Game Recap 28: Ode We Will Bury Ourselves

"God, you took a lot from me / I don't ask for much, just a sense of security / and all I ever wanted was a minute of your time"
"Ode We Will Bury Ourselves" by Moving Mountains

I never thought that one of my favorite songs would so aptly sum up the crap-fest that was the last three minutes of this hockey game. I sat in the press box as the Blue Jackets got ready for a faceoff in their own zone. They were holding a 3-1 lead. They had outplayed the Predators for 58+ minutes. Pekka Rinne was on the bench for the extra skater. All we ever wanted was a minute of time.

The Jackets couldn't give it to us. It what can only be described as a massive choke job, the Jackets lost in overtime after holding a 3-1 lead with just two minutes left. As coach Scott Arniel said afterward, the Jackets "[pissed] away two points." Basically, yeah.

But, it wouldn't be right if we didn't relive every excruciating detail.

Star-divide

1st Period

Overall, it was a pretty non-descript period. We didn't hit a media timeout until the 13:10 mark. Along the way, the Jackets managed some chances while largely keeping the Predators in check. And then a weird thing happen. They came back from the timeout, lined up for a faceoff in the Nashville zone, and then stood around for a bit.

It turns out there was a play under review. Earler on, the top line of Vinny Prospal, Jeff Carter, and Rick Nash had generated some great chances. Turns out one of them was really great, as the Toronto officials were reviewing it. A Prospal pass to Carter in the slot resulted in a shot by #7. Upon further review, the shot hit the back crossbar of the goal and bounced out so quickly that no one had seen it go in. After the review, it was ruled a good goal. The Jackets had gotten on the board first.

1-0 Jackets: Jeff Carter (4th) at 12:42, from Vinny Prospal and Rick Nash - EV

Columbus forechecked pretty hard for most of the period, including a tussle that resulted in Derek Dorsett beating the ever-loving piss out of Francis Bouillon at the 16:04 mark. The Jackets had a scare late when the puck and David Legwand found their way into Curtis Sanford's crease, and after what seemed like an eternity a huge scrum built up and Columbus got the freeze whistle.

The Jackets went to the dressing room without giving up the dreaded "last minute goal" for a change. They outshot the Preds 10-4 in the period. It was a physical period with the teams racking up 25 combined hits (13 for the Jackets).

End of 1st Period: 1-0 Blue Jackets

2nd Period

The Predators, as you would expect, came out buzzing in the second. Columbus got caught flat footed a few times early, and nearly gave up a couple of goals. At the 6:25 mark Martin Erat got a good look and fired a quick shot, but Sanford was there to make a slick kick save.

Columbus weathered that early storm, and had a couple of nice chances of their own. At the 7:41 mark, the puck came out to Grant Clitsome at the left point, and he unleashed a bomb. Pekka Rinne was up to the task, and snagged it with his glove.

Finally, Columbus would be rewarded after some good work down low. Derick Brassard tied up a man on the right post as Jared Boll took the puck behind the net. He turned and fired a shot from the half-boards, and Rinne kicked out a rebound. Antoine Vermette was there to crash, and elevated the puck over Rinne's pad to make it 2-0 Jackets.

2-0 Jackets: Antoine Vermette (4th) at 10:49, from Jared Boll and Nikita Nikitin - EV

Columbus had a two goal lead, but of course it wouldn't last. After an icing call with 7:11 left, Scott Arniel elected to use his timeout. It didn't help. The Predators won the draw, and after a brief cycle Columbus tried to clear but failed. Bouillon sent a shot in from the point that Sanford stopped, but Sergei Kostitsyn was able to tip the rebound wide where an unchecked Mike Fisher bolted in and roofed it over Sanford as he tried to cover.

2-1 Jackets: Mike Fisher (6th) at 13:10, from Sergei Kostitsyn and Francis Bouillon - EV

The teams traded chances the rest of the way, and Columbus managed to head to the second intermission with a 2-1 lead for the third straight game. After two they were outshooting the Predators 18-11.

End of 2nd Period: 2-1 Blue Jackets

3rd Period

The question was whether or not Columbus would make it a different outcome than the previous two. Early on, it looked like they wanted it. Within the first 90 seconds, they would push the lead back to two. James Wisniewski would sent an outlet pass to Marc Methot, who feathered a gorgeous head-man pass to Dorsett. Dorse skated in alone on Rinne, and snapped of a wicked shot that beat the Preds' netminder high-glove.

3-1 Jackets: Derek Dorsett (6th) at 1:24, from Marc Methot and James Wisniewski - EV

Around the 6:00 mark, I worried out loud in the game thread that the Jackets might be content to go into a shell and play "dump and chase" for the last 14:00 or so. And while there was some of that, they didn't stop sending guys into the zone with the two goal lead. The extra breathing room afforded by Dorsett allowed them to continue pushing.

