Game 45 Game Thread: Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets vs. Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers come calling tonight, and they might be almost as banged up as the Blue Jackets. Missing for Edmonton are all of the following:

C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (shoulder), RW Jordan Eberle (knee), D Ryan Whitney (ankle), D Tom Gilbert (knee), D Cam Barker (ankle), D Taylor Fedun (leg), D Alex Plante (head)

Obviously, the top three are the biggest, but also note that there are a LOT of defensemen missing from a team that has had a hard time on defense in recent years. In other words, tonight's game could be interesting. The Oilers notoriously find ways to score repeatedly on Columbus, and now Columbus may have a better-than-average chance to return the favor. There's also a bit of firepower out of the lineup for Edmonton up front, as well.

So, the Jackets will need to punish them early and often. Columbus is coming off of two straight games of pretty solid work at home. They let up a bit in the third period of Friday's win against Phoenix, but still controlled the play for 40 good minutes and managed to hold on. Against San Jose, they played a solid 60, and just got unlucky.

Hopefully the trend of effort can continue tonight, and the result can get back on the positive side.

Taylor Hall took a nasty cut during warmups (fell and a teammate’s skate cut him around his left eye). Now there are massively conflicting reports on Twitter – some CBJ and Edmonton media say he’s going to be back for the game, others saying he’s at a hospital for observation. Either way, it didn’t sound at all pleasant and hopefully he’s alright.

Brassard looking fairly dominant bringing the puck into the zone and dangling around. He’s got speed and control right now, and that kind of zone entrance is much preferred to the dump-and-not-chase.

Good opportunity between Pahlsson and Ryan Russell as they rush down the ice. Next shift has Brass patiently waiting to feed Nash. Good stuff thus far.

Speed and transition vs the Oil bites Columbus (of course). Anton Lander scores and the Jackets are playing from behind.

Wow. Jackets defense/forwards miss the check down low, Sanford looks oblivious to the whole play and the Oilers are up 2-0 just 9 minutes in. Jackets wisely call a timeout before this gets stupid.

And another one for the Oilers. Wy do we suck so much when we play these guys? Even more than against other teams.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 7:20 PM EST reply actions

We don’t do well in this free flowing style of games. It really shows that we lack in speed and skill and that our defense can’t handle it.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 7:24 PM EST reply actions

There is way too much separation between the d-men and fowards right now which is a bad sign. Too much space for the Oilers to exploit.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Good play by Savard to save a goal. Sanford looking pretty shaky tonight.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 7:30 PM EST reply actions

Much better play by the Jackets now. The cycle game is the key to breaking these guys down.

The “enhanced replay” video of Hall getting the skate to the face is pretty brutal looking. They say he’s going to be alright, but I sure hope he’s actually going to be okay. Oilers announce he won’t be returning tonight.

Right after the Oiler powerplay ends, Dorse and Johansen keep the puck down low and a quick change gets strong Brass/Nash chances at the net. Brass and Nash look very good together.

i’ve got to say that i’ve really liked brassard’s physical / defensive play over the last month or so. i’ve actually noticed him more and more in the defensive zone (and not for the wrong reasons).

seeing him take the body twice on chara in the boston game was great.

by burrows! on Jan 17, 2012 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I like the Brass/Nash chemistry. I think that it will take a while for this team to learn to really pass the puck again, after having to do the “dump and chase” and “stupid shooting” for so long. It seems that Richards will let them play, so that’s good, and it’s already looking somewhat promising. Sure we still need more talent on this team, especially on defense and goaltending, but coaching may be half the battle.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with pretty much everything here. Good coaching can make a team more than the sum of its parts unlike this year’s CBJ. Ideally the Jackets can succeed with some variation on this year’s lineup – they do have good offensive talent in place after all. Maybe it will reach its full potential under a new system.

Sanford really has a great glove hand unlike Mason. He started out shaky this game, but looks much better now.

He’s been on fire since the coaching change. Starting to look like the 1st line center we all hoped he would be

by Josh Owen on Jan 17, 2012 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Brass is really working hard and is looking like a solid second line center if not a first line center. I think this guy has been pretty hampered by Arniel and Hitch, but I guess that’s pretty obvious. Let’s hope he is not just playing well from the excitement of being rid of Arniel and that he continous to get better. This guy is still very young and could still turn out to be a very valuable piece of this team. It just seems to me that he needs to be allowed to play his game.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

The cycle is really starting to work for the Jackets. I am so impressed by Johansen and Kubalik on the cycle, which is difficult for young guys to do well. Two big bodies with talented hands are hard to come by, so i hope they continue to get better.

way to go dmac!

he may not score a lot, but he sure busts his ass

by burrows! on Jan 17, 2012 8:54 PM EST reply actions

That he does. Always plays with energy, never takes a shift off. That goal was all hustle, just skating hard, got to the right spot at the right time.

just think

how good this team might be if they had 19 other people doing the same thing every night…

Kubalik and Johansen had some nice give-and-go happening around the Oilers’ net. Quite nearly a 2 goal lead after a good Johansen shot toward the net.

The Jackets are continuing to keep up the quick backcheck (after the goals against). It’s a good thing – while more conservative on pinching and play in the offensive zone, it has helped to keep the speedy Oilers from getting the same fast-breaks they had earlier in the game.

Other than the first ten minutes they have played well. I really think that John Moore’s speed has helped out a lot tonight. When this kid gets the confidence to play some offense he will be really good.

so

i’m streaming the edmonton feed right now since i live in cleveland and the cavs are blacking out the game…

i’m not sure if it’s been a gradual decline or if i just hadn’t realized it before, but rimer just sounds bored while calling games lately. once every handful of games something manages to get him back into it for a couple of seconds, but i’ve watched a jacket all alone on a breakaway and he sounds totally apathetic.

granted, there hasn’t been a lot to be excited about this year, but edmonton’s been in the same boat for a while now and their announcers manage to keep up excitement and avoid getting so immersed in irrelevant stories that they miss goals.

does anyone else notice it or is this season just slowly driving me crazy?

by burrows! on Jan 17, 2012 9:19 PM EST reply actions

I am not typically one to complain about the announcers, but you are totally right about Rimer. He does that all the time. Sometimes I have no idea what he is talking about.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree and I wish he were more of a homer. Not to the extent of a Jack Edwards (that would be just obnoxious), but something more. I mean, he’s broadcasting to Fox Sports Ohio. Should be easy on a regional broadcast to say better things about the Jackets.

baby steps

the season’s pretty much lost, but hopefully they can use it to start learning from the ground up

by burrows! on Jan 17, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ever since the 2-0 goal when Richards took a timeout, they played a really good game. Maybe this guy know how to coach. Let’s hope so.

…or maybe Arniel was just that bad.

by Josh Owen on Jan 17, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

How about Johansen-Carter-Kubalik when Carter gets healthy. And Vermette and RJ on the third line. Could be pretty nice.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

i agree, i like the 1st line the way it is now

obviously carter and nash dont play well together, so break em up, let them both be volume shooters on their line. though soon it could be johanson/carter/hueslus?

by Berecki on Jan 17, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I hope they don’t rush Juice too soon this time. I know we need to put him out there for potential byers to see that he is okay, but the man’s career is on the line. Give him proper time to heal, and give the kids a chance to play.

by Ville A on Jan 17, 2012 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

same with umberger. he’s way more valuable to the team at 100 % than he is at 80%.

side note: i can’t count how many times i’ve forgotten that radek martinek is on this team.

by burrows! on Jan 17, 2012 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Martinek is the perfect example of why Umby needs to heal properly. Head injuries are tricky and we have seen what coming back too soon can do to a player’s career.
