Jackets make 8 more cuts
With Springfield's camp set to open tomorrow, the Jackets have made 8 more cuts, 5 of them for Springfield and three players being released from tryout agreements.
Oliver Gabriel, Anton Blomqvist, Steven Delisle, Dalton Prout, and Brent Regner have all been assigned to the Falcons. Gabriel had the option to return to Portland as an overager, but it would seem he's chosen to begin his professional career.
Aaron Bogosian, who is signed to a contract with the Falcons but attended Jackets' camp, has been cut and is expected to return to Springfield, while Traverse City invitee Adam Payerl has been released and will return to Belleville of the OHL, and ATO invitee Trevor Ludwig has also been cut.
This brings the Jackets' training camp roster down to 40 players, including three injured players - expect another 10-15 cuts over the course of next week, and any players unable to go for opening night to be placed on the IR list. It wouldn't surprise me to see additional cuts after the game against Buffalo tomorrow night and Washington on Monday, allowing the final two games vs. Minnesota and Carolina to be "tune ups" for the opening night roster.

While I’m thinking about it – anyone a little surprised to see Paul Dainton still in camp? Even with the injury to Dex I’m surprised that he wasn’t sent down yet.

He looked good in his two periods after Dex got hurt. Hope he gets another chance to at least show what hes made of after that.
But yes, im surprised. Seems like he is odd man out no matter what.
I’m thinking as long as the Jackets skate 2 practice groups, they’ll want an even number of goalies, although that ends shortly. Dainton has already signed an AHL contract with the Falcons, so staying in C-bus gives him more ice time until Falcons camp really gets going. The two guys in net in Falcons camp won’t be around long once Dainton/York/Sanford/Dex (on a rehab assigment?) come this way.

Blomqvist
I’m curious/excited to see how Blomqvist plays once he gets healthy in Springfield. I liked what I saw out of him in Dev Camp and was hoping to see him in training camp, but the blasted groin injury…

"I will say anything to be funny, often in the most horrible situations, which is one reason [a] good [woman] so far [has] been very sorry on occasion to have married me." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
So Gabriel is playing for the Falcons this year. Was it his choice to go to Springfield instead or the teams? Seems like another year in Portland might have been good for him. And Blomqvist played in Sweden last year, correct? Is it same thing for him just best for development to put in Springfield?
Doesnt really matter but Bogosian is a forward i believe.
I actually think Falcons was the better option – going to Portland as an overager would potentially have been less of a challenge.
Blomqvist coming to North America is good because it gets him used to the American style of game.

Gabriel had the season ending injury last year in Portland so i dont think it would have been a bad thing for him to go back there and see what he can do. Its not a bad thing at all sending him to Springfield either. I was just curious if it was the team that decided for him to go to Springfield or if it was his choice. If he wanted to play in Springfield but the team wanted him to play in Portland, where would he play?
Competely agree on Blomqvist. It was definately time for him to come over here and get up to speed. Seems like he needs to grow into his big frame and he could be a good player.
Gabriel and Blomqvist should really benefit from the players still to be sent down by the Jackets. There will be a strong supporting cast that should really enhance both of their seasons.

In the past, these kind of decisions are usually made by the team, but the respect the player’s wishes – a good example would be Matt Calvert, who the team wanted to go pro year before last, but Calvert asked to return to Juniors so he could play in the memorial cup, which they supported.

Paul Dainton
Paul is a excellent goalie ,I hope he gets another chance to show what he can do . I seen him play in OJHL ,and I was wondering why wasn’t this kid playing in the OHL ?
4 seasons in NCAA was the reason I guess.
He will play in Springfield this season though.
Paul was a reliable goalie for UMass-Amherst the past four seasons. His biggest obstacles to playing in Springfield are named Sanford and York. The wild card is the injury to Dex, which could shake things up a little.
