With the Jackets claiming Craig Rivet, I was asked to come on over and talk a little bit about what kind of player that you are getting with Rivet. To start, he is a great locker room addition. When he was traded from the San Jose Sharks to the Sabres, the team elected him captain until he was waived this week. He is a good mentor for young defensemen and there never was an issue that we knew about with him in the locker room.
The play on the ice is another story. Rivet has lost a step and was a healthy scratch for most of the Sabres games this season. While he isn't pylon material yet, he is getting close. As a third line defenseman, he should be serviceable for 10 minutes a night, but don't expect much more than that. He probably won't play on the special teams and doesn't have a great scoring touch, three points in 23 games.
All in all, Rivet is a serviceable third line defenseman that will most likely retire at the end of the season.