Brassard looked (not surprisingly) fresh throughout, and the entire second line was a handful for the Predators all night. In addition to Vermette's goal, they had several other good shifts and solid chances. What that means for Saturday for Brassard, well that's anyone's guess.

But, as we know, it's never over until it's over with this team. You might want to sit down for this part.

With 1:42 to go, Rinne went to the bench. The Predators got a faceoff in Columbus's zone, and brought the extra attacker on. You know how this is going to turn out. The Preds would win that draw back to Ryan Suter, who fed it over to Shea Weber. You never want to let Weber shoot, least of all in this situation. He unleashed the beast, and Patric Hornqvist got two cracks at the rebound, finally stuffing it home past Sanford.

3-2 Jackets: Patric Hornqvist (6th) at 18:24, from Shea Weber and Ryan Suter - EV (extra attacker)

Oh, but they weren't done. No no. After someone basically boarded Hornqvist after the goal (no call), 30 seconds later Samuel Pahlsson got nabbed for a cross-check. Or was it? Pahlsson pleaded total ignorance. Scott Arniel was more direct in his post-game assessment:

"A combination of: we didn't win any draws at the end in our end of the rink, allowed Weber to get that shot away on the first one, [and] a shitty make-up call by the referee that was horrendous on Sammy Pahlsson that's never been in a fight in his life; and he calls that call there."

The coach noted that they had chances to ice the puck on the PK and didn't do it. Boy, howdy. The Jackets managed to make it down to 19.9 seconds left and another key faceoff in their own end. Again, Nashville won the draw. It was quick. Martin Erat sent it to Suter at the point, Suter drifted to the center and sent it back to Erat, who fired a quick shot that was tipped in by Sergei Kostitsyn. Tie game, 12.1 seconds left.

3-3 Tie: Sergei Kostitsyn (4th) at 19:47, from Martin Erat and Ryan Suter - PPG (extra attacker)

Would there be any doubt about how this would turn out?

End of Regulation: 3-3 Tie

Overtime

Overtime is always interesting. As Arniel noted, with so much open ice, "It has to be all visual. You can't throw stuff blind." Except, no one told Antoine Vermette that. He'd played a great game, and was bringing the puck deep on the left side early in the OT. Fedor Tyutin was coming in on the right side, and cut in toward the net thinking Vermette was going there. But Vermette was thinking Tyutin was coming in on the wall, and rimmed the puck all the way around.

The puck got past Tyutin and created a rush for the Predators the other way. Erat took it up the left wing, and crossed it to Colin Wilson, who beat Sanford with the one-timer.

4-3 Predators: Colin Wilson (7th) at 1:45, from Martin Erat - EV

Final Score: 4-3 Predators (OT)

Standard Bearers:

  • Derek Dorsett - Six goals. Third on the team in goals. Derek Dorsett. He made a heck of a play to beat Rinne and provide what should have been enough goals to win. He's having a career year. I'll eat some crow for some of the things I've written about him. Right now, he's one of the Jackets' best players.
  • The 16--50--19 Line - Derick Brassard earned another night in on Saturday, in my opinion. He looked like the player I'd expect when playing with actual offensive-minded guys. I thought this line was the most consistent line on the night for Columbus.

Bottom of the Barrel:

  • The Last Two Minutes - I don't think I can single any one player out. It was horrendous. Was the call on Pahlsson bad? Probably. Do you still have to sack up and play the last 1:06? You bet your ass. It's inexcusable to have lost this game. To keep hearing words like "fragile" and "rattled" after these games in description of the team, and to hear Scott Arniel say several different times some variation of "these are veteran players, they've all been in these situations before, and they need to make the right decisions in these situations," well, I don't have to tell you that it's pretty maddening.
  • Officiating - Sure, I'll pile on. One minor penalty through the first 58+ minutes (a pretty obvious hook on Rick Nash by Francis Bouillon), and then to call THAT penalty on Pahlsson? As I said above, the Jackets still shouldn't have lost this game. But, it was a pretty weak call, at best.

They'd better not sulk for too long. The Bruins are coming on Saturday, and they're as hot as anyone right now.

