Game Thread 28: Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets

Game Thread #28: Blue Jackets vs. Predators - Thursday, December 8, 2011

The Blue Jackets open up a five-game home stand tonight against the much-disliked Nashville Predators. Nashville comes in reeling a bit, and struggling to score. Their Power Play is still deadly, but they haven't been generating much 5-on-5 offense.

Columbus, on the other hand, has been struggling to score consistently in all facets of the game, but has been playing much better defense of late. This should be a good matchup, and the Jackets are certainly catching the Preds at the right time.

Some lineup notes for Columbus: Kristian Huselius is, of course, back out tonight after hurting his groin in Montreal. Derick Brassard is back in for a change, and is going to get some time on the second line with Antoine Vermette and Ryan Johansen. Can The Three Centers generate some offense?

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Rick Nash and Jeff Carter split up again at some point tonight. Let them each play their games, and stop trying to force them to make well-intentioned but chance-killing passes to each other just to show everybody that they're willing to pass up shooting the puck at every chance. Go back to shooting it, boys.

Curtis Sanford gets his 11th straight start tonight (5-3-2).

Brassard on the second line... your prediction?
Finally gets a chance to show what he can do; contributes.

Has there been any word as to why Moore has been scratched lately? Seems odd to me. (Although who am I to question the ever-changing Arniel lines?)

Rimer and Davidge: “Blue Jackets deserved a better fate.”

Really now? A team that can’t close it out, doesn’t really show up in the 2nd period, couldn’t capitalize on a late powerplay or empty nets, and takes a stupid response penalty late in the 3rd deserved a better fate? I’m sorry – the team doesn’t deserve anything.

Oh I’ll keep watching and wanting them to win, but wanting and deserving mean nothing. The Jackets need to actually show up and do something about it.

Im just gonna come out and say it. I thought Sanford played pretty well, but..
.818 SV% tonight. If this were Mase in net, a lot of people would be going crazy hoping for a trade.
Just sayin’
As for Arniel, everyone should look at the TOI spread among the players. Horrible.
Heres a preview, Dorsett had over 17 minutes of ice time, a minute of Vermette. And we werent even on the PK for the entire game until a minute left. Pathetic

by cbjfan14 on Dec 8, 2011 10:53 PM EST reply actions

I usually always agree with benching Dorsett

But he’s one of the hot hands right now. Doing pretty much everything he is supposed to and then some. Is Pahlsson playing really well? I keep seeing him out there. Meanwhile, I maintain Wiz is playing like crap (he was a lovely -7 in those road games) and seeing mountains of ice time while Methot and Moore aren’t allowed to contribute. I adore when Wiz is on but he isn’t now.

We outplayed them pretty much all game. You don’t get a team with Rinne and this defense on their heels that often and we did it from the get go – Vermette had a great look early in this game. To collapse like this is just embarrassing. Do we EVER bury that freaking empty netter that I’ve seen so many teams toss in against us?

It was Nashville, so this stung. After the loss-that-shall-not-be-named, this takes the place of that Colorado game in my mind as 2nd.

by Gatjax on Dec 8, 2011 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Im sorry, but i dont give a shit how well Dorsett is playing, he should NOT, in any form what so ever, be playing 17 minutes a game, EVER. Especially when Vermette (who is also hot) had a minute less, and Nash/ Carter only had a minute more. Letestu only had 9 minutes toinght. What the hell did Letestu do to deserve 9 minutes a game? And what has Umberger done to deserve most ice time of any forwards. I dont get it.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 8, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, why did Letestu get put on a Boll/MacKenzie line? Maybe they intended to get him more ice time in PPs which didn’t really happen. Nash/Carter/Prospal should be getting maximized ice time.

by krdonnie213 on Dec 9, 2011 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

And once Sanford puts together three seasons of consistent save percentages under .850, I’ll demand him to be traded, too. That’s the difference. Every goaltender has a couple games a season where they play bad or just get bad bounces, and this was one of them for Sanford.

The problem isn’t when you do that for one game, but when you do that just about EVERY game.

Look at the stats

Last five games:
Preds: .818%
Habs: .900%
Oilers: .848%
Flames: .914%
Canucks: .909%
Average: .878%
5/12 games played. Most teams before the previous five are teams that tend to be low scoring teams to begin with (St Louis, NJD, Buff (tons of injuries at the time), Nash).
Like i said above, im not trying to say that he has been horrible, needs to be traded, etc, just that he hasnt been this amazing goalie every game like people lead to believe because of how bad Mason was.

I concur

But I still agree he has been more than a step above Mason. And with Sanford, you at least know what you’re getting: A backup goalie. That’s all he is at an NHL level. And everyone knew his “beginner’s luck” would run out. It looks like maybe it has. Regardless, the sample size is small enough to where one bad game can bring it down a great deal, and he just happened to have one last night. Outside of his .818, the Oilers game is the only other one that’s blatantly terrible.

The other three are better than what we have been getting. Maybe part of the issue is the fact Sanford hasn’t faced an NHL shot since 2008-2009, was brought on to be the main goaltender for the AHL squad, and now suddenly finds himself starting 11 straight games in the NHL…in other words, I’ll bet he can use a break. For a goalie not accustomed to it, 11 straight games can be taxing.

So I’d say they should toss Mason in, as it was something Arniel said was going to happen soon anyway.

Someone mark this down as the day @Toxichighway actually thinks Mason should start a game. Amazing. : )
