CBJ Goaltending: The (Dex)Show Must Go On
Many words have been written about the charismatic Dekanich since he signed a free agent deal with the Blue Jackets last July. Given most fans concerns in regards to Steve Mason, Blue Jackets Nation was hopeful that Dex might not only be a capable backup to Mason, but maybe, just maybe could wrest the #1 job from him.
About a week ago, I was convinced that the goaltending for the remainder of the season would likely continue with Mason/Sanford in Columbus and Manny Legace teaming with Dekanich for the Falcons.
Then Jeff Rimer said something.
During the game at United Center last Tuesday, he mentioned that Dekanich had finally gotten to play for the Falcons. Then he added, in an almost offhand manner, that Dex would get some more work in Springfield, but would be up with the Jackets soon.
I'll admit, that surprised me. In a season of dashed hopes, injuries and suspensions, I didn't think there would be yet another spin of the goalie roulette wheel. Rimer spoke as confidently as if he were carrying that information etched onto stone tablets and coming down the mountainside with it. Which got me to thinking...
By the trade deadline, Mase is as good as gone. Maybe so, but the problem there is that second year of his current two year contract, calling for $3.2 million next year and a cap hit of $2.9 million. I have a hard time wrapping my head around any club willing to shell out that kind of money for the former Rookie of the Year. If there are no suitors based on the need for Mase alone, it's more likely that he'll be an extra to a more relevant player in trade. Who that might be really would be anybody's guess. And, if all else fails, it wouldn't surprise me to see Mase make it to the end of the season and simply get bought out.
Option B could see Curtis Sanford dealt elsewhere, opening up a spot for Dex to finally play with the Jackets. Sanford, with 130 NHL games and another 248 at the AHL level, to his credit, has re-established himself as an NHL goaltender. Not a #1 per se, but a reliable veteran presence who in 21 games for a wretched Blue Jackets lineup has performed very well. As of Friday, Sanford's 7-9-0-3 record is easily overshadowed by a goals against of 2.59 and a .911 save percentage.
The guy hurt most by this season of injury has been Allen York. York, like Cam Atkinson, finished up last season with the Falcons. York, quite frankly, was great in the last couple weeks of a lost season in Springfield. Although it seems like an eternity ago, York was originally pencilled in as the #2 guy in Springy this season, behind Sanford. Instead, York has racked up thousands of miles in trips to Columbus, Springfield and Chicago. Several times and back again.
I mentioned in the recap from Friday night's Falcons game that Dekanich has played in only three games since last March 16th. What I feel is one of his strengths, is his ability to read a play as it's happening. His positioning is solid. His fundamentals are strong. He has made a handful of great saves. His downfall has been, if it can be called that, that he's been beaten for some goals that he should have had. Slightly out of position, maybe not getting a good view of the puck contribute to that. All in all, it's simply some rust on his game. Believe me, I strongly believe Dekanich is the real deal. It's just a matter of him getting and staying healthy, and getting in some games to get his game back to where he needs it to be.
Which brings us back to the question of what happens in the Jackets and Falcons goals the rest of the way? For my way of thinking, Sanford and Dekanich in Columbus with Legace and York in Springfield would work out just fine. I don't think it'll be that easy however. It may turn out as Mason/Dex up top, again with Legace/York in Springfield, with Sanford gone in a deal.
What say you?

I think we will just pull what the Isles are doing (when healthy), with a three goalie rotation.
I could also see us giving a conditional stint for Mason in Springy for as long as he allows while Dex and Sanford run the show up here for a little while.

I have long claimed (meaning for this season) that I think Steve Mason would benefit from extended time in Springfield. I think his cap hit would make it possible to clear waivers. I don’t know how likely, but possible. Giving him time to work out his game while staying out of focus of pressure or spotlight would be huge for him and a chance to build his confidence would be another big plus.
Think of it like sending Cliff Lee down to the minors. Some guys just need to refocus, but it is hard to do that when the team is relying on you.
As an Indians fan getting into hocke, this is how I looked at it at first, too. The problem with the Cliff Lee comparison is the “re-entry waivers” of the NHL. If Mason clears waivers and goes down (which is likely) and then finds his way and turns it around in the AHL, he has to clear re-entry waivers if he’s down any length of time where any team can claim him (for half his cap hit, or something like that?)
Good Info
This report is why I think “the cannon” is tops.every fan should be EXTREMELY interested in how Dex is doing. Dispatch hardly mentions the fact he played. Believe you reported he is in Chicago and record so far is pretty good.
Mason, at this point, and in my opinion, is long past an AHL stint having any sort of effect. If the team was even contemplating that, it would have happened as he sludged through his first year after winning the Calder…at the very latest, last year.
If the team is looking to win, they will unload Mason for a proven #1 goaltender. We’ve constantly gotten rid of solid backups while giving Mason more than enough time to improve his game (why we let Garon go last year is beyond me…I would hope we wouldn’t do the same to the Sandman). Just remember that he has a 14 day limit down in the minors, or else he’d have to clear waivers. As poor as he’s been for us lately, I still think he holds at least a LITTLE value, and I’d hate to see him go for nothing.
I just hope Dex can get back to where he was. I was really confident that he’d be solid in between the pipes for us earlier on in the season, and I’m just hoping the injuries haven’t taken a permanent toll on his game. There’s nothing to suggest that’s been the case, but you never know…there’s a long list of players that have had NHL dreams derailed because of injuries. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I guess if he needs until next season to recuperate, there’s really no real reason we can’t keep Mason until the end of the season…hell, start him even more games down the stretch to ensure the #1 pick. That’s about all we’re playing for at this point.
Mason is done after this season. I would much rather see Sanford and Dex in Columbus next year. We can’t keep patience with Mason anymore. I guess he really is the next Jim Carey.

