Today in the "A": Weekend Roundup

While the NHL Entry Draft garnered the puck headlines over the weekend, it was a busy weekend around the American Hockey League as well.

First, on Friday the AHL Board of Governors gave their unanimous approval to the sale of the Rochester Americans to Terry Pegula and the Buffalo Sabres.

The Amerks were the Sabres top farm club from 1979-2008. During those 29 seasons, Rochester made the Calder Cup Finals nine times, winning three (1983, 1987 and 1996). They were defeated in the finals in 1990 and 1991 by the Springfield Indians.

Closer to home, the Providence Bruins named a new head coach on Saturday. Bruce Cassidy, who has been the Baby B's assistant coach for the past three seasons takes the helm from former Springfield Falcon, Rob Murray. The B's, like the Falcons, missed the playoffs this past season.

Next, with the Sabres realigning with Rochester, the annual franchise affiliation merry-go-round gets underway. John Bartlett tweeted on Friday:

The Chicago Wolves are expected to announce their new NHL affiliation during a press conference on Monday.

Also, sourced by several including Bob McKenzie, longtime Canadiens assistant coach, Kirk Muller is expected to be announced as the new head coach for the Milwaukee Admirals (Nashville Predators) today.

Finally, Jackets fans take notice. Aaron Portzline had a Twitter-fest last night. His last question addressed the Mike Commodore situation:

@3ggi3 queried: Any chance Commodore might get back into a game or two if still here?

Porty's reply: Not a chance. Bridge burned, both directions.