Just posted this on game thread, but ill post again here since its the recap:
Im just gonna come out and say it. I thought Sanford played pretty well, but..
.818 SV% tonight. If this were Mase in net, a lot of people would be going crazy hoping for a trade.
Just sayin’
As for Arniel, everyone should look at the TOI spread among the players. Horrible.
Heres a preview, Dorsett had over 17 minutes of ice time, a minute of Vermette. And we werent even on the PK for the entire game until a minute left. Pathetic

Can’t put all the fault on the officials for that call. Yeah, it was kinda weak but what the hell is Pahlsson thinking even engaging in that situation? It was a perfectly clean shoulder to shoulder hit by Weber, the puck is still live and it’s a minute left in a one goal game. Play the damn puck, win the game and let Boll or Dorse get “revenge” on Weber the next time they meet. Worst part, that was a hell of a play by Dorsett to get the puck out, as he looks up, sees Weber about to truck him and makes sure the puck gets out before he gets rocked. Then Pahlsson has to go and ruin it.

Arniel also said that the players were talking amongst themselves on the bench after the hook on Nash gave them a PP that they should expect a make-up call. According to the coach, whenever you get a PP in the last 5 minutes (even though the hook on Nash was obvious), you can expect the other team will get one.

I was just honestly surprised it came on that call, and not on Nikitin faceplanting Hornqvist into the boards.

Yeah I kinda thought it was a double make up call, for both the Nash hook and the Nikitin hit. My point still stands though. Pahlsson still unnecessarily put himself in a position for the refs to make that make up call.

by TheCoachCTF on Dec 9, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah dude.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about with the hook on Nash…but:

the Pahlsson call was clearly a makeup call by the refs. And it was a deserved makeup call in my opinion. Too bad for y’all to lose a game that way.

I’m not sure what you mean by you’re not sure what I’m talking about with the hook on Nash. For my part, my comment was originally more a point that coach Arniel said the players on the bench were expecting a make up call. No sour grapes on my part, just FYI.

Literally, I don't remember a call for Nash.

I wasn’t being flippant. You must be referring to the first non-fighting penalty of the game late in the 3rd. Maybe there was a makeup call coming on that one (I didn’t complain, I thought it was a hook), but I doubt it. But the other makeup call was pretty legit in my opinion. I’da been bitchin’ if we’da lost that game cause the refs cost us 30 additional seconds on the PP by not calling the penalty when it happened.

When I said “the hook on Nash” above, I meant “when the Preds player hooked him in the late 3rd period.” Sorry, that was a bit unclear.

And for further clarification...

The coach was saying that, after that call gave the Jackets a PP with 4:08 to go, the players on the bench were all giving each other a heads-up to be disciplined and expect a make-up call to even it out.

Im fine with a makeup call, but to make one with a minute left when a team needs a goal is wrong. If you watch other games in the last minute with a team needing a goal, there are cross checks and slashes and hacks all over the place, but the good refs let those kinds of things go. The GOOD refs know when to let the game play itself out.
Unfortunately, this ref decided that he needed to call a makeup call for no reason, since it was clearly a hook on Nash.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 9, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

The makeup call was not for our penalty on Nash.

It was for the cross-check / board / major / game misconduct penalty that should have been called on Nikitininonin.

Not to be rude, but this is the biggest homer comment ever..
Yes, that should have been a penalty on Nikitin, major/ gamemisconduct/ board, absolutely not. Watch the replay again. It was for sure a cross check, but Horny barely touched the boards.
Also, right as he got hit the puck was going into the net, therefore the goal scratches out the penalty being called.
This is going to be my last comment on this, since i get the feeling im ‘feeding the troll’ so to say, especially looking at some of your history at other comment sections (Japersrink).
Ill always hate/ root against the Preds, but good luck this year.
P.S. I do like Rinne. He is quite good

by cbjfan14 on Dec 9, 2011 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

Is this true?
Also, right as he got hit the puck was going into the net, therefore the goal scratches out the penalty being called.

cause it seems counter-intuitive. Seems like since it was after the goal, the penalty should have counted even more so. An after the whistle penalty like what would occur in a scrum.

Answer/don’t answer, it’s all good.

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Dec 9, 2011 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

How is this counter-intuitive?

Im pretty sure i just said it was right as the puck was going in. Even if it was one second after the puck went in, Nikitin would have no time to stop his motion.
Its as simple as going and watching the replay, man.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 9, 2011 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

There was plenty of time for him to stop that boarding action.

I think you need to watch the replay again. HornQ went face first into the boards, so it was boarding. And Nikotininissippi had a ton of time to pull up. It was that bad dude. Go have another look and pretend the uniforms are reversed.

Am I a Homer? Certainly. But no reason for you to be rude to a visitor, especially considering that I’m clearly not trolling. That is, until you insulted me.

Poof, I’m gone.

I never said you were trollin’, just that i felt like a was feedin a troll. Especially since looking at your recent comments on other sites, such as Japersrink, where you were clearly condescending to the Caps fans, it was clear you have trolled before.
I have no problem looking at it with roles reversed. Thats the way i look at it to begin with considering i dont care that much that you guys won the game last night, since our season has come down to hoping for a great draft pick only 20 games in.
Looking at it as a Preds fan (and having seen the replay at least 5 time), i see a Jackets player come in right after Horny shot the puck, and get cross checked by “Nikotinissippi” or whatever the hell you want to call him, right as the puck is in mid air. I see a clear penalty for CROSS CHECKING (not game misconduct or major of boarding), and a goal that cancels the penalty out.