Looking at potential UFAs...
In the “under 35” crowd, we have Nittymaki, Leighton and Dan Ellis. Nittymaki was in Worcester recently on a conditioning stint. Leighton has been in the “A” all season and Ellis with the Ducks are sitting 29th in the NHL. I’m not too confident that any of them would be the answer to the Jackets dilemma.
The RFA picture is a little more interesting. Names like Price, Rask, Pavelec and Schneider head the list. We might very well see a Wiz-like trade to get somebody here with the hopes that he’ll re-up as a #1 with the Jackets.

Out of those, the only ones i see possible are Scheider. I think Nittymaki would be a good option as he isnt happy in San Jose cause hes not playing enough.
In the free agency marketplace, Schneider would be my #1 choice. I think Nittymaki could get the job done, but I would still prefer Schneider. I don’t see either Price or Rask leaving their clubs, but then again, anything’s possible.

No, Price and Rask arent going anywhere unless they demand to. Schneider would obviously be my number one choice as well, but hes going to cost a hell of a lot more. He would be a great fit here though if we can get him.
The cost
I don’t know If cbus will be willing to give up at the very least a 1st rnd pick not to mention the cost of signing schninedr (they will have to over pay so that Vancouver won’t match any deal) I can’t see schnider here unless he is acquired in a trade and then signed.

The cost of getting a franchise goalie is high. If we had a promising goalie coming up soon i would say dont do it, but im not sure. Something needs to be done, and its not going to be cheap.
If we draft a top goalie this year, we may look in to a filler goalie for a few years until the drafted goalie matures. Harding would be a good choice for that 5-6 year gap until the goalie is ready.
You missed the three best UFA goalies
Josh Harding, Brian Elliott and Al Montoya are all fairly young and better goalies than Nittymaki, Leighton and Ellis.
Thanks Coach
My concerns with them are Harding has never played more than 29 games in an NHL season and there are lingering injury questions. Elliott is having a career year, but prior to this year has been ordinary at best. If he were to come to the Jackets would he have as much protection as he’s afforded on the Blues? Probably not. Similarly, Montoya has had a pretty average career, and has only 42 more games NHL experience than Dekanich.
Whoever ultimately comes to the Jackets is going to need to be able to carry the club in the same manner as a Lundqvist or Thomas is the backbone of their teams.
I like that Allen York and Mathieu Corbeil will be around some day, but it’s just not going to be soon enough.

I agree that those three players have question marks, but they are all younger and having better seasons than the guys you mentioned. Unfortunately, there just aren’t enough Thomas’ and Lundqvist’s around, and definitely not on the free agent market (unless you find the next Tim Thomas). Those three goalies would all be very solid member of a tandem (maybe with each other), and that would be a huge step up from the goaltending the Jackets have gotten this year. You mention the support would be different for Elliott, and that highlights the second major problem for the Jackets defensively: the defense just is not nearly good enough. They have a bunch of guys who are solid, but no one who has ever been a top pairing guy on a good team. Shoring up the defense would go a long way to helping the goaltending problem.
Well Said, Coach!
Your point about the D is especially valid. I’ve been a NYR fan forever and to see the way Lundqvist put the team on his back during a rebuild 3-4 years ago while Dan Girardi and Marc Staal in particular blossomed into premier NHL defensemen was amazing.
The parallel I’d draw would be a phenomenal goalie for the Jackets while Moore, Savard, Goloubef, Prout and Holden mature as pro defensemen. The club has drafted decent defensemen. The lack of support of a goalie who’s capable of carrying a .925 save percentage as the defense matures has been a killer.

Sunday night update
First, thanks for the comments!
A bad day for Dex and the Falcons. Providence 5, Springfield 2.
Dex should have had at least a couple of the goals. The Springfield defense was nowhere to be found for most of the day, allowing the Bruins deep penetration into the Falcons zone, then allowing quality scoring attempts. The fifth Bruins goal was an empty netter.
The whole team effort was pretty flat today…possibly the result of this weekend’s 3 in 3 (the ride back from Portland last night clocked in at over 4 hours)…More tomorrow here at The Cannon.
