7 on the sweater, I thought it was automatic. Guess not
Agreed. Sloppy. Like you said earlier, the only playmaker we have is Brassard. Johan should, and hopefully will be, another player like that.
For all the talk about Johansen being a great passer I have not yet seen that much of that. But he is also not playing in his natural center position yet, so hopefully he will get better. I know he has also been told to shoot more and play “simple hockey” so that hasn’t helped either.
