Andrew Murray is one of a group of NHL players who can say he was drafted in a round that no longer exists. The 8th round pick of the Blue Jackets, 242nd overall, in 2001, he spent four years at Bemidji State, and two and a half years with the Syracuse Crunch, before breaking into the NHL midway through the 2007-2008 season under Ken Hitchcock. Delivering a solid 39 game performance, he was re-signed to a three year deal, but due to a combination of injuries and battling for roster spots with other players in the third / fourth lines, he's yet to play a full 82 game season at the NHL level. Though he seemed to be developing some talent for going to the front of the net in a Tomas Holmstrom style role in addition to his "weighty" checking game, he's the very picture of a tweener in many fan's eyes - probably too talented for the AHL level, but yet to really take off in NHL play.

Star-divide

What's He Worth?

Murray's sophomore season, despite missing 15 games due to minor injuries, was his best in terms of pure point production. As a fourth liner, he's not expected to be a massive offensive contributor, but has provided some unexpected goals on occasion to help inspire the team. The bigger concern, in my eyes, is his defensive ability. While a -6 isn't terrible, particularly on the Jackets' 2009-2010 squad, there's no indication that Murray (or his line) can be consistently able to play against higher tier competition. It says a lot that his only positive defensive season came in a year so shortened by injury - and that injury history is also quickly becoming a concern. At his current salary, Murray is comparable to Detroit's Drew Miller, Ottawa's Ryan Shannon, and Vancouver's Tanner Glass, and his production is comparable to Glass, but less favorable when you consider Miller and Shannon.

What Should The CBJ Offer?

Honestly, I'm not sure they should offer anything at all, and all indications at this point are that they will allow him to go to July 1st - Murray's role was more than adequately filled by Derek MacKenzie or Matt Calvert. At this point, Murray is a "serviceable" option for the fourth line, but the Jackets may also need to open roster spots for Ryan Johansen or the possibility of Tomas Kubalik, for example, cracking the NHL roster. Murray is a "heart and soul" guy who will do anything he can for the team, but his inability to stay healthy is a major issue. If they do make the decision to provide Murray an offer, I'd expect it to be a two way deal, and not much more over his current $625,000 - if anything, he might have to take a pay cut to stay at the NHL level, wherever he should land.

The sarcastic part of me wonders if the two “YES” votes are from Murray and his agent. I think this is the most one sided one of these posts we’ve had yet.

I like to think of Mackenzie as our secret weapon, with Murray being overshadowed. However, I still would like to keep him around for next year because he is still a useful checking forward and many times he is one of the few men trying to make the difference on the ice. I can’t give up on him just yet.

I can respect that, but unfortunately I think Murray is, at this point, a guy whose hands cannot keep up with his heart.

Well, he is a cheap alternative. I’ve always appreciated having him on the ice.

If its a cheap two way deal maybe i would do it. Give Springfield some help and he is more than capable of playing at the NHL level. I dont know if he would do it, but i see that as his only chance.
The way i see it is the emergence of Mckenzie as an NHL player pretty much saw the end of Murray. I would still rather have him than Dorsett but i know im in the minority in that department.

I voted No on the poll, but I’m now I’m thinking a little differently.

If he would’ve stayed healthy last season he was on pace to score around 20 points. (4G, 4A, 4 PIM in 29 GP)

That’s not great, but not too shabby when comparing to other Jackets like Boll – 7G,5A in 73 GP and Dorsett – 4G,13A in 76 GP.

Now, I’m not saying that Murray would definitely be beneficial, I’m just saying that if the price was right, and his spot couldn’t be filled by a better player from another team, I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping him.

One stat I do like is his 4 PIM in 29 games. So, while he wasn’t a scoring “machine”, at least he wasn’t a reason for the opposing team to be on the PP. This I saw on Dorsett too many times during his 184 PIM. (WHY do we never talk of getting rid of him??)

I didnt see this comment before i posted above, but i agree on Dorsett. Hes too small to be an enforcer like Boll and he takes too many stupid penalties. I understand the scrappiness of him, but i dont see it useful in the NHL when your not putting points up. Just look at the playoff teams, no one has a Dorsett. Murray is good on the penalty kill, and doesnt take many penalties. He seems like a solid fourth liner. Hes quick and has size, i would just like him to use it more.

Dorsett is the poor man’s Brad Marchand. I prefer him over Boll. But we need an enforcer too. We need a scrappy guy who can also bust heads.

I still feel like when Boll goes out there trying to score and not just fight, he can put up more points than Dorsett. We also need more size than Dorsett out there so we would need Boll over Dorsett.

Yeah, I can defintely see Boll being more offensive. I would like to replace both if we could.

He has shown some nice little moves every once in a while like a toe drag, but thats only when he goes out looking like he wants to score. Hes actually got a really nice shot if you have ever seen it in a practice.

I wish there was a way to combine the two lol. Jarick Bolset.
