Game 37 Open Thread: Jackets at Stars
While the Stars have lost 3 of their last 5, as a whole they're the complete opposite of the Blue Jackets. They had every reason to be bad this year. Losing Brad Richards to free agency and getting nothing in return had to hurt. But they're doing pretty well for themselves and a lot of credit goes to Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen's stats started to slide his last couple years in Atlanta, but he's rebounded well and has the Stars in contention for the Pacific Division, just one point behind the Sharks.
Will they go up 3-0 in the season series against Columbus?
On the other hand, the Jackets are in the middle of a nightmare season that no one realized could go this low. But Howson has seen enough and made his intentions to make some trades public yesterday. Will this wake up the locker room? Can Mason continue to take steps towards improvement? Or will they sleepwalk through another game and get blasted by the Stars?
The road to respectability is going to be long for Columbus. This season has made that journey even longer. Can it begin tonight?

That Arniel guy is at it again. Jackets starting Prospal-Vermette-Boll
Guess Bolls name got picked out of the hat tonight
Hilarious. I’m starting to run out of angry reactions so now it’s sad laughter.

Egad. #CBJ G Steve Mason is 0-8-0 with a .839 save pct and 4.80 goals-against on the road this season.

So his stats at home have to be pretty good since his save % is .881 and GAA is 3.41
Not sure the exact numbers at home, but they have to be pretty good.
According to the Dispatch Mason “is 2-2-1 with a 1.77 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in his past five starts at Nationwide Arena.”
Plus/minus is a mostly useless stat. He’s on a poor defensive team with significantly below-average goalies and plays a high number of minutes. Of course he’s going to have a very negative value.

Dallas scores just as I get my stream fired up. I am obviously to blame here.

Johansen can’t quite bring a puck back in front and the Jackets just miss out on an open side of the net. Nice play though.

#fail4nailwatch
NYI beat Flames 3-1
Carolina just beat Toronto in overtime 4-3
Habs and TBL tied at 3 with 10 minutes left
Oilers losing 4-2 to Minny
Ducks play Canucks tonight
And CBJ is winning, which is nice.
And the Jackets will still have more games played than the Ducks (next-to-last) so fewer points in more games will continue.

Takes a shot on the inside of his left foot. That is going to hurt. Yikes. Putting no weight on it whatsoever.

I would like to know the stats of Mason when wearing dark pads. I know he won and played well when he wore those green pads for charity, i think he has good numvers when wearing third jersey aside from Phili game, and last game/tonight with new pads he has been good.
Maybe its the dark pads? Hopefully?
If Nash learned to pass it, he would be a great player. And, of course, learned to show up for every game.
O hey look, a Nash goal
He can create more chances like that if he passes it more. Instead of doing a give and go to get around a player, he tries to go right through three
I agree completely. I am all about the passing which he needs to improve on a great deal. Nash is a tough guy to play with and his line generally does better if he doesn’t have the puck as much. It sounds harsh but it’s true. He needs a good playmaker with him because he will never be one.
I am not asking him to become a play maker, just to make the easy pass to the outside more often to create more chances for both himself, and others. Which in most situations is Carter, who i would want to shoot every chance possible.
This instead of trying to do it all by himself, which he doesnt have to do anymore with good linemates.
Why cant Mason just play like this every game?
Well, no goalie can every game, but aside from the natural bad night, every game? Its like hes messin’ with us. “Here i am, i can be good. Look how good i am. You like this? Now im gonna suck for the next five game”
He is not mature enough yet and his head is not where it needs to be. He also has some physical weaknesses like his side to side movement, rebound control, loosing track of the puck behind the net and his high glove side. Above and beyond that he is a great goalie.
So with a few more years of experience and maturity, he should be a great goalie, right? Then why not keep him.
They can keep him as far as I am concerned as long as he stays in Springfield for a minimum of five years. Besides, what could we get in return if we traded him?
I dont think thats true at all. I could see TBL taking the chance on him with their lack of goaltending. Send us Roloson since his deal is about equal in money to Mason and we can get rid of him at end of year. Package Roloson with a pick.
There is always someone that will take a chance on him. The question is, what will we get back? I am not so sure why we would want Roloson?
Jackets doing a fine job to make this much harder on themselves.

Great hustle and defensive effort at the end. Nash really worked hard which was fun to see. MacKenzie looked very good all night and I can’t believe I’m saying this but Mason was actually solid and got his first road game of the year (1-9 now). The first line was also really clicking, let’s hope that continues.
