Game 36 Open Thread: Flames At Jackets

Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets, Dec 27, 2011 7:00 PM EST

Since I'm...ah...temporarily underemployed this week (I start a new gig after the new year, don't worry about me), I ran down to get some video from the pre-game skate and Scott Arniel's press conference. Take a look!

The good news, as coach Arniel said, is that the Flames haven't actually gotten into a full game yet, so hopefuly the Jackets will be able to make that work for them.

The bad news is that the Jackets will have to go back to back, and Steve Mason will be asked to get himself up and "stop the bleeding" given the news that Curtis Sanford is banged up.

The NHL's trade freeze will "thaw" at midnight. A change in Columbus seems inevitable, but what form it may take could be shaped by what happens tonight.

In hopeful jinx news, Jarome Iginla is a hat trick away from 500 career NHL goals. Yeah.

The weather is getting ugly out there. Be safe!

Looks like I’m the only one here tonight. Nice fight be Dorse along the boards early.

STILL BELIEVE COLUMBUS

I’m liking Mase’s new pads. I always like the dark/colored pads better than white. Anyone know why Sandman isn’t in net for the back-to-back?

Sanford is still banged up from what I heard. Hip and back issues. Although he hasn’t been that good as of late, I just hate seeing Mason in there. It seems like every shot is a potenital goal.

I hope the trade line is going to produce more excitement than this game. Has anyone here heard any recent rumors of potenital deals?

I tried to watch the game. I’m at the Columbus airport and neither airport would put the game on.

It’s probably against FAA regulations to have passengers witness such mediocrity.

After 2, the Jackets are up 1-0 thanks to Brass. Gut check time.

The Jackets are the worst in the NHL going into the third with a lead so let’s see what happens.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well go figure, the Flames just scored.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 8:59 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, so, the gut check has somewhat failed. Iginla left alone in the slot punches goal #598 through Mason and we’re tied at 1, but I must admit not actually losing yet.

I can’t wait for the trade deadline. Oh wait, Howson will probably do nothing at all.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:00 PM EST reply actions

Maybe Brassards trade value went up a bit tonight. I’m searching for positives here. What else?

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:03 PM EST reply actions

The defensive effort has actually looked pretty solid tonight. A lot of blocked shots and active sticks.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:14 PM EST reply actions

It’s hard to be happy about at least getting 1 point, but it’s a step in the right direction.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:29 PM EST reply actions

Well, we have a point, anyhow.

Really, defense has not been a problem tonight, but it would be nice to beat Kipper in OT rather than going to a Shootout.

Both teams with some opportunities, but Kipper and Mason are both looking like NHL goalies tonight.

Mason nearly muffed the luck with 3 seconds left in OT. Gaah. Fortunately he finally flopped on it.

I was sure the Flames would score on that one.

Actually an entertaining overtime. I have to say though that Nash’s shooting doesn’t look as fast or acurate as it used to. I don’t mean to bash the captain, but I just don’t see him making very many good plays these days. I wonder if he is still untouchable or if he might be traded. As I say this he will probably score in the shootout…

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:39 PM EST reply actions

Iginla made Mase look like a rookie there.

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:41 PM EST reply actions

Another loss. What can you say at this point? Does anyone even care anymore?

by Ville A on Dec 27, 2011 9:44 PM EST reply actions

Considering you were talking to yourself the entire game, I’d say no.

by Toxichighway on Dec 27, 2011 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

no

Don’t care about the loss. At least it was pretty entertaining tonight

by cbjfan14 on Dec 27, 2011 10:16 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Bit the score sheet says almost 17k showed up to the game. That’s amazing to me.

by Gr8fulnfa on Dec 27, 2011 10:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yea, very good crowd. Its still winter break for a lot of people. These games usually bring a lot of fans.

by cbjfan14 on Dec 27, 2011 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

I care but can’t pay attention as much when I’m on breaks. Upstate NY is not so good at covering hockey outside of NYC and Buffalo, so I miss CBJ stuff when I’m out of Ohio.

CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
