Game Thread 55: Columbus Blue Jackets at Minnesota Wild
Columbus Blue Jackets at Minnesota Wild, Feb 11, 2012 8:00 PM EST
Here it is, the final meeting between these two clubs. Perhaps it is Todd Richards' last chance for some payback against his former club.
More importantly, the Jackets are reshuffling things a bit with the losses of Marc Methot (jaw), Jared Boll (foot), and Curtis Sanford (back). In their places are the returning James Wisniewski, Ryan Johansen, and Steve Mason and Allen York.
The Wild have Mikko Koivu back, and are listlessly plodding along. They will, no doubt, be looking to avenge Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Blue Jackets in Columbus. This is another winnable game for the Jackets if they play the way they have been playing for the most part over the past four games. They have to alleviate the mistakes of the kind that led to the early 2-0 hole they fell into against Dallas on Thursday, and Steve Mason will have to step his game up.

3 CBJ scouts at Phlly-NYR game today including Howson. Howson had long meeting with Holmgren after. So were talking to Philly i would assume, but about what? Not sure what else needs to be done between the two of us.
Still interesting. Will see what comes of it. Only 16 days until deadline. Howson did say that he now has a set plan in place, so I think that will become apparent soon
That’s interesting. I’m curious as to who the Flyers would be interested in. All the rumors surrounding them has led me to believe they’re interested in acquiring another defenseman. That is one thing we are sorely lacking…and I don’t think the Flyers would be interested in anyone we have to offer. Tyutin maybe? I can’t imagine Wiz is on the block. I doubt the Flyers are interested in Lebda or any of our other defenders.
Maybe forward depth for the playoffs? Pahlsson for a pick, etc.
…or some crazy blockbuster deal that moves Nash for Bryzgalov…some other picks/players would have to be changing hands with that one as well. That seems extremely unlikely.
I just don’t see a trade between these two teams that makes sense
Split hockey priorities are a fun thing – Clarkson broadcast on the computer, Jackets on the TV.

I can definately say Masons pads look bigger. I still find it odd that someone who wants to bases his game off of feeling “big” in the net doesnt use the biggest size pads allowed.
It will take him some time to adjust, but hopefully think switch is for the better.
Some goalies (Brodeur comes to mind) feel that slightly smaller pads provide more mobility/speed. The thinking is that if you’re already large enough, the added quickness is useful.

Of course, some people will tell you that Brodeur is a Fraud.

Id be curious to see what Rinne uses. If Rinne uses the bigger pads I would hope Mason would emulate the dimensions. Both play such a similar game with their size.
The difference I see with Brodeur (or a goalie of that style) and Mason is how Mason doesnt necessarily need to be as quick, he just needs to be efficient with his movements
That powerplay was awful. Never got anything going. They looked like they were having problems just with puck possesion, lots of fluttering, bouncing etc. Brassard, Tyutin, Carter, all had problems just getting the puck on their stick. Poor ice?
Either way, they couldn’t enter the offensive zone and set up. Had to dump the puck in a couple times…no good chances. Nothing caps off a bad jackets powerplay like a shothanded chance at the end either.
Wild Goal
Setoguchi. Umby fades away and Brassard was too late getting back. Seto all alone for the rip. And what a rip it was.
That top line is dangerous. Heatley has a nice wrister on him.
…they finally got one past Mase. This may be a long night.
…everybody looked good on that goal. Brassard made a great move, getting into the zone and lingering by the blue line, let the play develop, finds Nash cross ice, who finds Umby in the slot. Nice shot, good goal. Good job by Clitsome pinching in and going to the net for a rebound.
That’s one of the few times the Jackets have looked like an NHL offense.
Powe takes another penalty
PP Jackets. Ugly start. lets hope this one is better.
PP looked so good last game…
Zidlicky runs Mason
Another PP. PP cant be much worse. Another SH opporunity. They are very aggressive.
How was Minny first in the league at one point again? They look absolutely terrible. They havent even lost too many games from injuries. Just a few by Backstrom and Koivu.
They look bad tonight. But Koivu is a big chunk of that team, and they rely on that top line to carry their offensive production. When those guys are going, that team is dangerous. They’ve had a handful of good chances tonight, Mason has just been really good for once.
Mason has been good, but they still dont look very good. And the other games i have watched in the last couple of weeks they have looked bad as well.
Koivu used to be the only thing the Wild could rely on, but Heatly and Setoguchi can share that work load as well, so missing him for a few games isnt the end of the world.
?
Of the Wild’s top ,6 Koivu and Setoguchi have missed a fair amount of games and Bouchard and Lats have missed a huge chunk of the season and are not expected to play again this year.

I forgot about Bouchard also. Any idea where they stand in games lost? Injuries havent seemed to be that bad compared to most teams…
I don’t know how to pull stats like that, it’s been quite a few though.

It does add up with Bouchard out, so that hurts. Still, Minny is healthy tonight and hasnt looked that great. Koivu should be setting Heatley up all day
I count 80 games missed from the Wild's goto top 6.
That’s just going off of games played and I don’t think it included tonights game.

Minnesota was first despite not being very good in any particular category. Their goalies have come back to earth a bit and the rest of their luck has seemingly run out for now.

Some positive hockey news out of Ohio State for the first time in 2012 – the OSU Men’s Hockey team broke their 11 game winless skid at Western Michigan tonight and won 4-3. This keeps their NCAA tourney aspirations on life support for the time being.

Lots of give aways by the defense in the defensive zone this period.

I love Wizmas games. Somebody needs to trick the team into thinking it’s a Wiz return every time.

Good to get that win. Mase saved the day.
