York Goes Pro

A little over a day after highly touted NCAA prospect Cam Atkinson made the decision to leave Boston College to start his pro career with the Blue Jackets, he was joined by another blue chip NCAA player - Allen York, previously of the RPI Engineers.
York, a 6th round selection in the 2007 entry draft, has been given time to develop at RPI, where he turned from being a promising high school prospect to one of the best netminders in Division 1 hockey, positing the best all time GAA among RPI goaltenders, and fourth overall in save percentage.
Each step of the way, York's stats have improved, and the general consensus is that he's got the talent to develop into an excellent professional quality netminder. The big problem is going to be giving him that time to develop - the Jackets' pipeline isn't terribly deep, as we've previously discussed.
For now, York will be assigned to Springfield, where he's likely to get a bit of action given the current flux in goal for the Falcons with David LeNeveau hurt.
In the offseason, it will be interesting to see how this affects the Jackets' relationship with Gustaf Wesslau - the European netminder was on a one year deal, and it's entirely possible that he might look for another option rather than give up playing time for York, who will almost certainly be positioned as the starter for next season.

I’m personally quite pleased to say that I can quite hating York for being a part of RPI. He always managed to play quite well in the ECAC – including twice a year at the expense of Clarkson. Hopefully he can continue developing and turn into a valuable part of the Jackets’ organization.

hooray for a few low picks that actually look promising!
trying to figure out the better canadian, Nash or Votto.
Let’s give credit where due – between Clitsome, York, Calvert, and Kubalik, the organizations had some pretty good results from late round picks the last few years.

Maybe Howson and co. can be thanked for that. We never seemed to have any late round beauties under D mac. Those take a few more years to show than first rounders so maybe that can help. Late round picks that become good are what can make an organization. See Detroit.
Very true, and yes, even if he’s not totally responsible (a lot of the same people are involved), I can’t help but think that his direction has been a big part of that.

The Goalie Guild has a lot of things to say about Allen York, and really likes what he sees in his future with the Blue Jackets. Take a look at what he has to say!

Put charitably, Wesslau has been a complete bust. Perhaps it was the knee injury in camp, but on any given night he has been ordinary at best. Since the first of the year, “ordinary” would have been a great night for him, as he’s been downright awful on most nights. I would be shocked if he’s offered another CBJ contract.

Interesting Lou, I guess that’s why these Euros get one year “let’s see what happens” deals.
I’m excited to see what York can do between now and the end of the AHL season. He and LeNeveu (or another AHL vet) would make a good combo methinks next year.
Another consideraton- if Mathieu Corbeil goes pro, there will be a battle between he and York to see which guy gets time in Springfield and which is sent to Fort Wayne (assuming the Komets are still the Jackets’ AA affiliate).
