Game 30 Open Thread: Jackets vs. Canucks
Vancouver Canucks at Columbus Blue Jackets, Dec 13, 2011 7:00 PM EST
Let's not sugar coat this, the Jackets have their work cut out for them tonight. The Canucks are hot, very hot, right now, winning nine of their last ten games. Columbus will need to make the most of every powerplay, and will need to avoid taking penalties themselves.
The biggest story for tonight's game remains Steve Mason- the team's franchise goaltender will make his first start in almost a month. How the team in front of him responds to him being back in the cage remains to be seen, but Mason has had a lot of time to work with goaltending coach Ian Clark. There's no denying the fact that Mason will need to be strong tonight against the Canucks.
Look for Dane Byers to come out banging bodies tonight, looking to make an impact after being called up from Springfield yesterday.

60% odds that he has a sub-par game, 20% odds on crying.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

Apparently I'm the only one with faith in the kid...
but I really do think he will pitch a shutout tonight. Think about it, Mason has always played best of a break, and has always played amazing when somebody is breathing down his neck. It’s like the perfect storm of awesomasoness (see what I tried to do there, yeah, it failed)
Also, the fact that this game probably decides his NHL future should help
I like this whole “Rick Nash on the PK” thing.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
Yes, good PK but Nash’s stats on the PK have been pretty bad in the past, although he sometimes nets a shorthanded goal. Really surprised we didn’t give up a late period goal though.
On that subject, I wonder if Arniel is trying to get Nash going defensively by putting him on the PK? He is like -15 for the year and Howson called him out the other day saying he needs to be a better 2-way player which is true.
The sad thing is, you can substitute any name for Nasher's in that sentence...
(With the possible exception of Dorsett)
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Considering how abysmal the Jackets’ PK has been this season, I think anything different would be better here. I mean, it seriously can’t get much worse.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
I think it was a signal that we were gonna be aggressive, probably wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t in the final three minutes of a period. Since we always let down at the end of periods, why not put in aggressive players just to see what happens
What could it possibly hurt?
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
The ref seems to be calling a lot of penalties tonight. That could hurt the Jackets. The Sedins are too good on the powerplay usually.
Yes, that makes me nervous...can't cut Vancouver any slack...

And as we were saying...sigh
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Good save by Mason, then nice time-wasting by Nash and the d-men on this PK. I like it.

Canucks have been pressing very hard their past few shifts. Shots 7-1 for Vancouver in the period.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

You knew they were going to turn it up. Jackets need to act instead of react.

Shot bounced off the top corner of the goal piping and away. Was that close to being a tie game.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

I’m really not sure how the Canucks didn’t connect there. And I’m also not sure if that’s actually because of any Jacket players. That was pretty congested down low.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

WOW Nikitin made a save before a Canuck (may have been Kesler) could have a clear shot on an empty net.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

In the Jackets case, they need luck to make up the skill gap.
However it works, I’ll take it…

About every shift down the ice the Jackets seem like they dodge a bullet

Exactly. And the longer this remains 1-0 the more it favors the Canucks...

A replay shows Rick Nash got cross-checked by Bieksa in one of those chances down and around Luongo. I can see why he was pretty steamed at the refs at one point there.

Johansen with what looked like a “slow” backcheck and he passes the Vancouver player to get the puck back. Much like other taller players, his skating style is very deceiving – much faster than it looks like he should be thanks to those long strides.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

Really not liking this frantic pace...
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
While it may not be conducive to a Jackets win, I’m really enjoying this game. I find that this kind of pace is a lot of fun to watch.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.
Sometimes I tweet things
I waffle back and forth. It's much more fun to watch a team other than the CBJ.
I LOVE wide open hockey. Not a fan of Jacques Lemaire’s style. Or Hitch for that matter. The trap is quite boring.
But I get nervous when the Jackets engage in this type of back and forth as I feel we don’t have the horses for it…
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Tremendous pick up by Howson. I like Nikitin's style.

It's been a rather solid effort tonight. I'd feel better if we had about 5 more goals, though...

Looks like he might have spun and twisted something. Looks to be a groin injury. May or may not have been cause by a Canuck (probably not).

Per Portzline on Twitter:
Looks like a left groin pull for Mason. Right pad swung out wildly after Jannik Hansen and John Moore came into net, did the hyper-splits.

With Philly he was historically a pretty impressive two-way forward (had some more depth than just that rocket wrist shot). Maybe it’s about time?

The way he rolled around was frightening
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Probably got a stick up under the pads OR just cramping. a stick under the pads doesn’t seem like it would hurt that bad, but trust me, it does
Perhaps a cramp then? Must say, after all that time off that much movement couldn’t have been such a pleasant shock to his body.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

Which is not to say “just” a cramp – the the amount of flexing and moving he has to do in net, a serious cramp would be absolute hell and would explain the pain.

I don't know but he's certainly showing his teammates some resolve and grit.

Question. Tied at 1:00. Do the CBJ pull the goalie and go for the win?
Or be content with OT?
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
I don’t see why pulling a goalie would be an option unless Vancouver scores. The game can still be won with 5 skaters.
CCT, CBJ, SU, NYM, Bills Fan. It can be depressing.

I was looking at the standings...
…and the CBJ are 12 points behind Nashville. Need to start making up ground. Pulling the goalie in a tie game is a pretty radical move…
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
I was just wondering how agile he’ll be if it goes to a SO.
by PrezNewton44 on Dec 13, 2011 9:24 PM EST up reply actions
Why not put Sanford in for a SO? I always thought that should be an option if one goalie has a better record in the SO.
The argument has always been that the replacement goalie is cold.
But I say go with the better record. There’s plenty of time to warm up during the lineup setting phase…
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Going to OT. Canucks did control play for various stretches, but the Jackets certainly battled all night.

Certainly a tiny positive (I know we're beyond the days of a "moral victory.")
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
I don’t know what Vancouver’s SO record is (if we get that far) but I don’t think they are as good as some other teams. Probably because Henrik and Daniel are not allowed to pass the puck.
