Game 37 Open Thread: Jackets at Stars

While the Stars have lost 3 of their last 5, as a whole they're the complete opposite of the Blue Jackets. They had every reason to be bad this year. Losing Brad Richards to free agency and getting nothing in return had to hurt. But they're doing pretty well for themselves and a lot of credit goes to Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen's stats started to slide his last couple years in Atlanta, but he's rebounded well and has the Stars in contention for the Pacific Division, just one point behind the Sharks.

Will they go up 3-0 in the season series against Columbus?

On the other hand, the Jackets are in the middle of a nightmare season that no one realized could go this low. But Howson has seen enough and made his intentions to make some trades public yesterday. Will this wake up the locker room? Can Mason continue to take steps towards improvement? Or will they sleepwalk through another game and get blasted by the Stars?

The road to respectability is going to be long for Columbus. This season has made that journey even longer. Can it begin tonight?

Guess Bolls name got picked out of the hat tonight

Hilarious. I’m starting to run out of angry reactions so now it’s sad laughter.

At least we got Mase. 0-8 on the road so far. He is just the best!

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 8:39 PM EST reply actions

Give him credit though. His stats at home are pretty good.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

Last game was pretty decent for him, I will say that. I can only hope it continues.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Egad. #CBJ G Steve Mason is 0-8-0 with a .839 save pct and 4.80 goals-against on the road this season.

—Portzline tweet

So his stats at home have to be pretty good since his save % is .881 and GAA is 3.41
Not sure the exact numbers at home, but they have to be pretty good.

According to the Dispatch Mason “is 2-2-1 with a 1.77 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in his past five starts at Nationwide Arena.”

Great setup by Johansen.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 8:45 PM EST reply actions

Our announcers suck. Couldnt even tell we scored “and that is a goal”

Great pass by the Johan. Not sure it was supposed to be a pass, but whatever. Nice to see Nash score

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 8:45 PM EST reply actions

Great work by Nash/Johansen again. I’m liking this.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 8:47 PM EST reply actions

Plus/minus is a mostly useless stat. He’s on a poor defensive team with significantly below-average goalies and plays a high number of minutes. Of course he’s going to have a very negative value.

Its still alarming. Especially considering Mackenzie still is able to be a plus ever year and almost every game.

It’s still a bad stat, nonetheless…

Dallas scores just as I get my stream fired up. I am obviously to blame here.

Another good shift by the #1 line. Johansen seems to open up a lot of space for Nash.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Johansen can’t quite bring a puck back in front and the Jackets just miss out on an open side of the net. Nice play though.

The Jackets are collapsing way to much in the d-zone. If the Stars utilize their d-men from the point and get some traffic in front of Mason we could be in trouble.

Vermette goal!

Goal

Vermette. Nice simple shot by Moore

Vermette on a rebound from Moore. Great skating and shooting by Moore there.

In a bit of Jackets’ prospect news. Anton Forsberg (not related to Peter as far as I know) will be in goal for Sweden against Slovakia tomorrow in the Junior Worlds. His first game in the tournament. Hopefully a future Jackets goalie.

#fail4nailwatch

NYI beat Flames 3-1
Carolina just beat Toronto in overtime 4-3
Habs and TBL tied at 3 with 10 minutes left
Oilers losing 4-2 to Minny
Ducks play Canucks tonight

And CBJ is winning, which is nice.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 9:43 PM EST reply actions

Jagr won in his return to Pittsburgh. 4-2 Flyers over the Pens.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

And scored while saluting to a fan that was flipping him the bird (awesome). Talbot also scored ENG to ice it. Couldnt have gone better for Flyers

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

And the Jackets will still have more games played than the Ducks (next-to-last) so fewer points in more games will continue.

Nice cycle by the Jackets but no goal. Prospal and Vermette are clicking pretty good tonight.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:06 PM EST reply actions

Good save by Lehtonen but Prospal has to score there on the open netter.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Wish Johansen got a shot on the first PP unit with Nash and Carter. Someday i guess That second unit of JOhan, Brass, Umby just doesnt seem to mesh

Wiz with a “lower body injury” and wont return.

Really? Really? A lower body injury? Was that even necessary? I coulda sworn he got hit in the head.

I would like to know the stats of Mason when wearing dark pads. I know he won and played well when he wore those green pads for charity, i think he has good numvers when wearing third jersey aside from Phili game, and last game/tonight with new pads he has been good.
Maybe its the dark pads? Hopefully?

Johansen screened that shot perfectly – loving that line tonight.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:36 PM EST reply actions

If Nash learned to pass it, he would be a great player. And, of course, learned to show up for every game.

O hey look, a Nash goal

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:36 PM EST reply actions

If he shoots like that in every game I don’t care if he can’t pass.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

He can create more chances like that if he passes it more. Instead of doing a give and go to get around a player, he tries to go right through three

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

I agree completely. I am all about the passing which he needs to improve on a great deal. Nash is a tough guy to play with and his line generally does better if he doesn’t have the puck as much. It sounds harsh but it’s true. He needs a good playmaker with him because he will never be one.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

I am not asking him to become a play maker, just to make the easy pass to the outside more often to create more chances for both himself, and others. Which in most situations is Carter, who i would want to shoot every chance possible.
This instead of trying to do it all by himself, which he doesnt have to do anymore with good linemates.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Now let’s see how we can loose this game late in the third.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:40 PM EST reply actions

Why cant Mason just play like this every game?

Well, no goalie can every game, but aside from the natural bad night, every game? Its like hes messin’ with us. “Here i am, i can be good. Look how good i am. You like this? Now im gonna suck for the next five game”

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:44 PM EST reply actions

Still pressure on him i would think. Hes now gotta worry about his future in the NHL and Columbus.
Not sure

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

He is not mature enough yet and his head is not where it needs to be. He also has some physical weaknesses like his side to side movement, rebound control, loosing track of the puck behind the net and his high glove side. Above and beyond that he is a great goalie.

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

So with a few more years of experience and maturity, he should be a great goalie, right? Then why not keep him.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

They can keep him as far as I am concerned as long as he stays in Springfield for a minimum of five years. Besides, what could we get in return if we traded him?

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think thats true at all. I could see TBL taking the chance on him with their lack of goaltending. Send us Roloson since his deal is about equal in money to Mason and we can get rid of him at end of year. Package Roloson with a pick.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 29, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

There is always someone that will take a chance on him. The question is, what will we get back? I am not so sure why we would want Roloson?

by Ville A on Dec 29, 2011 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Because his deal would end at the end of the year. We would then have flexibility over the summer in goal and in salary as we wouldnt have Mason under contract.

Yes, but he never pl;ayed, Berecki. Its a damn shame too.

Great hustle and defensive effort at the end. Nash really worked hard which was fun to see. MacKenzie looked very good all night and I can’t believe I’m saying this but Mason was actually solid and got his first road game of the year (1-9 now). The first line was also really clicking, let’s hope that continues.

This was the most fun I’ve had all season. Awesome game! Mackenzie is such a great asset on the PK, I can’t stress that enough.
