Opponents Blog: On the Forecheck
For real. I can't remember a time where the Jackets had this many injuries, all of which seem to have come from freak accidents or dirty hits. The good news is that Porty is reporting that Nikita Nikitin's knee injury doesn't appear to be serious (which, if you watch the hit, holy crap did he get lucky). That said, here's the Jackets' injury list for tonight's game:
C Derek MacKenzie (illness), probable); D James Wisniewski (left ankle), D Radek Martinek (concussion), D Nikita Nikitin (left knee), LW Kristian Huselius (groin), C Mark Letestu (right hand) and C Jeff Carter (right shoulder), out; RW R.J. Umberger (concussion, questionable
Yikes. It should be noted that the CBJ did activate Umberger from IR this morning, and also recalled Dane Byers. Given MacKenzie's illness, it wouldn't surprise me to see some shuffling of the lines below.
The Predators appear to be getting Ryan Suter back on defense. The OTF guys speculate as to whether goalie Anders Lindback might get the start tonight for Nashville, given that the Preds have another big tilt with Chicago tomorrow.
This is the Jackets' last meeting with Nasvhille this season, which is kind of nice when you think about it. Odd that it's in late-January, but dem's da breaks.
And [drumroll] finally, tonight should mark the debut of Brett Lebda. Porty has him drawing in on the top pairing with Fedor Tyutin. Kill me now.
[update] Shawn Mitchell is reporting that Steve Mason is starting tonight in goal.

Game Notes:
- Score Goals - Call it a cop out if you will, but this is my note for tonight's game. Score a goal, will ya?
The Jackets are literally limping to the All Star Break, though some relief should be coming after the time off. Umberger is close, Nikitin may not be hurt that badly, and then the trade deadline will be the hot topic of conversation. In the meantime, let's hang around tonight, and maybe give the red-hot Preds a nice big shit-burger to eat. Yeah, I went with "Major League". Enjoy the game!

At this point, does it really matter who they plug in? One warm body is as good (or bad) as another warm body. If the CBJ only manage 1 or 2 goals for it isn’t going to matter.
Maybe Lebda will play like a man with something to prove…
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
It’s more a commentary on the state of our team. If you’d told me back in September that we’d be sitting in 30th and dressing Brett Lebda as a top-pairing defenseman, I’d have wanted to shoot myself in the nuts.

I agree 100%. sigh.

So what IS Lebda’s deal anyways? All I saw was an influx of Toronto fans invading the game thread to make fun of CBJ for even signing the guy off waivers. Did he kill Don Cherry’s kid or something?
I dont understand the point of throwing Umby in so soon tonight after a concussion. Why not just play it safe and wait until after the break? Concussions are tricky, and there is no reason to throw Umby into harm so soon while sitting in 30th place

I feel the same way.

I think another haedline from this AM adds to this point
I read the headline (but not the story) that Umby tried to hide his concussion symptoms so he could play. That is really stupid on Umby’s part. But that should be more evidence that the team shelves him for a bit longer. Is he telling the truth about is symptoms now?
I used to work with brain injured adults and I worked with a guy who was a football player in college and had a stroke or aneurism after taking a hit to the head after a concussion. He will live the rest of his life in a group home.
I’m so excited to see Lebda out there for big minutes while Mason is in net?
I’m going to watch the game, but I’m wondering exactly how well I’ll be able to stomach this, especially against Nashville…
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
Lebda
so this guy couldn’t even sniff the Preds roster yet he’s automatically a top D-line guy in Columbus?
He's a warm body/stop-gap at best
Between the fact that three of our would-be six defensemen (Nikitin, Wisniewski, and Martinek) are all injured, and the “next” guys in the AHL are apparently deemed “not ready” enough to play on a last-place team going nowhere. We was in the AHL on a PTO up until he got signed to Columbus.

Lebda as top d-man, Mason in net...
…i thought that when teams were losing on purpose to get a good draft pick, they were at least supposed to pretend that they were trying to win.

As bad as he is, I guess we can’t really complain…all these injuries put the team in this position. I would rather have a washed-up…well, he arguably was never that good, but that’s another topic. I would rather have Lebda in there making bad passes and turnovers than David Savard, or a prospect that has a bright future but just isn’t ready yet. Early frustrations can destroy confidence in a young player.
As for Mason…his ship has sailed out of Columbus a long time ago. The rumor was that his last start was in front of scouts from the Tampa Bay Lightning…maybe this is the case, and the team is trying to build a little trade value in him. If he starts again tomorrow night, I’d say it would be a pretty clear indication that he’s being shopped.
