Blue Jackets Roundtable Podcast: Episode IV
It's been more than awhile since we last convened the Blue Jackets Roundtable (Podcast edition!), and for that we offer our apologies. Given how badly the season has gone, hopefully you can understand our lack of desire to talk about "Dude, how crappy are the Jackets right now?" for a half hour.
All of that said, with the announcement of the All Star Game coming to Columbus in 2013, as well as a chance to catch our breath during the current All Star Break, Mike, Matt and I decided it would be a good time to take stock of where the team is, and where it's heading between now and the trading deadline, and then beyond.
So, here you have it: Episode IV, at long last. Click the streaming player below to listen:
DISCLAIMER: We're still working out kinks with our "new" (ish) method of podcasting. I discovered--albeit too late--the settings issue that seems to continually make me talk OVER my compadres, even though when we recorded the podcast we were having a normal, flowing conversation. So for that, my apologies. I'm really not that much of a jerk that I would cut off the guys at the end of each of their answers, so again I apologize for the curtness of the podcast as it sounds. Won't happen again; I figured out what the issue is/was.
If you're having trouble with the streaming player above, you can click here to download the MP3 version
(warning: it's a big file, ~20 MB). Enjoy, and stay tuned for more regular podcasting updates as the trading deadline nears!

Glad im not the only one that has Bishop on the radar. I think he would be plan B.
My guess is most likely is Bernier. If i had to guess, Carter may be going to LA and i would assume Bernier is in the package. Carter would be a good player to use to get a number one goalie. Dont think Canucks can afford Carter for a Schneider, but the Kings could for Berner.
If Oiler pass us for the first overall pick, I really dont see them picking Yakupov. I dont think they are going to want another offencemen. Hall, Eberle, RNH, etc with Paarjarvi, Omark, etc coming up. They NEED a defensemen. So do we. I could see them trading down a spot or two.
What a great year this would be to have two top ten picks with all the defensemen. Maybe if we trade Nash or Carter we can get that done. Who knows.
As for Grigorenko, most people actually have him down to 5 or 6 now. Most have Filip Forsberg ahead of him and a couple defensemen such as Dumba or Ryan Murray. Sounds like he has dropped a bit.
Bernier is an interesting goalie and has a very identical resume to Schneider who I still feel should be our first choice. But I would be very happy to see either one of those guys in a Bluejackets uniform next year. However, it worries me a little bit that neither has been a number one goalie on an NHL team yet.
In terms of defensemen, the first priority should obviously be to trade for veteran d-men that can help the team now, and if we move Carter that should be our main goal (if not a top goalie). We are also lacking good prospects on d and if we could somehow get two first round picks, this would be a good year for it. I would not like the option of trading down though, unless the offer was too good to refuse. If we only have one pick I say we pick for talent first (Yakupov?), and need second (defenseman). I am also not surprised that Grigorenko has moved down a bit, because raw talent is typically more important than being well rounded. I am sure Grigorenko will turn out to be a fine player, but he just doesn’t seem to have the “it factor”.
In terms of who will be in the top 5, this could change pretty drastically in the next few months. Last year, I think that Johansen was predicted to go much later in the first round, just a few weeks before the draft. Howson actually took a lot of criticism for that pick by many fans, who wanted a d-man prospect that could help the team right away. I personally think he made a very wise choice, although we can’t say for sure yet.
If it’s one thing that Howson is good at (my opinion), it is to create package deals where we seem to come out in front or at least not lose. I hope that he can manage to do that over the next six months so that we can accomplish the following. 1, Good goalie, 2, Good defensman 3, Don’t screw up our first round pick. Anything above and beyond that would be great, but I’m not getting my hopes up. My biggest fear is that we dump our assets in a fire sale without getting enough back. Clearly, this is not Howson’s style, but with all the screaming and yelling for the nuclear option going on, you never know. However, with a seemingly smart guy like Craig Patrick watching, that seems pretty unlikely.
