Game 32 Open Thread: Lightning At Jackets

Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets, Dec 17, 2011 7:00 PM EST

Time for a little game action.

If you missed the updates, Dane Byers and Aaron Johnson will be out, so Ryan Johansen will draw in on the second line, while Mark Letestu is expected to play on the fourth line but keep rolling with PP units. Derek Dorsett will be reunited with Umby and Pahlsson - here's hoping that line clicks once again, as the Jackets can use all the secondary scoring they can get.

Steve Mason will make his second start of the home stand, and hopes to give the Jackets a chance to pull 5 points from the 5 game set. Not the result anyone wanted, but I suspect he'll be satisfied with a victory in his second start this month. The Jackets will be off for a brief Central Division road trip through the end of next week, then back for a visit from Calgary, a trip to Dallas, and finishing the month with the New Year's Eve game vs. Washington.

I wouldn't be shocked if Dorsett and Steve Downie get to know each other tonight - particularly if Dorsett gets assignments against the Stamkos line.

Enjoy the pre-game ceremonies to honor Vinny Prospal, and let's hope the team gives him a nice holiday gift with a big effort on home ice.

Go Jackets!

After 1 period the Jackets have looked uninspiring and are losing 2-0. Mason gave up a goal in one of the first 3 shots. Shots are 11-5 in favor of the Jackets, but they’re hardly getting good shots in. Sounds familiar in the worst sort of way.

The worst part is that I think we outplayed them for the majority of that period.

by ahowie on Dec 17, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

This is classic Jacket’s hockey. Outplaying but not soutscoring their opponent, and Mase is also back to vintage form. 2 goals on 5 shots – why is he still in the NHL? Also, Clitsome making 2 defensive mistakes on both goals. I am not at all impressed with his play this year. Not a good skater, can’t pass to save his life, and his positioning is suspect. Furthermore, I know this sounds like a cliche, but offensively we seem to lack the killer instinct. Shooting when we should be passing and vice versa, hesitating too long etc.

Sorry to sound so negative but it’s just getting harder and harder to watch this. I hope that Craig Patrick have some good ideas.

Complete defensive chaos!

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:25 PM EST reply actions

I know it was a defensive breakdown, but Mason is not having a good night, as is typical for him when giving up an early goal. 3 goals on only 9 shots against right now. Gross.

Yes, it’s obviously deflating to the rest of the team. Not an excuse but still.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe if we keep playing this badly there will actually be some changes made. Or maybe not. It looks like this team just realized they will not make the playoffs anyway so why bother.

Another wrap around – what are the odds?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Garon is old/doesn’t move very well left and right (something that was true even last year, as we got to see) so I’m not overly shocked that the Jackets score when they get him in motion.

Good analysis. Mason is also bad when the puck is behind the net, but more because he seems to loose track of it.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

Just as I wrote that Mase totally lost track of the puck but got lucky that they didn’t score. We have to get rid of this guy now.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Do they know something about Garon that I don’t?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Mase is really flopping around out there tonight – not a good sign.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Certainly doesn’t seem like he’s seeing the puck very well through traffic right now. He’s overreacting and flopping back in response instead of staying in a positionally sound spot.

Will we actually score 3 goals tonight?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:39 PM EST reply actions

It wouldn’t shock me. Tampa, despite their oft-hyped 1-3-1 system, is poor defensively and Garon/Roloson are both looking fairly old this year in net.

Yes, Tampa looks pretty bad defensively. If you get it past their neutral zone “trap” they are in trouble. It looks like they don’t defend very well against the cycle either.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Nice puck movement on the PP.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:40 PM EST reply actions

I almost can’t believe we didn’t score on that PP, but then again of course not.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Not a bad period out of the Jackets. Seemed to pick up the play a bit more and got on the scoreboard thanks to quick plays and good work ethic. I’d take more of those for the rest of the year.

Yes, we made some better offensive plays with speed, although Nash’s and Vermette’s blind passes to noone drives me nuts. However, I can’t believe we actually “won” that period, because it felt like Tampa could have scored 2 or 3 more. Not to beat a dead horse, but I felt like they would score on Mason every time they got within 40 feet of the goal. And the D is back to playing in panic mode because they have no faith in him. Anyway, that’s what is looks like to me.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Stamkos is back to looking dangerous. He is not just looking for the one-timer, he creates a lot for his teammates too. If Ovi could learn to do that the Caps would be a whole lot better than they are.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 8:51 PM EST reply actions

That sort of adaptation is much of why I think Crosby, Toews, and Stamkos have left Ovechkin in the dust for “best player in the NHL” status. The first three players all seem to find new ways to improve in their full game, be it through passing, goal scoring or faceoffs. Ovechkin must learn to grow/change if he’s going to become a top player again.

Agreed. you could say some of those things about Nash too. If he could learn to get his teammates more involved he would be a true superstar.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Oh absolutely. I had hoped one of him or Carter would pick up on their playmaking skills but they don’t seem to quite mesh still. They both look “alright” but I have to wonder if they’d perform better with two pure playmakers on different lines? (Not as if the Arniel lines ever stay constant/sensible.)

by zekebud on Dec 17, 2011 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I would love to see them split up. Problem is that we don’t have enough playmakers without Juice to set them up. The only one is Johansen and he needs a bit more seasoning to be really good. Do you think Nash’s drop in production the last couple years may have something to do with Huselius’ injuries?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Your absolutely right. And i actually think he has started changing his game since the arrival of Hunter. He has been getting many more chances as of late, now he just needs to get his finish back. Hopefully he returns to being the top player in the game, the NHL needs his exciting play.
As good as Crosby, Toews, Stamkos are, there is a great argument for Datsyuk. Silky mits. Love that dude

We have been outscored 40-22 this year in the 3rd period. What are the odds we will win this one?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:05 PM EST reply actions

Tampa not exactly so great defensively either with 34 goals against in the 3rd (although with 29 goals for) both in the same number of games played.

Good point, I guess we have an outside chance at a comeback as long as we keep Tampa from shooting at Mason too much.

I have always thought that Umby plays so much better on a gritty third line than on the top 2. Same tonight.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:17 PM EST reply actions

Probably because he is not forced to complete a pass. Don’t get me wrong, Umby is great but not true top six talent.

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

He’s a very good 3rd line player/reasonable 2nd line player, I think. Consistent 20+ goal scorers with grit and spirit aren’t so easy to come across after all.

You are exactly right. On a good club he is a third liner, that can fill in higher up if he has too. And yes, he does know how to score which we sorely need.

Bergeron nearly puts one past Garon for an own-goal but the goalie manages to hold it out. That would have been pretty cool/hilarious to see go in.

Is that the sound of Arniel’s pink slip?

by Ville A on Dec 17, 2011 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

No. It’s already been discussed ad nauseum that firing Arniel at this point in the season would be pointless. Why not wait till the offseason? That’s the sound of time running out tonight.
