Game 42 Game Thread: Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks
No doubt, the buzz surrounding this game for the Blue Jackets is the absence of Scott Arniel. Todd Richards takes over behind the bench, and one wonders if there will be any kind of massive shift in philosophy coming. Even if so, it probably won't be tonight, as the team is playing their fourth straight road game (in six nights, even) and probably hasn't spent a lot of time on the ice tweaking.
In addition, Columbus is without Jeff Carter (separated shoulder). Derick Brassard looks to get first crack at centering the top line, but Richards has noted that he's not guaranteeing Brass will be there the whole game. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The Blackhawks haven't been setting the world on fire themselves, seeing their division and conference lead evaporate during a 1-4-1 stretch. They now sit third behind Detroit and St. Louis in the Central, and will now be without Patrick Sharp for three to four weeks. Nonetheless, the Hawks have outscored the Jackets 15-6 in the three previous matchups. Good times.
Enjoy the game to the best of your collective ability.

Hidy-Ho everyone. Sorry I’ve been MIA for a while.
Want to get my thoughts on the firing out of the way, but the other thread is buried. I think it was about time. It wasn’t all his fault, but this team has talent. Someone outlined it earlier in the season, but they were doing a lot of things that indicated they were playing his system correctly. There was a lot of proven talent on this team. Maybe not even a playoff team, but they shouldn’t be having this much trouble scoring. Arniel wasn’t getting the job done.

Boy there’s some weird lighting in Chicago’s rink. Looked weird on NBCSN when the Hawks played the Wings too.

Uh-oh. Big bomb from the point (from a Chicago player) beans Toews in the back of the head. Hit the helmet, but still looked painful and he’s off to the locker room.

Johansen-Vermette-Kubalik line seemingly doing okay out there for now. Johansen had a wrap-around chance earlier and the last shift resulted in a few shots too. Although their action in the defensive zone left something to be desired…

I’ll have to re-find the article, but I was reading today that Nash had much better powerplay stats when he was near/in front of the net, whereas he’s playing along the half boards right now. It would be nice to see that switch back with new coaching.

Toews is back out there – good news for him that he’s doing well. Obviously not good in a hockey way for the Jackets, but generally humanity matters more. So it’s good to see him back.

Random double-minor against Chicago with that fight. Instigator + unsportsmanlike conduct. Sure, whatever!

Nice job by Boll. He literally could have destroyed Montador at one point and Montador knew it
Sucks that NHL has turned to a fight after a clean hit. Dont like those kinds of fights. Fights where players are really pissed at each other are much better.
Holy cow how did that puck not go in?

Boy Brass just about made a mess of that

hey everybody,
i’ve had to listen online since i live in cleveland and the cavs are playing.
i know it’s hard to judge, but how have the jackets looked? demeanor-wise, i mean. from the comments they made before the game, the team seemed legitimately bummed out about the arniel situation, although they may have just been reciting canned statements too.

STILL BELIEVE COLUMBUS
Sanford made some quality stops in the first period although he only saw 5 shots. However, I don’t see that any of the other Jackets players are making plays with any purpose and they are not skating nearly as hard as the Hawks. I don’t know if this is a lack of confidence or mental fatigue from the last 24 hrs, but I find it difficult to watch. I know we have a lot of injuries, and at least the younger guys are trying to make some plays, but what about everyone else? Again, they all appear to be waiting for someone else to do something. Maybe this sounds overly negative after a 0-0 period against a great team but I just don’t like the vibe at all. It looks like a cultural desease – like they have all cought the CBJ virus. As much as I hate to admit it, maybe this roster does need a complete makeover. It is especially evident when you watch guys like Toews flying around like this is a playoff game. He just can’t stand loosing and I don’t see that with any of our guys.
Keep in mind the roster for this game tonight. No Carter, Wiz, Letestu, etc. But i do think we need a partial makeover. Bottom six, goalies, and defense would be nice.
This has generally been my view, and I think it still is, but I worry that the core of the team may also be the problem – yes that includes Nash. Not so much talent wise, but culturally, even though I know that is a vague term without much substance. It’s more of a gut feeling that I have I guess. I just think it would be really hard to go through another partial re-build just to have the same thing happen all over again. On the other hand I certainly don’t want to nuke the team unless it’s absolutely necessary. Tough call!
if pahlsson gets traded this year, i would love to see them give mackenzie a shot at the third line center spot between dorsett and either umberger or letestu.
dude gives it everything he’s got every shift and i really think he could step up and become a good shut-down center.
say what you will about plus/minus being a flawed stat, but anybody that’s a +8 after a season like this has got to be doing something right.
Boll is apparently pretty good at drawing instigator penalties tonight. So that’s nice.

Meet the new Jackets, same as the old Jackets – short-handed goal for the Hawks.

i think that, if the system being used has really been a problem for this team, it’s going to be pretty hard to fix it in one game, especially in the middle of a road trip.
really, as a new coach in the middle of the season, his options are pretty limited tonight – one practice with a team still potentially reeling from the change and the opportunity to set his own line combinations & decide who gets on the ice and at what time.
they might have had a little time to make some minor tweaks to their system during that practice (i’m assuming a good chunk of it would have been spent meeting with the team instead of skating) but i really don’t see much of an opportunity to do any major surgery until they get a couple of days of practice at home.
don’t get me wrong, i’m nowhere near any sort of analyst. add 30 years of being surrounded by cleveland’s “professional” sports teams and my view of a “successful” pro sports team is probably pretty distorted.
I wholeheartedly agree, and it’s silly to think that anything will be very different today. Perhaps Friday and Saturday we’ll see a slightly different game out of the Jackets. But I couldn’t resist The Who reference in a rather pitiful looking play.

Say what you will about RJ’s regressed play this season, but that man fights and always seems to be in a good position to score. Great to Johansen’s vision at play with other skilled players.
Nice chances on the Brass-Nash-Prospal line. I like it.

Another good shift by our new first line. Nash and Brass seem to have pretty good chemistry. With that said, they are no match for the Hawks top line. Is there a better top six in the league? And they are playing without Sharp who is out with an injury. Pretty fun to watch even though I hate when they beat up on the Jackets.
I’m really not a big fan of Stalberg.

Doesn’t Columbus already have enough Jacket killers as it is?

around 19-20 a game, depending on who starts in net.

Bet there are more hats tonight than in Anaheim, Hes a killer. No one hustled back other than Savard.

Glad we all talk shit about Mase, but looks like it doesnt matter who is in net to me.
Just sayin’
Subjectively, the team didn’t look as down-and-out as they have with Mason in. But your point is totally valid – neither goalie is all that good. Hard to win when you’re playing from behind constantly. I guess we can just hope that Dex is “reasonable” and then hope again that the Jackets get a real goalie before next season starts.

Well with Sanford, you know what you’re getting: A career backup who hadn’t played at this level in the two years prior to this season.
The problem is, we’re getting AHL-caliber play from Mason, too…only we’re paying him a hell of a lot more to suck. And Sanford STILL has better stats.
