Atkinson Recalled

It was just yesterday that Jeff Little pointed out at Ten Minute Misconduct that the Jackets were operating with space for an extra forward, yet had not called anyone up.

This morning, it appears that issue has been resolved. After flying to watch the Falcons on Friday evening, Scott Howson announced on Twitter that the team has called up right winger Cam Atkinson, who originally started the season in Columbus with 4 GP and his first NHL goal vs. Vancouver, before being returned to Springfield. In 10 games with the Falcons he posted 4G, 2A, and 4 PIMs.

Why now? While debates about the state of the locker room will continue (after all, one of the reasons he was sent down was to prevent him from picking up too much negative attitude), it's clear that Atkinson brings something the club has clearly lacked: Finishing ability. With his scoring touch, even if he did show some difficulties with giving up opposing scoring chances, it seems like Atkinson could an attempt to spark a team that is clearly generating opportunities, but cannot find a way to bring them home.

Atkinson will meet the team in Philadelphia for the morning skate, so it seems likely that he will be in the lineup against the Flyers tonight. Who comes out to make room will be an interesting question.
