Game 49 Game Thread: Columbus Blue Jackets at Tampa Bay Lightning
I wish I had some witty stuff to say, but much like the Jackets I may have one foot out the door for the All Star Break already. Perhaps we can bill this is that "Hey Steve Mason! FFFFFFUUUUUU!!!!" game, as the two goaltenders most recently tasked with taking his job look to be squaring off tonight. Mathieu Garon goes for the Lightning, and Curtis Sanford goes for the Blue Jackets.
Beyond that, what's to say? Two struggling teams, two banged up teams, two teams nowhere close to their pre-season expectations. Two awful defenses. Two struggling special teams units. THE TWO WORST GOALTENDERS IN THE LEAGUE SITTING ON THE BENCHES!
In a lot of ways, these clubs are mirror images of each other, though the Jackets are lacking in the star-power quotient. Steven Stamkos is also leading the league in goals, but that's neither here nor there. No, these are two teams of which a lot what expected, and from which not much has been delivered. They're both battling injuries, and having trouble keeping the puck out of their net.
So, which team wants it more? Tune in to find out!

Battle of the underachievers.
So Dex is out indefinately again? Hes just as bad as Dipietro. At least we didnt give him a massive contract though.
….bad turnover by Johnson. We got real lucky when that net came loose, Sanford was way out of position.
On a positive note, D Mac is all over the puck, finishing his checks in the offensive zone…putting good pressure on those Lightning defensemen
seconded. please don’t let him go the way of chimera, klesla, malhotra and the other heart and soul players that have walked over the years.
I liked those “energy” lines we ran at the beginning of the season, MacKenzie centering a fourth line with young guys on the wing, it was a rotation with Calvert-Atkinson-Mayorov all getting looks.
I’d like to see another look like that next year, D Mac is defensively responsible enough to cover the ass of the younger kids, and they bring a little offensive spark and youth and energy.
They could be dangerous, especially at home when they get favorable matchups, and in the 3rd period. One of the benefits of playing 4th line minutes is they still have legs late in the game.
THE END IS NEAR! THE END IS NEAR!

so far this year, a garbage truck has punched a hole in my car, my toilet exploded, the blue jackets signed brett lebda and brett lebda scored a goal in the NHL.
when did earth turn into bizarro earth?

Does anyone else think that Lebda’s skating style look “funny”? Or maybe “special” is a better way to describe it.
That’s a good idea. Maybe we should expand on that and not watch anything that happens in our defensive zone. I think we would be much happier that way.
i’ve seen more of an ambling skating style from carter and johansen. i’ve seen carter take off every once in a while but johansen looks like he’s skating through molasses sometimes
I think Carter, Nash and Johansen look a lot slower than they are because they have such long strides. Johansen gets really tired towards the end of his shifts though. Hopefully he can work on his stamina this off season. Lebda has more of a weird wide stance with really fast leg movements, and then he puts his arms out when he tries to go fast. It just looks akward to me, but hey – the guy knows how to score.
brassard
earlier in the season, i didn’t really care if he stayed or got traded.
now, i really hope that howson doesn’t trade him. if anything, with some work on faceoffs and other tune ups here and there, he could possibly make vermette or another forward expendable.
His turnaround certainly doesn’t make me feel any better about how Arniel handled things. Almost makes Brassard’s agent Allan Walsh sound correct about the benching and whatnot…

Agreed. Don’t know that he is a legit first line center, but he certainly looks good enough to be a solid second line center. Plus, we desperately needs someone that can pass the puck and be creative. Who else can do that on this team right now?
Agreed. It also makes me think about the Commodore fiasco. Yes, Commie took dumb penalties sometimes, and yes he wasn’t the best puck handler….but given our awful defense, there’s no way we have 6 guys all better than him.
Arniel lets his personal views get in the way, he didn’t like Commie, he didn’t like Brass, so he didn’t play them…they didn’t play his game.
As soon as I saw lebda had scored I had to check out your reactions. Like I said give lebda a look what’s the worst that can happen?

Argh. I think sanford thought he had the puck because of how it hit the top of his glove.

That was a pretty miserable stretch of play. I’m thinking they’ll only have to zamboni half the ice after this period.

“Jackets have failed to register a shot in the last 8 minutes”
…good to know the stats are as shoddy as their play has looked
At this rate the State of the Union will get more shots in during the first few sentences.

Its hard to be mad….those two guys make some pretty plays on the ice together. Just wish they could get those highlight goals against someone else.
Sure would be nice to see a play like that from the Jackets every now and then.

I’m torn between “Y U NO PLAY HOCKEY” and the stark fact that this team has $18 million bucks on the IR right now. How surprised can we be?

Good point about the injuries, but I don’t know that it makes it any easier to watch. It’s still my team and they are still loosing.
True, true.

Some things that might make jackets fans feel better
Juice- 4.75 million
Phallson 2.75 million
Prospal 2.2 million
Mason (god willing) 2.9 million
So next year these players If not more will be gone that is over 10 million in cap space to upgrade ( ales hemsky matt carle?) the team to potentially turn into a cup contender. I especially like the hemsky idea. I think him and Carter together could be a good duo with brassard/johanson with nash. So look at the positives moves can be made next year

Aside from needing to spend cash on goaltending, I’d far rather see the team spend on getting a better blueliner to go with Tyutin / Wiz / Nikitin / Methot.

The defense and goaltending are so pathetic though. Those need to get a total overhaul before any dream of even playoffs can happen.

true, but there isn’t a lot of “a”-grade goaltending and defense coming up via free agency. they’re probably going to have to trade away forwards and even prospects or picks to suitably address those problems, then try to fill the offensive gaps they just made through free agency.
i wonder if howson can make lightning strike twice by trading for another player that just took a hometown discount on a new deal.
I think any FA spending trying to make us an instant contender overnight would be foolish, we just aren’t good enough. We’re missing too many peices of the puzzle.
I’d like to see some help in net, they need to develop their prospects, Moore and Savard could both be solid NHL Dman in 1-2 years. We still need a true top pair defenseman. Wiz contributes offensively, but he’s second pairing on a good team. Honestly I’m not sure how I feel about Toots anymore, he has too many bad games, and even his good ones are marked by lots of good play, with one or two flubs thrown in.
The one plus is this years draft class….fail for nail aside, it looks like even if the Oilers or someone else beat us to the cellar, there are still a lot of talent in those first 5 prospects.
That’s why I’d like to see carle. ( suter won’t come here and Stuart will stay in Detroit if he doesn’t go to cali

has anyone noticed a trend in columbus’s backup goalies? sanford, dekanich, garon, norrena…
…they’re all either frighteningly bald or getting really close to it.
maybe we just need to find somebody with ed belfour’s samson-esque hockey mullet.
…y’know, we’ve had worse ideas.

Why do other teams try to get another goal late in the third when they are up by two, when all we do is dump the puck so that we can keep our shifts short when we are in that situation? Why?
Well, Timmy, the it’s called the Prevent Defense….because it prevents us from winning.

FAIL FOR NAIL
…well we are the first team to lose 30 in regulation. Nail looks like he’ll be joining the CBJ next season.
Other teams in the cellar, the Sabres won tonight after dropping 5 straight, we’ll have to see what the Oilers do tonight. Speaking of which, I might watch that game, ’Nucks – Oilers, puck drops in a few.