Not sure if you have ever played hockey, but the NHL is FAST. Nikitin would have no chance to stop his motion considering the puck was just let go. He would have to notice the puck going into the net, and completely pull back. Which simply isnt going to happen at an NHL pace.

Im not sure how i insulted you by questioning your opinion on a play, but its all good. I never said you were trolling if you reread my comment, which is why i continued to respond, so i hope you dont take it that way.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 9, 2011 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

All good.

A couple of weeks ago Weber got fined for boarding (Hansen? Raymond? other?) a Canuck. He had about the same amount of time to pull up that Nikissippi had. That’s what I’m going off of. My understanding is that “time to pull up” has little to do with the punishment of of a board or cross check that sends a guy face first into the boards. It seemed to me that it was a wreckless play (is there supposed to be a W on there? doesn’t look right) that could have resulted in a significant injury. Fortunately it didn’t. And since Nikolopolous isn’t meeting with Shanny, it seems like you’re probably right. Although the league office probably didn’t even watch last night’s game :)

And too bad for y’all. I lived in Columbus for 6 years before moving to Nashville and it just seems like the BJs can’t get out of their own way. Not that signing Wiz for $5+M per year was exactly smart, but it just seems like since Nash you haven’t struck any gold….like say Edmonton apparently has. On the other hand, at least Urban is coming to town, which is all that really matters in Cols :)

The general consensus in Columbus has been “we have been bad, but we havent been bad enough”. In other words, we havent been bad enough to get a top 3 pick. We also havent been able to get any classic ‘Detroit steals’ like they are so famous for, which is frustrating. Johansen should be REAL good, so hopefully he really helps us in the future.
Hopefully we can turn this thing around. Even die hard fans are getting to their breaking point.

And GOOD refs don't need to do makeup calls.

They get it right the first time, especially when they’re looking right at it. I think the ref wanted to “let the boys play” but probably realized that it was such a flagarant hit that he literally couldn’t “not” call something.

Arneil needs to go

Don’t know if it’s the players that tuned Arneil out ( like they did Hitch) but someone needs to go. Either coach or players. It seems to me players didn’t play for Hitch costing us a great coach ( who is thriving in St Louis) and they are not responding to Arneil.

Too much talent to keep having these kinds of collapses

Whether it’s the last few seconds of a first period, or the last minute of a game, we keep letting goals in by just stupid playing, often by veteran players. While I agree that the call on Pahlsson was shitty, the fact remains that the Jackets appeared to take a whole bottle of dumb pills in the last two minutes. We have ALWAYS had problems getting the puck out of our own zone, and I mean FOREVER. No matter who has been coaching, we seem to be easily intimidated in our own zone. There have been times this year, sometimes an entire period or two, where we are aggressive in getting the puck out, but when things get close and anxious, this aspect of our play reverts back to crap.

I do not blame the coach for this, but it does call into question the ability of players like Methot, Vermette, and others to use their brains. I thought we had acutally put a complete game together, but even with only 3 minutes left, friends with me said we would lose. Boy were they right. What a huge disappointment, especially after such a great game in Montreal. Will the REAL Jackets please stand up?

Kudos to Nash, Carter, Tyutin, Prospal, Dorsett and Mackenzie for solid play all night.I find it interesting that Dorsett and Mackenzie have two of the lowest salaries on the team, and they are consistently two of the hardest, most energetic players.

Maybe Brassard can make a go of it with Huselius out…again. I hope so. He has talent for sure. As for Huselius, can’t he just go away? I mean he is ALWAYS injured. He was back not even 2 games. With luck, Columbus can dump him when his contract is up. I have never seen a Blue Jacket with less physical stamina. He can score goals when teammates open a hole for him, but when things get physical, he is the first to run away. A friend from Toronto described watching Huselius…“He looks like he is shopping for groceries, just sort of casually strolling on the ice.”

How can we lose draws to a team that has been the worst at faceoffs, especially near the end of a game? We simply have to do better, and play like we did against Montreal. It’s obvious we have the ability when our heads are on straight.

Ugh

That was kinda hard to watch. I’ve never seen a team come back to tie the game with a 2 goal deficit and the goalie pulled.

Don't Blame the Refs

Yeah, it was a make-up call, but the same thing would have probably happened if they had made the call on the cross-check to Hornqvist. THAT was the impetus for the Mary-Kay, not the hooking call earlier. That one was deserved.
