Game 30 Open Thread: Jackets vs. Canucks

Vancouver Canucks at Columbus Blue Jackets, Dec 13, 2011 7:00 PM EST

Let's not sugar coat this, the Jackets have their work cut out for them tonight. The Canucks are hot, very hot, right now, winning nine of their last ten games. Columbus will need to make the most of every powerplay, and will need to avoid taking penalties themselves.

The biggest story for tonight's game remains Steve Mason- the team's franchise goaltender will make his first start in almost a month. How the team in front of him responds to him being back in the cage remains to be seen, but Mason has had a lot of time to work with goaltending coach Ian Clark. There's no denying the fact that Mason will need to be strong tonight against the Canucks.

Look for Dane Byers to come out banging bodies tonight, looking to make an impact after being called up from Springfield yesterday.

Apparently I'm the only one with faith in the kid...

but I really do think he will pitch a shutout tonight. Think about it, Mason has always played best of a break, and has always played amazing when somebody is breathing down his neck. It’s like the perfect storm of awesomasoness (see what I tried to do there, yeah, it failed)

Also, the fact that this game probably decides his NHL future should help

by barga on Dec 13, 2011 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

He should be, the way he plays defense (and offense!)

lol, just answered by the announcers as a yes. Not sure if that’s an improvement over paulsons current play or not

How good would our first line be if Carter and Nash could actually complete a pass?

by Ville A on Dec 13, 2011 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Okay Carter just had a great pass for Nash – but Nash has to score on that.

I like this whole “Rick Nash on the PK” thing.

Yes, good PK but Nash’s stats on the PK have been pretty bad in the past, although he sometimes nets a shorthanded goal. Really surprised we didn’t give up a late period goal though.

by Ville A on Dec 13, 2011 7:44 PM EST reply actions

On that subject, I wonder if Arniel is trying to get Nash going defensively by putting him on the PK? He is like -15 for the year and Howson called him out the other day saying he needs to be a better 2-way player which is true.

The sad thing is, you can substitute any name for Nasher's in that sentence...

Considering how abysmal the Jackets’ PK has been this season, I think anything different would be better here. I mean, it seriously can’t get much worse.

I think it was a signal that we were gonna be aggressive, probably wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t in the final three minutes of a period. Since we always let down at the end of periods, why not put in aggressive players just to see what happens

Johansen with what looked like a “slow” backcheck and he passes the Vancouver player to get the puck back. Much like other taller players, his skating style is very deceiving – much faster than it looks like he should be thanks to those long strides.

Yes, but it’s not just the skating style. He will have to improve his stamina next year as he often looks more tired than other players at the end of a shift. But he is only 19 so he is forgiven – will be a great player.

Question. Tied at 1:00. Do the CBJ pull the goalie and go for the win?

Or be content with OT?

Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."

by YankeeCarp on Dec 13, 2011 9:22 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see why pulling a goalie would be an option unless Vancouver scores. The game can still be won with 5 skaters.

I was looking at the standings...

…and the CBJ are 12 points behind Nashville. Need to start making up ground. Pulling the goalie in a tie game is a pretty radical move…

I was just wondering how agile he’ll be if it goes to a SO.

by PrezNewton44 on Dec 13, 2011 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Why not put Sanford in for a SO? I always thought that should be an option if one goalie has a better record in the SO.

by Ville A on Dec 13, 2011 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

The argument has always been that the replacement goalie is cold.

But I say go with the better record. There’s plenty of time to warm up during the lineup setting phase…

Normally when Mason plays i would say pull him – no matter how much time is left, but seriously no they won’t.

by Ville A on Dec 13, 2011 9:24 PM EST reply actions

Going to OT. Canucks did control play for various stretches, but the Jackets certainly battled all night.

Certainly a tiny positive (I know we're beyond the days of a "moral victory.")

I don’t know what Vancouver’s SO record is (if we get that far) but I don’t think they are as good as some other teams. Probably because Henrik and Daniel are not allowed to pass the puck.

1-1 in the shoot-out. Columbus is 2-3.

Nice!!

I’m from Alabama, and was a Thrashers fan up until this year. Since I need a new team, and will be moving to Toledo, OH in the near future, I’ve kind of gravitated to the Blue Jackets. This site has helped me learn a lot about the team. Good win tonight.
