Today in the "A": Passing of a Local Legend

I never met Jack "Red" Coughlin, although I'm sure he passed through Springfield more than once in his storied career. Having just found about Red's passing at age 91, now I regret never having met him.

You're perhaps wondering why any of this is relevant.

I'm sure that some of you have heard of Red.

Red was an equipment manager and trainer for approximately 60 years in Syracuse, NY. Sean Kirst of the Syracuse Post-Standard wrote a wonderful tribute to commemorate Coughlin's passing on Tuesday.

His last official game with the Crunch was April 10, 2010, when he was 90. That may have provided Red with the distinction he always wanted: He dreamed of being the oldest equipment man and trainer in pro hockey, if not all professional sports.

There you have the relevance. Coughlin's last game with the Syracuse Crunch came as the Blue Jackets were finishing up their affiliation with Syracuse, prior to coming to Springfield.

On the off chance that you might be in the area, Red's calling hours and service are this morning:

Goodbye to "Red:" Calling hours for legendary athletic trainer Jack "Red" Coughlin will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave., Onondaga. They will be followed by a service.

Rest in peace, Red.
