Game 48 Game Thread: Columbus Blue Jackets at Nashville Predators

Blue Jackets vs. Predators

Steve Mason. Brett Lebda. Playing against a team that just shut us out last week and is hot as all get-out right now.

My advice to you... is to start drinking heavily.

In all seriousness, the All Star Break canNOT come soon enough for this Blue Jackets team. Give them credit; they played the Wings tough and gave them all they could handle en route to their 16th straight home win. Todd Richards is perhaps still enjoying the "new voice bump" in the room right now.

But, sooner or later, you gots to score goals... something this club couldn't do on Thursday against these same Predators. The Preds get Ryan Suter back tonight. The Jackets are without Nikita Nikitin, but do have R.J. Umberger off the IR list. Maybe I'm cynical, but in a season where every guy who can get injured in spectacular fashion seems to, why rush a guy back from a concussion--a guy who admittedly played a game "in a fog" right after getting the injury--when you're two games away from basically a week off? Am I the only one who thinks that's just asking for trouble?

At any rate, strap yourselves in. It should be a bumpy ride tonight.

The FSOhio guys just described Lebda as a “puck moving defenseman.” That’s accurate in that he moves the puck toward the opposing forwards and his own net.

Yeah…puck-moving. Stickhandling and passing are the strong points of his game, clearly.

“Brett Lebda is a good defenseman” and “Brett Lebda didn’t get to play because the Preds bought out his contract” are mildly incompatible phrases. But Rimer isn’t aware of that.

…he’s thinking that Lebda played for the Wings, and the Wings won the Cup, so therefor, Lebda is a good hockey player.

Good teams still have bad players, welcome to the realities of the salary cap, and hanging your hat on a “career year,” when you were the 6th and 7th D-man (he was either scratched or on the 3rd pairing, with limited ice time) on the Cup winning team doesn’t mean you’re a “good defenseman” several years later.

To be fair to rimmer

How long do you think he would have a job If he said anything bad about any jackets player?

Nice start by umby there. Bad turnover that quite frankly should have led to a Preds goal

Another bad one

This one by Vermy, 1-0 Preds. Horrible start. Two horrible turnovers, one goal

I didn’t like the pass from Tyutin, it was kind of in a tough spot for Vermy. It looked like he had to slow down to a standstill to corral it, then was a sitting duck bewteen two Preds forwards. He tried to protect it with his skate, get it out on his tape to get rid of it, and they picked his pocket.

I’m surprised. Why start Kubalik over Johanson? D Mac was listed as probable due to illness…let Johan play pivot on the 4th line and get more seasoning at center, and play less minutes.

Just seems like there are better options than sending him to the press box….

by Josh Owen on Jan 23, 2012 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Well i think he should have played instead of Umby. Give Umby some more time to help concussion.

I agree. I’m just saying there are plenty of options, he’s one of our best forwards. I don’t know why he’s sitting in the press box.

by Josh Owen on Jan 23, 2012 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

Sounds like its part of the plan Howson put together with Arniel at the beginning of the season to healthy scratch him every once in a while for whatever reason.Looks like its continued down to Richards now. Probably looking for consistency and it might help him watch the game from a different view
I have no problem with it if its going to help his development and its at the right time, but i would have liked to see him in there today considering he scored 2 goals against them last game.

by cbjfan14 on Jan 23, 2012 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Why do we constantly let Weber shoot? I say it every game, we just give Weber too much time and it comes back to bite us every time. DO NOT LET HIM SHOOT. We let Chara do the same thing.

Just put someone out there deeper so the pass isnt available. If hes not open, he cant shoot. Maybe putting Nash out there with the big stick out help so he can cover Weber and the middle at the same time. But all their offense comes from their blue line, you have to take that away from them in any way possible.

by cbjfan14 on Jan 23, 2012 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

spread yourself too thin on the PK and you get burned with cross-ice passes…like the one they pulled off Thurs where they fed Fisher on the backdoor for the easy goal.

by Josh Owen on Jan 23, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Your not spreading too thin. You simply throw the one player up on Weber. It doesnt matter if Suter shoots. His shot isnt any better than most defensemen. Your defense obviously has to make the adjustment and throw the far defensemen up just a little to cover the slot, but it can be done. I woudl rather give someone else a little extra space then Weber.

by cbjfan14 on Jan 23, 2012 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Suter is a better puck mover though. You pay extra attention to Weber, and you will neglect someone else.

by Josh Owen on Jan 23, 2012 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

Right. You dont have to be as worried about a Suter shot. He prefers the pass. But Weber will shoot every chance he gets. You gotta throw someone up there even if it makes another player a little vulnerable. His shot is too dangerous.

Why is it that the known Jackets killers - Fisher, Weber, Legwand etc etc - never get any extra attention?

They never get doubled up, never get knocked off of the puck…always plenty of time and space to continue to brutalize the CBJ. I don’t get it.

Its a shame its looking like were never going to get to see what Mason looks like with an NHL caliber defensive group in front of him. A goalie having confidence in defense and likewise goes a long way. Have to have a good relationship

by cbjfan14 on Jan 23, 2012 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely. It’s a two-way street out there. Mason has show flashes and has loads of physical talent (quickness, size), but he can’t get his head in gear. While he may never be a true top-tier goalie in the NHL, the Jackets sure haven’t given him the support needed to get his brain together. (Which is not to say that Mason is good this season. He most certainly isn’t)

Agreed

His time in Columbus is over. If the rumors are true, and the Lightning are really interested, then hopefully we get something of value in return and he gets a change of scenery. The team doesn’t have confidence in him anymore, it’s unfortunate.

I’d definitely rather him go to the East, I would hate to wind up playing against the goalie he has the potential to be on a regular basis.

I was a Mason adovacte for the longest time, I’ve met him a handful of times, he’s a really nice guy, its hard for me to not like him…but he’s not the answer here. Trade him, get something in return, and move on.

by Josh Owen on Jan 23, 2012 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldnt take that whole Lightning thing too far, that was more of me throwing out an idea of someone who might be interested. They had a scout at the last home game, so that fueled the fire a little bit.
