Lepisto came to Columbus at the trade deadline from Phoenix along with forward Scottie Upshall in exchange for defenseman Rostislav Klesla. After the trade, Lepisto played 19 games for Columbus, notching five assists with a +3 rating. Should he stay, or should he go?
What's He Worth?
Lepisto came to Columbus with a reputation of being a solid puck-moving defenseman, perhaps a slightly bigger Kris Russell who doesn't skate quite as well. It took a few games for him to get adjusted, but in all honestly once he got integrated in Columbus he wasn't horrible. His +3 rating in the face of a limp to the season's finish line indicates he isn't irresponsible in his own zone. We didn't see much in the way of offense, but toward the end of the season he contributed a little, with his five assists in the final 12 games. It must be said, however, that three of those came in one game.
Lepisto turns 27 in October, so it's fair to say he's entering what would be considered his prime. So, the argument is: if Lepisto is cheap, is it worth it to keep him, or will he be redundant on a new-look blue line?
In terms of offensive production, this past season Lepisto compared with the likes of Alec Martinez (5/11/16 in 60 games), Derek Morris (5/11/16 in 77 games), Radek Martinek (3/13/16 points in 64 games), Johnny Boychuk (3/13/16 in 69 games), and Ryan Wilson (3/13/16 in 67 games).
In terms of age and experience, Lepisto compares closest to Boychuk (27, one more year, $2 million). I can't see Lepisto getting a raise all the way up to $2 million, but he will certainly jump up from the $800K he made this year.
What Should The CBJ Offer?
Well, I think it's tempting to make the qualifying offer, based on how cheap it is. The problem is, if Lepisto takes it suddenly Columbus is flush with defensemen they were supposedly getting rid of to "overhaul" the position.
If I'm setting his value, though, I split the different between the qualifying offer and Boychuk's salary, and say it should be in the neighborhood of $1.4 million per year for two years. I don't dislike Lepisto the player, but given the Jackets' need and desire to really add some top-shelf talent to their blue line, I think you have to let him walk.

I’m kind of in “Yes, but…” territory. I thought that Lepisto did well with what he was given, and had some decent potential.
I think that if the Jackets move some pieces as part of improving the blue line, he could still be a decent middle or bottom pairing guy with potential to move up if he keeps improving, but I’m not sold on just re-signing him and counting on that.

That’s my issue. I don’t dislike him as a player, and think he can bring some things to the table. But, not at the expense of going after some top-tier talent.

I’m sort of here too. I like him as a player, but that blue line is crowded. I think we will see some moves to clear that up a little, and we’ll see where he falls in after that.

I fear that my decision is based on emotions rather than facts because I feel that I need to see us keep someone from the Klesla trade in order to make the trade worthwhile, but I would keep Lepisto.
I think keeping someone who only played 19 games for you can still count as part of an overhaul. I don’t think those 19 games allows him to be mixed in with the Mike Commodore types who created the D problem over the last 2 seasons.
Going +3 in those 19 terrible games (most of which we lost) actually may be a miracle. In the same timeframe, Upshall was what, -13? Furthermore, extrapolate those 5 assists in 19 games (which is admittedly pretty unfair), and over the course of the season, that’s about 25-30 points.
I think with a full off-season of CBJ system and coaching, he can become a real asset to our D corps in the 5-7 range. As been said many times now, however, we MUST get a real #1 or #2 defenseman in order for our D to improve. In the event that no solid D-man can come in, I will stab Scott Howson we’ll need help creating the depth we need at D, and Lepisto seems like a high-upside guy worth taking a flier on.
He would be a last piece type. Keep him depending on other moves. If Russell goes in a trade then keep him. Decision on him comes after whatever else is going be done gets done.. Strictly seviceable 5-6-7 guy.
I would rather have Lepisto than Russell. I think we all need to stop pretending Russell is some kind of prospect. He’s barely younger than Stralman, and he’s never really been anything but bad at the NHL level.

The more I read these comments, the more I think I should have qualified the poll question a bit more. I wonder how many “no” votes are actually “no, unless some space is cleared up by other guys moving and he’s not asked to do too much.”

Bring him back! Straight up, he has a solid first pass from the defensive zone, and regardless of how crowded our blue line is already, we need more puck moving defensemen who can get on the scoreboard. Not only does he have potential, he is a decent player already.
It would be a mistake not to make an offer as an RFA, especially given the rise in the cap to 64$ (which is a ridiculous number, admittedly, for columbus management to every achieve given our financial situation).
This is a must. He has the potential to be the best offensive defenseman we always dreamed of.
Adam Foote still blows!
This may be a little overboard.

Well, compared to all the good offensive defensman we have ever had, this could be true lol. Other than Spacek, all the rest have been average at best.

I think Hainsey was pretty good. Also, you may be right about him being one of our better offensive defensemen, that wasn’t really what I meant. I just meant I can dream a little bigger than that.

Lepisto could be good, but he’s what, 27? If he were going to be a top pairing guy we’d know by now.

I don’t think there’s any serious reason to not sign Lepisto unless it involves making room for a top 3 forward or a top 2 d-man. And even there, I’d still want to see Lepisto around if he wasn’t involved in a trade. There aren’t many negatives about his game, and most of his “bad” play when with the Jackets can be attributed to needing time to adjust to a new system. He’s only 26 and still has upside. I’d love to see him back with Columbus next year.

I would definitely want him over anyone on our blue line not named Tyutin or Methot.

He should go. Would love to fill his roster spot with Andy Greene or James Wisniewki. lepisto is OK…but need better.
I’m thinking we keep Clitsome, Methot, bring in 2 UFAs and hopefully trade Tyutin in package for another established blueliner…say, Phoenix can’t sign Yandle, why not the 8th pick, Tyutin, and maybe Jake or a top prospect?
I say sign him and send Russell out in a package for a top defensemen that really fits our needs in the 1-2 slot.
This. I really don’t like Russell.
