Columbus to Host 2013 ASG?

Edit: I'm being told by several people that McKenzie referred to Columbus as a "finalist", and not as a done deal. Still good, but not the home stretch yet.

Edit To The Edit: Done deal per Puck-Rakers. Get ready!

According to reports credited to TSN Insider Bob McKenzie, the 2013 All Star Game appears to be heading for Columbus.

If true, it is a bittersweet honor, given the way this season has gone. But perhaps the best way to see this is as a recognition of the dedicated and growing fanbase here in Columbus who have truly embraced NHL hockey over the past decade.

With expanded hotel options in the downtown area slated to be completed this summer and the arena issue resolved, it appears that the logistical stumbling blocks that previously kept the Jackets from hosting major events after the 2007 NHL draft have been cleared up, and perhaps this will help to engage a city that has split between writing off the team or reaching a boiling point of frustration in their search for a winner.

This would also mark the first time that a Western Conference team hosted the game since 2007 in Dallas, with the last four games held in Eastern Conference cities.

That said, don't pull on your party hats just yet - the NHL has not officially confirmed anything yet, and the host announcements sometimes come as late in the season as April.

We talked to the Greater Columbus Sports Commission earlier this season about their work to bring the ASG (and other major hockey events) to town - go check out the interview to help get an idea of what may be involved behind the scenes, then watch the events in Ottawa this weekend and dare, perhaps, to dream...

Very Excited!

If this turns out true its gonna be extra special for my wife and I. We are moving to Columbus in Spetember and this would only further immerse us in the excitement of our new home.

An All Star game here would be absolutely amazing.
I have also heard the Caps and I believe Pens being in the mix for the game, so it will be interesting what happens.
Would be so cool to have it here though. What a party that would be.
Where did Bob say this? Was he on the NHLNet?

I agree. If it’s true I will definitely be going. Hopefully by then we will have at least one all star player to cheer for. That would be cool!

Hopefully whoever we draft first will be in the young stars game. That would be a start. Maybe the Johan can pull a Seguin and be an All Star. Or Nash/ whoever our big player is by next year be a captain. With this fan voting, we should be able to get at least one player in. Hopefully…
Either way, I would be there in a heartbeat. Always a great atmosphere at these events

Drumming up the fan support to stuff the ballot box would be fun. I wonder what kind of pro-Jacket lineup we could force into the game… For that matter, I also wonder what particular Jackets will be around to vote for…

Assuming he’s here, I think a fan vote for Umby would work nicely.

I personally can’t envision Nash, Umby and Wiz getting moved (but who knows at this point?). I think that would be a nice CBJ trio to get into the game.

This is all kinds of awesome! I also hope this overtakes any coverage of the Nationwide Arena protest nonsense. (Which is not to say I disagree with the spirit of the protest, but it’s a meaningless gesture)

Yep. This is pretty damn awesome, and may be one of the VERY few things that helps to save some season ticket renewals.

This is great. Arena District is perfect for this sort of event. Hopefully by then we’ll have more than just a rookie in the skills competition participating.

Great News!

I’m not really much of a fan of the All-Star Game itself, but it serves its function, it is just an exhibition displaying tons of goals and sick saves…perfect for non-fans and semi-fans that don’t necessarily know what they’re watching. Either way, the exposure is good for the city and good for the franchise, it may expand the fan base a bit.

Unfortunately, I think this shows that we do have very competent businessmen at the helm of the organization, yet are still lacking in good hockey minds. It no doubt took a great deal of solicitation and effort to get our bid for the ASG through. It’d be nice if they put as much effort into building a winning product.

That rant aside, I’m excited for the All-Star Game next year. The skills competetion is even more fun to watch in my opinion, speaking of which, does anyone know what channel its on tonight?

Versus.

Well NBC Sports Network or whatever the new name is

Congratulations on landing the ASG! :D

We just finished ours here in Ottawa. Here’s what you should know:

Tickets: Priority is given to the corporate and sponsors of the League. They get the first seats. Then full-season ticket holders get their claim (note that you probably won’t have the seat you usually sit in, due to the NHL determining which seat blocks are for their people). Then half-season ticket holders, then perhaps people who buy certain packages. If there’s ever a time to dig deep for tickets, it’s now.

The NHL runs the show in your home arena. I have never seen so many people working so very hard as I did this weekend at Scotiabank Place to put on this production.

Fan Fair: Embrace this. For most people, this will be as close as they’ll get to the players, the trophies, and generally can be considered the most popular part of the weekend. Go to it.

Cost: It’ll be expensive, honestly. But it will do a ton for the city, the hospitality business, and the restaurants.

Heck, if I could afford it, I’d come down just for the Fest (and I need a 2013 Columbus ASG pin as it is.)
