Falcons Game 25: Sixty Minute Men

This game wasn't that different from many others that the Springfield Falcons have played over the last six weeks. A key component was a full 60 minute effort. Another factor was that finally the breaks went the Falcons way, while the opponent's goalie was not the second coming of Terry Sawchuk.

This all led to the Falcons dominating the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and earning a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at The Nest.

The Falcons netted the first goal of the game, something that hasn't happened often of late. The goal came on the power play and although it appeared Tomas Kubalik tipped in the shot from Brent Regner, the goal was credited to Matt Calvert.

Just 1:19 later, Martin St. Pierre and Alexandre Giroux broke through the neutral zone on a 2 on 1. St. Pierre, doing what he does best, held off until the last possible minute, passing across to Giroux who fired the one timer from his off wing over the shoulder of Bridgeport goalie Anders Nilsson.

The Falcons stayed out of the penalty box in the period, while the Sound Tigers served just two minors. The Falcons outshot Bridgeport 9-7 in the period.

The second stanza started and finished with David Savard.

Savvy picked up his first goal of the season with a blue line blast at the 1:14 mark, assisted by Cody Bass and Dane Byers. Then, with Aaron Ness serving a holding minor, Savard moved in from the point, took a pass from Alex Giroux and buried his second of the period at the 19:58 mark.

Manny Legace was outstanding in the Falcons goal in the period, holding the Sound Tigers scoreless in the period and ensuring the Falcons maintained a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period was all Falcons, all the time. Cam Atkinson scored his 12th of the season, his 8th on the power play which is tied for the AHL lead in PPG. Martin St. Pierre feigned a shot from the right point, instead passing to Atkinson at the left hash mark. Cam blasted the one timer past Nilsson to give the Falcons a commanding 5-1 lead. Alex Giroux picked up the other helper on the goal.

The Falcons took three high sticking minors in the final period. One to Atkinson, one to Adam Mair and Dalton Prout all got the lumber up in the action. Final shots on goal were 30-30.

Today's Three Stars:
1. David Savard
2. Alexandre Giroux
3. Martin St. Pierre

The Falcons return to action for a rare Tuesday home game when the Worcester Sharks come to The Nest. A special start time for the game will be 6PM.
